Sunday July 3, 2011 Every Kilometer is a Fight I got an early start this morning. I don’t want to be anyone’s surprise. I am on by bike by 8:30 and as I round the front corner of the church I see that someone has already arrived and a second person is pulling in the parking lot. I am waiting for the first town to stop and eat something. With no gas in the tank (food in the stomach) it is slow going. 10 km’s riding gets me into Cremona. I stop for a quick breakfast at their little public park and am off. Water Valley is another 10 km’s. With Water Valley came back all the trees. No more Bad Lands. Leaving Water Valley it is all gravel roads. In my first 10 minutes of ... read more

Friday July 1, 2011 A Hard Day I only rode 65 km’s today but it was demanding. I had to ride out of the valley twice today with my full load. Once to get up to Horsethief Canyon Viewpoint then back into the valley to take the Bleriot Ferry across Red Deer River and then back out of the valley again to be on my way. My first climb out of the canyon was tough, didn’t think I could go all the way up, but I did and it pretty much killed me. Problem now is that I am on the North Dinosaur Trail and now I have to go back into the valley, take the ferry across and then another climb to get out of the valley to hook up with the South Dinosaur Trail ... read more

The Badlands and the Hoodoos While it was my intention to take things a little easier today I still ended up riding about 80 km’s including climbing 2 steep hills out of the valley. That being said most of my stuff was at camp so my load was light. I started the day heading east along the Hoodoo Trail to check out the Hoodoos which were quite cool. I would have thought the Hoodoos would have covered a much greater area, but whatever. They are a very unique formation; it makes it almost difficult to still realize that you are in Canada as these formations look like they are right out of the Grand Canyon or perhaps Mars. Because my goal to see the Hoodoos was accomplished in such quick time I decided to head back ... read more

Tuesday June 28, 2011 Calgary In My Dust Bike was packed and left the hostel at 10:30. It took a little over 2 hour’s just get beyond the city limits and Calgary airport. Calgary has some real nice biking trails along the Bow River, but beyond those biking trails it is a lot of work for a biker to get out of Calgary. I had to make a detour to get some groceries and lunch and stumbled upon the area of Calgary that I had wandered/explored when I was here back in early April waiting for CGG VERITAS to fly me back to P.E.I. Once outside city limits I jumped on Hwy #2. I was told cyclist were aloud on the #2 outside city limits. That being said #2 was still a 3-4 lane Hwy with ... read more

The City Of Calgary Hamilton could learn a lot from a city like Calgary. I have spent the last two days wandering some of the streets of the down town area and I would have to say this is a nice city for those who enjoy cities. Typically I do not fall in that category but I sure am happy about being stuck here instead of Hamilton. I have spent the last two days researching and purchasing a bike for the next leg of my journey. I typically wouldn’t recommend this kind of purchase in such short of time, but I feel I have made good use of time and I feel a sense of success. I spent two days with a local bike shop and they have hooked me to my satisfaction. I think I ... read more

Thunder Bay to Calgary is a long time to be stuck on a bus. I seem to have slept fairly soundly Friday evening. I woke up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The bus stop is at the airport so there is little to do during the lay over other then watch movies on the laptop. In Winnipeg upon boarding the bus you are required to go through a security search. They scan you and check your carry-on bag. I won’t rant for too long, but security puts me into a quiet rage. The sick part is I was watching Band of Brothers on the laptop during my lay over. Watching men die for our freedom. Now we must go through security to get on a bus. Oh how we have handed our freedom away. I wonder what Greyhound ... read more

Don’t Try This At Home Kids / A Change In Plans Imagine 2:00 am in the morning in a strange city. (Insert scary music now.) The streets are deserted. But are they? Are you being watched? You are trying to hide in the shadows to escape detection. But can you know for sure that no one is watching? You slip into a small clump of forest in an industrial area along some train tracks. Did anyone see you slip in? Do homeless people live here? Do dangerous people come here to drink and party? Who is in the shadows? And what was that noise? These are all the many thoughts that raced through my mind as I tried to set up my tent. Talk about a head trip! I am racing to try to get this ... read more

A few disclaimers off the top #1 For some reason this blog “requires” that I put a location with each post. The problem is they (the blog people) have very few locations to pick from. Point is if the location does not make sense you know why. #2 Somehow I screwed up my subscription list and most of you did not get the first two blogs. Follow these simple instructions to view them. Click on "Bloggers" at the top of the page. Then click on "S" and then click on "Sa". Then scroll until you find me "Safari Arie". Use this method to look into the archives at any time. Sorry for this. Tuesday June 21, 2011 A Good Night’s Sleep & Lucky Breaks All Around I think it goes without saying that as a hitchhiker ... read more

Ok, perhaps a little dramatic for being dropped off by (uncle) Red John at the 401/Hwy 6 (Guelph). But I had to start with something on my first day. Today was my first day as a hitchhiker. As I got closer and closer to the 401/Hwy 6 I really had to come to grips with the travel plans that I just told all the people in my world about. I was about to get dropped off with no turning back. I must be nuts. I did a bit of walking, a fair bit of standing, at least it felt like a lot of standing. Everyone who picked me up felt I was making good time. It was a hot day and I will forever remember carrying 100lbs of backpack up the hill in Durham in the ... read more

Even though Algonquin Park is not part of my extended walking journey it must be included. For no matter how far north or how far west I get on my Walk About journey my trip to Algonquin will easily be my summer highlight. It is not so much the destination (Algonquin Park), as it is about the company. My trip to Algonquin is being spent with the most important person in my life; my friend Steven. I picked Steven up Friday morning; it had been 15 of the longest months since I had seen Steven. Steven was very excited, as I was. It was like we had never been apart. We made our usual stop at the Bass Pro Shop. Steven loves the Bass Pro. I asked him what part he liked the best; his response ... read more
