Day 24 We left Bangkok this morning and jumped on a plane headed south to Krabi. We went with a rough idea of where we might end up (either Ao Nang, Krabi Town, or Railay) and thus no accommodations booked but everything we had read assured us that although things are busy as it's high season it's not peak season so we should be able to find something. Our original plan was 2 nights wherever we ended up, then head out to Phi Phi islands for 2 days before finally going to Phuket. Once at Krabi airport, we debated between being centrally located in Krabi Town to make an easy getaway to Phi Phi but the beautiful Railay was calling our names so that's where we headed. It was a short bus ride to Ao Nang ... read more

Day 23 Rahim and I went to a cooking class this morning. The group was nice and small - only 5 people. We were all young too. Despite this though, the class wasn't overly chatty even with Rahim's great efforts to engage people in conversations. It was a full morning and we had been advised to not eat a heavy breakfast as we'd be eating all morning. It was very true and after the second course (of 5) we were quite full already. There was also a trip to the market to buy some of the items we'd be needing but the instructor was not overly informative or passionate so I think we missed something from the total experience. However, we learnt how to make 5 different dishes and were given a recipe book too. So ... read more

Day 22 I spent a lovely morning strolling through Chiang Mai, stopping for some coffee and to just watch the city pass by. I also arranged for a tuk-tuk to the airport on my own. It was then time for lunch and before I knew it, I was off to the airport to head back to Bangkok and meet up with Rahim. It was great to see a familiar face come bounding towards me amongst the sea of strangers at the airport. Rahim was in good spirits, which was great considering his luggage was lost and he was just on a 12-hour flight. So we climbed in a cab and headed to our hostel, Lub*d in the Silom Rd area. We opted for a nicer end hostel that was comparatively priced to low-end hotels. We also ... read more

Day 21 This morning, I was up early to join a tour to Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep (the infamouse temple on the hill) and a local hill tribe village. I booked through Journey Adventures as they seemed to be the cheapest around and they also published a very useful map of Chiang Mai that I picked up at the airport, so they seemed somewhat reputable to me. I was pleasantly surprised that we had an English-speaking guide. I had thought I was just paying for transportation. We first went to a hilltribe village of Hmong. It was totally just geared towards tourists with many booths selling local handiwork. We did learn about how opium is made from poppies though. Our guide advised against attempting to bring any poppies home with us. Schapelle Corby I will not ... read more

Day 20 It was a quick wake-up, good-bye to John, and out the door to meet Lily in the lobby for our shared taxi to the airport. I was thankful to have Lily with me as she could communicate easily with the driver. It seems everyone is trying to scam you in Hanoi. Many people have felt this and Lily has somewhat of an inside look into this by understanding the language. Once back in Bangkok, I chilled out in the airport for a few hours before I was able to check in for my Air Asia flight to Chiang Mai. I opted to bring my big backpack with me instead of leaving it in the left luggage at the airport as my bag was light (huge thanks to Michelle for bringing home a bunch of ... read more

Day 19 The morning started with an early walk to the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum. Niina, Tuomas and I were all eager to see the dead body of Uncle Ho himself. John, Tina, and Lily came along as well. When we first approached we were concerned as there seemed to be a long line. We were told the mausoleum was only open from 7:30am to 10:30am and at 9:15am the line was looking like we’d be there for awhile. However, once we cleared security, the line was moving fast. Too fast actually as Niina and I got separated from John and Tuomas who were held up by security. We did attempt to wait for them but the security guards and white gloves worried us. The boys then got stuck behind some massive school tour groups. Once ... read more

Day 18 We awoke to an overcast sky. I think actually more overcast than yesterday so I guess we lucked out with doing the boat tour yesterday. We then headed back to Hanoi to be reunited safely with our bags. I opted to follow Tuomas on one of his quests to find a great place for lunch, even though I had already eaten at the hotel. Good thing as the place we ended up at (Highway 4 Restaurant) was slightly overpriced for my budget. It did serve crocodile (which I sampled some of Tuomas') and sparrow among some other exotic meats. After lunch we explored parts of the old quarter. The old quarter is a maze of many little streets. 36 of these streets each used to be primarily one market and many are still named ... read more

Day 17 Ugly morning. Arrived at the Hanoi train station at 4am! Despite the early hour, there was plenty happening at the train station. People were arriving from everywhere and being whisked off to their hotels/homes. We made it to the hotel we'll be staying at in Hanoi but only to drop off our large bags and nap in their restaurant as we had to catch an 8:30 bus to Ha Long Bay. After chilling out for a bit, some of us ventured into the very busy streets of Hanoi to see some locals doing their morning exercising around the lake. Tuomas navigated us very skilfully there and back in time for our bus. The drive to Ha Long Bay provided plenty of views of rice fields and an opportunity to nap for a short time. ... read more

Day 15 A glorious sleep at my favourite hotel/guest house thus far. Or maybe it was just because so much was happening in Hoi An. Regardless, I felt bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for the upcoming 3-hour ride through Vietnamese mountains to get to Hue (pronounced Whey). Hue is in central Vietnam and was the capital until 1945. Along the way we stopped on the top of the mountains for a stretch, toilets, and pictures. It was freezing up there and slightly misty. See the photos. The weather was still cold when we arrived in Hue so I wore my warmest clothes - a long-sleeved tee shirt and my new thai fisherman pants. Little did I know this wardrobe would need to be repeated for the next two days. We grabbed some lunch and broke off into smaller ... read more
