Today we had a free snorkeling trip to Molokini crater, as part of our rental of the condo. Molokini is a partially sunken volcanic crater off the coast of Maui that has really good visibility for snorkeling and diving. Interesting tidbit found on Wikipedia -- During World War II, the United States Navy used Molokini for target practice because its shape is somewhat similar to a battleship. Now it's designated as a Hawaii State Marine Life and Bird Conservation District. We were originally supposed to go on this trip the previous day, but they somehow canceled it without telling us. After we finally got ahold of them, they booked us with a different tour company for today. When we arrived, they were having trouble with their boat, so they shuttled us over to another boat. It ... read more

Today we wanted to go snorkeling at Black Rock off of Ka'anapali Beach. Sounds easy enough, right? Well, here's where the laid-back natural beauty of Hawaii runs right smack into the reality of big business. The beaches are public beaches, but all of the property between the road and the beach has been bought up by giant resorts. Every so often, you'll see a tiny blue sign that whispers "Public Beach Access", where a sidewalk runs between two monolithic resorts -- your only way of getting to said beach. Sometimes these little signs come with a parking lot that might hold 15 cars (which of course is full.) The resorts all have giant parking lots that you have to have a resort pass to get into. The Road to Hana is a world-famous scenic drive that has over 600 curves and 46 one-lane bridges. Part of it travels along the beautiful coastline, then it delves into a rainforest before reaching the sleepy little town of Hana. Most people start the drive from the main part of the island in the morning, drive to Hana and maybe a little beyond, and then head back the same way they came, all in one day. It can be done... but as we discovered, they are missing the true beauty of east Maui by not spending a couple days there to enjoy it. Since we drove to Hana at night, we were actually experiencing the Road "from" Hana as we bade a sad good-bye to one of the most beautiful towns on the planet and headed ... read more

Today was the first day of our honeymoon that we actually got to relax. Kevin cooked a nice breakfast for us and we spent a leisurely morning gazing out the front window at the ocean. Today we had an appointment at Luana Spa for a couples' massage class called "Lomi for Lovers". Our massage was outside in a thatched-roof hut with open sides that looked out over the ocean. I have no idea why I didn't bring my camera, but the view was amazing. There's just something about getting a massage in the middle of a rainforest, listening to the waves crashing, that's just... well... cool. :-) Each of us got on the massage table separately, and she taught us how to give each other lomilomi massages -- a traditional Hawaiian massage that integrates body, mind, ... read more

We woke to the sound of waves crashing onto the rocks across the street. We groggily opened our eyes, pulled the curtain back, and were able to see what our paradise looked like in the daylight for the first time. Absolutely amazing... The cottage sits on a property across the street from the ocean, and a one-minute walk to Hamoa Beach -- a small, uncrowded crescent of sand formed inside a volcanic crater. Barefoot and in our pajamas, we wandered down a pathway scattered with fallen plumeria flowers and plunged our feet into the warm sand. As the morning sun reflected off the red rock cliffs, I watched Kevin sip his tea and take in the sights of Hawaii for the first time. Tiny sand crabs scuttled here and there, somehow just barely avoiding the white-wash ... read more

Okay, I know it's been several months since the honeymoon, but it's been slow going on the travel blog front. Bear with me! And without further ado... Our honeymoon officially started at two minutes past midnight on Oct 5, 2009. Absolutely exhausted from the wedding, we were asleep in the hotel near the Colorado Springs airport, our dreams filled with crashing waves, sandy beaches and the occasional hula girl (that must have been Kevin's dream?) ... when my cell phone rang. I tore myself out of sleep and stumbled across the room just in time for it to stop. I looked at the call history and saw a 1-800 number. I realized it must have been the airline calling with a flight update... they had probably moved our flight by 6 minutes or something. I went ... read more

Europe » Austria » Salzburg » Salzburg April 28th 2008

Today was our last real day for sightseeing... tomorrow we would head toward Munich and spend the evening packing and getting everything ready to go. But today, we had one last stop to make... Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart. On our way from the car, we passed through the gardens at Mirabell Palace with their colorful, winding flower beds. The garden was used in the filming of the movie "The Sound of Music", and is where the family sang the song "Do-Re-Me". After a short walk through the city, we took the funicular up to the fortress that overlooks the city, Hohensalzburg. It was built by Archbishop Gebhard in 1077, and is the largest of its kind in Europe to have survived completely intact. The view of the cityscape is spectacular from up there. On our ... read more

We left Bavaria today for the last leg of our trip... a tiny town in Austria called Hallstatt. A lake on one side and a mountain on the other, the town is so small, they say you can walk from one end to the other in about 10 minutes. Mom and I tested this theory when she decided that we needed to go back to the parking lot to retrieve something from the car. Angie said she would sit down and have a beer while waiting for us, and we set off in search of the car. She should have known better than to let the two of us go off by ourselves, as neither of us have any navigational skills. The town is built on the side of the mountain, so there's one main road, ... read more

This morning our hostess had to serve us breakfast early because the family was attending a wedding that day, and they needed time to get ready. She explained the tradition of a Bavarian wedding... her husband and all of the other male family members would arrive at the happy couple's house at 4 am and start the festivities of the day by shooting off giant guns. The bride-to-be would then get up, serve her groom breakfast, and then everyone would don their traditional Bavarian clothing for the wedding. The festivities would last until about midnight, making for a very long day. Angie asked her if we could get the family to pose for a picture before they left, so around 9 am, they all assembled for us outside. They were so adorable... our hostess with her ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Schönau am Königsee April 24th 2008

We left Rothenburg reluctantly today... for such a small town, we just didn't have the time we needed to explore it to the fullest. But, we were on to another adventure... staying on a farm in Schönau am Königsee, Bavaria. Gasthaus Steinwandlehen is an absolutely gorgeous bed and breakfast run by the Fegg family... all of the rooms are inside their house on the second floor, but we were staying in a tiny cottage on the property. The views were absolutely amazing, looking down into a valley... with white snow-capped mountains, and lush green grass. We couldn't have asked for a better place. Our hostess was the nicest lady... wish I could remember her name. They served us milk fresh from the cow every morning, which I'm sorry to say kind of creeped me out. I ... read more
