Travelling with Locky Locky and I left Broome in a large Toyota four by four, loaded up with 24 cans of Emu Export lager and food for the camping trip ahead. I mention the beer because it’s the beer of choice for the Aboriginals in this part of the world; it's cheap and cheerful but the white folk don’t touch it, either because of the taste or the negative association. But we were drinking it! Not only that but once we got onto the thin two lane road we were a-cruising and when you’re a-cruising that’s with absolutely nothing on the road or in the landscape - you crack open the beers. Driving in the outback And those beers helped because it's a harsh, monotonous place out there as Robert Hughes the Aussie art critic suggested ... read more

On the road: me looking at you

Old Man Take a Look at My Life To continue my journey north up to Broom, I could have tried to catch a lift from Coral Bay, but I didn’t fancy my chances, so instead I did the lazy thing and hopped on the Easyriders tour bus; It's benefits meant I wasn't waiting around, I was with fellow backpackers and I got to see the remote Karijini National Park in the Pilbara Desert - 600,000 square kilometres large! I also knew that there was approximately a 50 percent chance that the group would be great or rubbish. So, how’d the gamble go? Meet the Easyriderz crew Twats is a bit harsh it was just a shit assortment of people - eleven in all. I found myself to be the oldest person there; and when you have ... read more

Leaving Perth I’d had enough of Perths shitty weather and the cost of everything so I looked into going northwards - where the prices would be the same but at least it would start warming up. The problem I had however was transport - they were not ideal: I didn’t drive; so I couldn’t rent a car or even a camper van - very popular among backpackers here. There was no train line up the west coast of Australia - only up the "Centre", for example Adelaide to Alive Springs which cost 350 Aussie Dollars (175 quid), and that was for a seat only on a journey that took 19 hours! The Greyhound bus north was more expensive at around $400 (200 quid) from Perth to Broome - and at 2,454 Kilometres! The only real option ... read more

So I’ve arrived in the country they call Australia - a name derived from the ancient Greek cartographer, Ptolemy (AD 90 - c. 168) who called this part of the world Terra Australis or “Southern Land”. It's also called the "Lucky Country", a phrase used ironically by its original author as an indictment of 1960s Australia but subsequently used as a term of endearment ever since. I’m sure there are some of you who have been waiting in eager anticipation for this one…you know who you are. As for other people reading this, in particular the anonymous - I'm not travelling to Australia to confirm your nationalisms about a land that you universally call "awesome', I aim to be opinionated and truthful with my impressions of what I see and experience. If you disagree with my ... read more

Hi I'm currently in the land of Oz, and internet availability has been expensive, non existent and very slow. I've not had time to blog (some people will have sighed I'm sure). Anyway, here's my sojourn to Singapore.... Hospitality and making your own luck I arrived in Singapore secure in the knowledge that I had a place to stay with a friend. This just goes to show that being nice people not only makes you feel good but also has very occasional tangible benefits. Whilst staying at the Earthwalker hostel in Siem Reap we met Stefanie who was travelling alone; AJ and I invited her to come dine with us a few nights in a row and as a result of that kindness we received an invitation to Singapore to come stay with her. Despite Singapore ... read more

What I'm reading: V.S. Naipaul, Among The Believers: An Islamic Journey ...where was I?...I left off the last blog crashing cross the Celebes Sea on a thin piece of boat, gripping tight to the side of, thinking will I survive? I made a quick glance back and the little brown man was standing upright holding the engine motor arm - totally in control. He looked as if he had done this trip thousands of times already, a boring commuter journey for him. I had to walk to the ATM machine in town to pay the man, I told him I'd be back. I then got to the dusty town and a fifteen minute walk to the ATM where I had to withdraw the money for the boatman. As I stepped out of the booth, a man ... read more

Goodbye to "Mr Fantastic!" AJ and I arrived back in KK, and a day later we left each other. His two month sojourn in South East Asia had come to an end and he had to get back to Hanoi to catch his return flight to ye olde Europa. It was the end of something special...a good travel companion, if not maybe my best friend, definitely someone I can trust and rely on. Oh, and laughter, lots of biting acerbic wit and laughter. Ha! "This is fantastic!" As I left the hostel at 5.30 in the morning for my bus to Semporna he even got out of bed (his second fave place) and gave me a farewell hug. It was akin to me putting listening to his pregnant baby - the bloody giant Dutchman. Bus journey ... read more

Reflections on time spent away So, 9th July, and I’ve been travelling five months exactly; what can I say about this milestone other than I’ve definitely grown into it? Checking in to a new room, packing, unpacking, repacking has developed into a natural rhythm. Seeing new things, meeting strangers, making friends of strangers, shy aloofness has turned into open friendliness and the heat I’m utterly used to now. I could do this travel out of bag lark for a long time I think and I’m thinking of other travel destinations already - Africa, India, more of Burma perhaps? I never thought I’d think it (seems too bleedin’ obvious for a start) but the 9-5 job, house, Fridays evenings down the pub - there is an alternative to that. Don’t worry - I have no desire to ... read more

So, I’m currently in Kota Kunabari (KK) in Malaysia - it’s in the state of Sabah on the northern part of the island of Borneo. Yes, I’m in Borneo, I don’t know why the name has the aura of the romantic, of the exotic and tropical - but it does. Anyway, I’m in the Step In hostel in “KK” catching up on some blog time before the big trip tomorrow, the climb up Mount Kalinabaru - the highest mountain (4000 metres) between the Himalayas and New Guinea. We’re incredibly lucky to be doing it at all as accommodation up there is booked up months in advance. Let’s just say that AJ and myself are determined folk and know what we want. So I’m leaving Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) today to catch a flight from Singapore to Kot Kinabalu in Malaysian Borneo. I thought I’d take the chance to write up my experience of Malaysia whilst on the bus to Singapore for the flight over. Penang Whilst at Bangkok I persuaded AJ that we should go to Penang, a UNESCO World Heritage site, famed for its historical and diverse architecture as well as its unique ethnic makeup. The train journey down to Penang would have taken 24 hours so we decided on direct flight with Air Asia from Bangkok. The engine stopped working on the tarmac of course and the lid was opened up. One passenger got up and left the plane and we all wondered as we took off again if we’d live. Immediately upon landing Malaysia was ... read more
