July 5, 2010 Sasha Today we hiked though the jungle to a cave. We woke up for breakfast at 7ish and after an hour long bus ride and an hour long boat ride we arrived at "lunch." Lunch was at a dock where we were able to jump off to go swimming. Then they served us a "typical Thai meal" which consisted of a fried fish about a foot long, rice, sweet and sour soup, chicken bits and vegetables. It was all on a raft made of bamboo and one had to walk carefully around the "dock" as to not fall through. The scenery on the trek was absolutely stunning - but mostly I looked at the ground to make sure I knew what to step, climb over, and avoid so I feel like I ... read more

July 4, 2010 Sasha I'm sitting in bed, mosquito net overhead, in our room that is about 10 feet by 10 feet with a small bathroom and little porch attached. When I shower, to dry off I stand on the porch in my towel looking out at the rain forest. You can hear the cicadas and cricket from my bed as well. A stone pathway and about 5 minutes takes you to the reception/restaurant area which kind of looks like a tree house because all of the furniture is carved wood. The walls of our room and the floor of the reception/restaurant area all have leave prints fossilized which adds a nice touch. We are not foodies normally, but here each meal and drink is served with beautiful flowers decorating the plate/glass. We arrived here ... read more

July 3, 2010 Sasha This morning we woke up at 7, went to the same street stall as dinner last night for breakfast (yogurt and granola and ice coffee) walked around some, and then got picked up at 8:45 for our bike tour! Again, our guide was great! The tour was 5 hours of biking and stopping for him to tell us about the history of everything we were seeing. We went through the back alley streets along the canals past homes made out of wood pillars nailed together. Some people didn't have complete walls to their house, but they had parakeets as pets hanging outside their door. It was election day which was actually perfect for us. About 70% of Thai actually vote (and I think only 25% of Americans vote so that's a ... read more

July 2, 2010   Sasha Right now I'm sitting on this little side terrace on the side of my room looking at this huge green tree with bright red flowers - the kind of red that almost seems aggressive, because even though the flowers are so small, their color makes up for it with intensity. This new hotel (also in Bangkok) is where we're going to meet the group (tonight, in an hour actually) and is on the canal. This should be pretty and calm but the water taxis are actually kind of loud. Sometimes a propaganda boat passes by - tomorrow is election day and all of the candidates are pulling out all they've got.  We woke up super early around 7:30 and only stopped walking an hour ago. We took the ferry to ... read more

July 1, 2010 Sasha: We got in last night around 3:30am and it was monsooning up a storm! (no pun intended) and then by some miracle it stopped when we got here - Khao San road - which we call the international Bourbon Street. It was full tourist party mode in the streets - crazy! It was surreal, I felt like I was walking in a dream and had walked into my photographs and by memory had to find the hostel we stayed at last time two summers ago.    Now we're on a local bus going to the national gallery. Local bus means no less than 15 non-matching colors and interior decorating almost seems to be a competition between buses - and I love it all. It seems like it's going to be raining all day, ... read more

Friday, December 31st Kawabunga DUDE! “Hang ten” off of Playa Maderas. For those of us who don’t have mom’s surfing lingo sophistication, hanging ten is when a surfer can let all ten of his toes hang off the front end of the surfboard. Maderas gave me the best tan of my life, didn’t peal once and I have no tan lines! As we ate dinner on the beach we remembered New Year’s past; last year on the plane leaving the Brazilian Amazon, Chile the year before that, Hawaii, Guatemala, Israel and then Guatemala for as long back as I can remember. In Chile the New Year’s tradition is to wear yellow underwear. In Nicaragua tradition manifested itself in the shape of everyday effigies. Some sported cigars, others baseball hats, sun glasses, and faces with sharpied ... read more

Tuesday December 28th “Si La Patrice es pequena, uno grande La suena.” – Ruban Dario, Poet. If one’s nation is small, one makes it larger though dreams. Tried to rent bikes but after looking for two hours we couldn’t find the store and gave up. Only to find out on the last day it was right across the street from our hotel. But there is never a lack of fun things to do so Sasha, Shaun and some others ended up going fishing into the sunset swimming and seeing dolphins on this BringYourOwnBooze Cruise. Wednesday December 29th Back on the bus for a farm visit, our last group event, we are approached by an ox cart. While walking through the fields we were attacked by a pregnant bull. We had home made tomales and chicha ... read more

According to our guide and Worldflags101.com: The colors of the Nicaraguan flag originate from the flag of the former federation of the United Provinces of Central America. The two blue stripes represent the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea; while white symbolizes peace. A modern interpretation indicates that the color blue symbolizes justice and loyalty; while the color white represents virtue and purity. The coat of arms features an equilateral triangle which represents equality. Inside the triangle are five volcanoes, which represent the five members of the federation. The triangle also contains symbols of liberty and peace - represented by a red Phrygian cap, white rays and rainbow. The blue-white-blue pattern of the Nicaraguan flag is common to all of the Central American countries. It is a reminder of the United Provinces of Central America. Each of ... read more

A la Puchical = "Wow" in Nicaraguan Slang (although I never heard anyone say it…or many I just didn’t understand) Friday December 24th Off to Ometepe – an island formed out of the lava flowing between 2 volcanoes, Maderas 1394 meteres and Conception 1610 meters. Located in the middle of Lake Nicaragua, home to the world’s only freshwater sharks which we happily avoided encountering. Legend says the island formation derives from a women who with her forbidden lover slit wrists and died in each others arms, when she fell backward in the water her breasts rose up and formed the two volcanic peaks. In keeping with the Christmas spirit we each bought individual gifts for kids of the orphanage CICRIN: Centro Infantil Cristiano Nicaraguense which provides a safe home and “unconditional love” for the mistreated, ... read more

“A cada chanelo le llega su sabado” Everyone eventually gets what (s)he deserves – every pig gets his/er Saturday? We awake to a knock on the door announcing our departure in minutes for Juan Venado (John Deer) Reserve. Shaun found this last minute one hour earlier change in plans “absolutely unacceptable” and choose to go back to sleep – while we took a boat into the heart of the mangroves – Red, White & Black (depending if the roots grow down or up). Birds abounded and jumping fish like skipping stones – we stopped at a beautiful beach. At Las Pinitas we scoured for conch shells, coral, sand dollars, crabs & ate oysters pried off the rocks. Then we went and turned our back to the beautiful beaches of Las Pinatas and our group in ... read more
