Today we travelled to the Island Fortress of Suomenlinna, which is in the mouth of the main port of Helsinki. It only takes about 15 minutes by ferry to reach the main jetty. It is not only a very popular day destination for tourists, but also for Finns who love to go there for picnics and swimming. Suomenlinna is actually 4 very small rock islands interconnected by small bridges. It is a combination of historical buildings, cafes and resturants, private homes, buildings available for hire for conferences and weddings and a naval acadeny. All of these activities in such a confined area lends the island to a very unique atmosphere. As you travel around the island you can tourists snapping away with their cameras, local inhabitants going about their daily business, school groups on excursions and ... read more

Another early morning and it is really starting to grind on the old CF scale, especially when we could have slept in. Alex decided that 4.30am was a totally acceptable time to get up, however Jo and I did not see eye to eye with him, especially as we had a long day visiting the old city of Tallinn on the cards. By 9am he was still full of beans so we decided the hour walk to the port to catch the ferry was in order. With not far to go we got hit by a fairly large shower of rain with no protection anywhere near us. Unfortunately as it was peak hour the numerous taxis that went past were already full. The kids took it with good hunour at we made it to the ferry ... read more

After nearly 5 weeks in Asia we have arrived in Scandinavia ready for the wedding. Alex is absolutely rapt that people have stopped following him around and pinching his cheeks (the Fins are pretty tall so probably don't see him). Our flight from Dehli to Helsinki was excellent. Because the average male here is 185cm and the average female is 170cm (yes I am the avearge height of a Finnish women) so we had plenty of leg room on the plane. It was a very comfortable flight. A CF of 8 to Finnair and those tall Finnish people. It was about Sunday lunchtime when we landed and most of the people were catching connecting flights to other destinations. As a result there were not many of us who went through immigration and out of the airport. ... read more

This is a special AIRPORT edition of my travel blog, and let me tell you with just 7 weeks until the Commonwealth Games there is a lot of work that still needs to be done. After another 5am start we were not in the best frame of mind as we made our way to the "New" International Airport of India. So when we saw it for the first time as we started to drive in we thought that it was going to be all good as it looked exactly like something you would expect in the 21st Century. How looks can be decieving. As I have learnt, India does not quite have the comcept of efficiency. However the Airport takes inefficiency to a new level. Once you get to you drop-off you make your way to ... read more

After spending a couple of days in Mumbai, adjusting to the harsh realities of India, we have made our way to Dehli for a couple of days before heading to Europe and the wedding in Finland. We had to be up early to get to the airport on time. Due to the traffic being a total nightmare in Mumbai we left 90 minutes defore we had to, even though it was only a 30 - 40 minute drive. It is just as well we did. We were running early and were a bit hungry due to our small and rushed breakfast. We decided to check in first and then get a bite to eat. When we got to the counter designated for our flight, we were told that it had been cancelled and that we were ... read more

After not even 24 hours in Mumbai I have gone past ranking things on the Care Factor (CF) scale and moved straight into the Holy Crap (HC) factor. Before I start rating things during my first 24 hours in India on the HC scale, I will set the scene a little bit. We had to get up very early to leave our Phuket hotel by 7am. We then had a 12 hour stop over in Singapore before heading off at Midnight for Mumbai, landing at 2.45 am local time and getting to our hotel by 4.30am. Technically I had not slept for 26 hours so my view of things may initially have been a little bit skewed. However after walking around today for several hours, my initial feelings have been solidified. Passport Control and immigration gets ... read more

Today is our last real day in Thailand before we fly off to India. However we have been able to get a few last adventures in. For our last day on Koh Phi Phi, Jo and the kids went to a Fish Spa to have all the dead skin nibbled off their feet. They start off by cleaning your feet thoroughly, apparently they don't want the fish to die. Then for the next 20 minutes the fish nibble away. Jo, Alex and Phoebe all said that initially that it felt very wierd and then tickled a fair bit and then they finally got used to it. I can't believe even Alex liked it. When we got there, there was a bunch of local Thai guys watching a Muay Thai match at a bar across from the ... read more

Let me start off by saying that I have a new found respect for my kids. I have always loved them to pieces but it is not until everything really hits the fan that you truely find out what they are made of. As this blog story unfolds you will understand why after our "Snorkelling Trip" I am giving them a CF of 10 for toughing out a really bad and dangerous situation. Our day for our snorkelling trip started off really well, we had a good breakfast and the skies were actually blue. We met a local long-tail boat driver out the front of our hotel and followed him down to the local docks to start our snorkelling trip. With us were a Czech couple and two Dutch girls. We were about ten minutes into ... read more

Finally the monsoonal rain has broken, just in time for our first day on Kho Phi Phi. However the rain gods did have a final parting gift with a storm front on our way from Ao Nang to Koh Phi Phi. Still the trip was actually very smooth, so you can imagine my compassion for a traveller who started to be sea sick as soon as we left the dock. The ferry had not even got past the headlands of Ao Nang and out came some sick bags. Yes I am with you; I would have gone out onto the open deck to hurl, not in the main isle next to the door. So to that particular individual a big CF of 1. When we got to Koh Phi Phi it started to bucket down. Some ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ao Nang July 27th 2010

Let me get this off the bat straight away. I very rarely disagree with the Lonely Planet, but I do have a very different view point about Ao Nang than they do. I think they have been a bit harsh on the town in their publication. To state that it is very touristy and sells alot of cheap holiday trinkets may be true, but where in Thailaind isn't that the case? And I do get their point about McDonalds etc being a major tourist point is a concern, however it does have some nice beaches nearby and the views of the limestone mountains are absolutely breath taking. So me not seeing eye to eye with the Lonely Planet Thailand guide gets a CF of 2. We stayed at the Somkiet Buri Resort and it was absolutely ... read more
