Of course I went the long way to meet my friends from the Motorcycle Tours Forum for lunch at Farm Boys BBQ in Chapin, SC. I decide to head east to Darlington, SC to grab the latest tag from the Midlands Tag-A-Roma that I have been participating in with a group of riders from Adventure Rider group. The morning air had a little chill to it that kept me wide awake. The hour and half ride to Darlington were uneventful and I found the tag right were I thought I would. Now the hard part is getting you photo up on the Adventure Rider sight before any of the other riders do. I do not have a fancy phone that would allow me to upload it from there so I had to race to the closest ... read more

09-24-10 I left the house as the sun was coming up over the lake in my back yard. The seat to my new V-Strom was still damp with the morning due and I was excited. Less than twelve hours earlier I had Big Boy Motorcycles installed new Shinko 705 dual purpose tires on the bike and was anxious to get them scuffed in. I headed toward the cost on Hwy. 378 to once again pull my bike into Jeff’s Garage for some serious wrenching done by myself and friends. The three hour ride too Myrtle Beach, SC was uneventful and a little boring. It had been a while since I had ridden without my XM radio or my GPS and my helmet was unusually quite. The ride to the beach was easy and you would think ... read more

The Glacier Lakes Motorcycle Club and the AMA sponsored the 2010 Titanic Grand Tour and it was one of the most fun things I have ever done on a motorcycle or should I say motorcycles. I started the tour riding my 2007 Honda Shadow Spirit VT750DC and after a really bad wreck in North Carolina I ended the tour on a 2007 Suzuki V-Strom DL650. The tour started on April 15, 2010 with 173 riders hopeful riders. The goal I set for my first ever tour was to finish in the top forth of the pack. I had quite an ambitious goal. One of the first things I did was sit down at the at the kitchen table with maps of South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. Next I grabbed up my two son, Harper and ... read more

08-20-10 Weeks of fighting with my insurance company and searching the south for a good replacement bike were finally coming to an end. Early Friday morning my wife and I loaded up in my F-150 and headed to Anderson, SC to look at a really good looking Suzuki V-Strom (DL 650) that I located on Craig’s List. The three hour drive seemed to last forever, but was worth it when I pulled up and saw my new bike sitting in the stranger’s driveway. I looked at my wife and just smiled. After introducing ourselves to the bike owner’s wife, husband was out of town; I asked for the keys and jumped on the DL. I was only gone for a few minutes and I was headed back to the owner’s home. The bike road like a ... read more

07-23-10 It was time for an upgrade. I left for my three day adventure a little after 10 in the morning and headed down 378 to meet my buddy Jim in Myrtle Beach, SC to change out my aging problematic Garmin Street Pilot III for a newer 2610 model. It was a nice ride that I made in just less than three hours. I called Jim when I was about thirty minutes out so he could head on over to Jeff’s Garage, the unofficial motorcycle hang out in the area. He met me with a warm BBQ sandwich from Little Pigs BBQ. Jeff was not home but he left the garage open and we had the GPS wired and changed out in less than an hour. Once the bike was put back together we headed to ... read more

07-03-10 Friday night I went to check out the Shadow and install the new Mix-it 2 that replaced the old one that caused all the problems that plagued the trip to Hilton Head several weeks ago. The people at Cycle Gadgets were great and sent me a new one under warranty. Once I got it all hooked up I had no power to the XM Radio or my auxiliary lights. I checked all the switches and all the connections and everything looked to be in order. I finally pulled off the seat and started checking all the wires. Finally I started checking fuses and found a 20 amp fuse that was blown. I installed the fuse and everything worked fine. I put the seat back on and took the Shadow for a quick test ride and ... read more

06-11-10 I burned a vacation day at work so I could head out for a two day adventure down the coast of South Carolina and over into Georgia. I headed out a little after eight in the morning for a small town I had noticed on my GPS but did not show up on any of my paper maps. I had noticed it on a quick trip over to St. Matthews just a few weeks earlier. The town was Singleton and was located just a few miles down the road from Fort Motte on Hwy. 601. I tried several small roads hoping to get me to this little town, but none of them ever took me to the correct location. On the third try I turned down a little dirt road just past some railroad tracks ... read more

May 15, 2010 One thing I have noticed since I started the Titanic Grand Tour is the changes in the country side. On my first ride all the farmers were hard at work plowing their fields. Now just a little over a month later the corn is knee high and the fields look like an ocean of green. After gassing up at Bunky’s in Eastover I headed out towards US-178 searching for the small town of Wolfton, SC which was just an hour away. From there it was a quick little 10 minute ride to get a photo of Orangeburg. I stopped for a quick breakfast at Subway before heading out to get a great photo of my bike, the rally flag and the welcome sign to Bamberg, SC. After Bamberg I took a 35 minute ... read more

05-02-10 Several weeks ago I got an email from David Bjork saying that he and a friend were riding down from the Chicago area and wanted to start a 5000 mile certified Iron Butt ride from the Columbia, SC area. They needed an Iron Butt member or a police officer to certify the start of their ride. Luckily for them I am both, so I agreed to meet them in Columbia at the Lizards Thicket on Elmwood Ave. This morning I left Eastover and I drove into Columbia to meet them at 8 a.m. The food was good but the fellowship was better. I enjoyed the hour I spent with David and Bob. They advised me that the ride they planned was going to take them to Jacksonville, Fl today and then in the morning they ... read more

04-24-10 Continuation of . When I walked out of the kitchen door into the wet morning I was not sure how the trip was going to go. But I have been promising my thirteen year old son, Harper, for weeks to take him with me on one of my adventures. I knew when I saw my son with his mothers riding jacket on and a helmet in his hand that this was a trip I had to make. First stop was just five miles up the road at Bunky’s Market to top off the tanks and to cash a check for some gas money along the way. I topped off the tanks, wrote the check for $20 over and left. Ten miles down the road I remembered that I did not get my cash, so I ... read more
