Gunbunbu Waterhole to Timber Creek Awake at first light, knowing we had another 45kms of the Humbert Track to go, not relishing the thought of more dust etc. After backtracking and connecting with the main track we were on our way. All too soon it became apparent that it was not going to be a fast trip. Faced the first of many steep dry creek crossings, having to manouvere both vehicle and car across rockshelves and up and down sandy river beds that were not meant to be driven on. Must say driver, car and trailer all handled very well. At each crossing we stopped the car and walked across working out the best route to take and marking same with small rocks, this paid off and the Toyota amazed us with the way it handled ... read more

Well what an interesting day, a day of diversions and some interesting driving. Left DW and the crowds to retrace our tracks for 36kms then taking a right hand turn off the bitumen onto the Buchanan Hwy. First leg is 180kms from Dunmara to Top Springs. Bob had read a bit about this pub but when we arrived decided to keep going and having had enough of the dust took the bitumen north to Victoria Hwy,. We had already pulled off the road earlier in the morning to allow three road trains to pass, leaving us choking in red dust. However, after about 5kms curiosity got the better of us and we did a U turn back to face another 240kms of “dirt”. Are we mad! The road would take us in the back way to ... read more

Day 8 – Daly Waters Today was a travel day finishing up at the iconic “Daly Waters” pub for the night. My how things have changed in the 27 years since we were last here. There must have been 150 or more assorted campers, caravans, motor homes all camped here for the night. We booked in for the Barra and Beef dinner which was accompanied by free entertainment. Dave Chilcott better known as “Chilli”. Put on a great picture show accompanied by his guitar, songs and stories all based on 63 years of working as a “jack of all trades” in outback Australia. An absolute must if you happen to be up his way. Good old fashioned entertainment and a very uniquely Australian theme.... read more

Day 7 approx. 505 kms travelled Left Alice as light rain was falling, our expected stop for tonight is a free camp site called “The Pebbles” just past Tennant Creek. The road is fantastic and we averaged 105km/hr. The rain has stopped and we finally saw blue skies and sunshine by the time we got to the Devils Marbles. The temperature is finally rising. After filling up with fuel and stocking the freezer from the local butcher, we arrived at the Pebbles as darkness falls. Already a few other travellers pulled in for the night. Its warm but cloudy again so no “stary stary nights”, here’s hoping for a nice sunrise.... read more

Hi folks For those who are following our blog, just want to let you know you will possible not hear from us for the next few days due to the service or lack thereof provided by Telstra. Any of you who have listened to radio ads about the team of dog groomers Telstra sent up the Stuart highway to prove they could continue to run their businesses, don't believe it there are hundreds and hundreds of Klms with Zero service. Today we will head north from our bush camp at " The Pebbles" just north of Tennant Creek towards Daly Waters. Daly Waters is 36 km past our intended right turn but we a told is a must see so will decide later today. We will then take a left turn onto the "Buchanan Hwy" , ... read more

Exhausting but terrific day. Left before dawn (6am) from “Gday Mate” park hoping to get to PV early just in case the cloud cover clears to get some good photos. If you travel early in the morning you need to look out for horses as we saw many very close to the road, we were told they like the warmth in the bitumen. At the turn off to PV the sign warns 22 kms of “severe 4WDriving”, well the first 18 kms was a breeze, however the last 4 kms from the camping area you are actually driving in and across the dry, rocky Finke River bed with a series of “jump ups” and “downs”, Bob was in his element. On arriving at PV we are the first there and decide to do the 5 km ... read more

Spent the morning at the Desert Park which is a bit like our Healesville Sanctauary but focuses on the different flora and fauna of the desert. It is in a great setting, we arrived in time for the birds of prey talk and as we sat in a small ampitheatre you could look up at this amazing backdrop of red cliffs. The park has a great nocturnal exhibit and some great ideas if you are wanting to create a dry native garden. Also areas featuring wildflowers. After having a walk around town and checking out some galleries, Bob went off to the Australian Transport Museum and the Kenworth Hall of Fame. I went back to park to catch up on some domestic duties and read a book.... read more

Bordertown to Pimba Roadhouse Day 2 749 Ks today. Lots of rain and I have the worst head cold so slept most of way thru Adelaide Hills and lower Flinders Ranges. Even the Bee Gees played loud could not keep me awake. Stop off in Port August for some supplies. Free camping tonight at Pimba, in bed by 7.30, intermittent sleep, trains and trucks passing in the night. Befriended by a lovely Blue Heeler at Pimba who stayed for tea, found out next morning he belongs to a local who collects the rubbish. Guess a dog knows a soft touch when he sees it. Everything is looking very green. Pimba to Cadney Park Roadhouse via Coober Pedy Day 3540Ks today. Weather improving, headcold not. Intended to stay at CP but been there before and did not ... read more
