Geo: -12.0931, -77.0465After a 20 hour travelling day, we arrived into the hustle and bustle of Lima. Our first impressions of this city were grimy, polluted and chaotic - one that we hope to dispel with our meandering tomorrow. Our taxi driver took my pigeon Spanish for fluency and fired a tirade of dialogue at me at the speed of an AK47. Dumbly, I shook my head and then continued to stare out at the industrial landscape as we jerked and bounced our way through the bumper to bumper traffic of the choked streets. Eventually, we found ourselves out of the gridlock and careering down wide highways, flanked by industrial ports as far as the eye could see, commercial boats moored up in regimented order along the docks and further out to sea. Soon, we turned ... read more

Geo: 31.6334, -7.9996We enjoyed our final breakfast in Marrakech by vowing to a) eat no more bread. Ever. And b) detox for a year to allow our insulin levels to return to somewhere in the normal range. Every breakfast we have had has been laden with sugar - sweet bread, jam, croissants, pains au chocoats, pancakes, cake, sweet orange juice and fruit yoghurt - a combination of any of these have been the mainstay of our breakfasts, while sugary mint tea has been our welcome drink in every hotel and attraction we've visited. All incredibly delicious but our digestive systems now need a good dose of protein and some simple sugar-free food!We had another mini celebration as we crammed our bags for the final time, managing to cleverly pack our belongings into contortions that resembled Russian ... read more

Geo: 32.0322, -6.81564The peace and quiet at breakfast was a lovely start to a day which would take us out of the madness of Marrakech and back into rural Morocco. We left the riad and wandered through the streets, which were just beginning to come alive - traders were setting up their stalls, wonderful aromas filled the air as early morning breakfasts were served up - flatbreads sizzled, beef sausages and kebabs seared on open grills and orange juice was squeezed into tall glasses. Our night porter guided us to the main taxi point, where we would meet our transport to the Ouzoud Cascades, an impressive series of waterfalls around 170km outside of the city. While we were waiting, we watched the shopkeeper opposite setting up for the day. After pulling out a counter and several sacks ... read more

Geo: 31.6342, -7.99994We were up early for one final breakfast with the group, before squeezing our things into our backpack (more inappropriate celebrations at zipping up the bag first time...) and then we left the quiet of The hotel for the bustling new city streets. Our destination was the serene Jardin Majorelle, a meticulously planned twelve-acre garden designed by, and housing the former studio of, French painter, Jacques Majorelle. After Majorelle, Yves Saint Laurent owned the beautiful jardin. As we arrived to queue up, there was a fracas between two taxi drivers, several other drivers were also involved, and there was loud shouting and barging, adding to the frenetic atmosphere of the traffic honking and the the squealing of brakes. It was with a sigh of relief that we left the whirlwind of noise of the ... read more

Geo: 31.6334, -7.9996Waking feeling a little delicate to say the least, we eased ourselves cautiously out of bed and attempted to squeeze all of our purchases into our backpacks. I've achieved some things in my time that might allow me to be proud of them. However, I don't think I've been as vocal about any of my achievements as I was when I managed to zip up my backpack containing 2 extra long woven scarves, a huge ceramic serving plate, a pill box and two ceramic bowls, plus all of the luggage I came with. I whooped and cheered like someone who had reached the a South Pole unaided, on a unicycle. By this point, we were seriously considering buying a suitcase to use as carry on baggage, but we had managed to squeeze everything into ... read more

Geo: 31.5093, -9.76345Despite what promised to be a sleepless night, the stone walls and high ceilings of the riad bouncing every footstep, word and whisper directly into our room, we slept surprisingly well, and even missed the sunrise call to prayer. Our breakfast was a delight of pastries and hot coffee, served in the traditional dining room, bright textiles adorning every surface - cushions, wall hangings, carpets and curtains all in the distinctive rainbow of vibrant, almost neon, colours. It certainly woke up the two bleary eyed travellers, and set us up for our walking tour in the beautiful city of Essaouira. We stepped out onto the quiet streets, the weather much cooler and greyer than we had been used to for the rest of the trip. Wrapped up against the cold, we met our guide, ... read more

Geo: 31.5093, -9.76345I woke this morning to the strangled retching of Stacey hurling into the toilet. It seems that the tagine we are last night had not agreed with her, and she was feeling decidedly rotten. She managed to make it back to bed, where we both lay and tried to sleep. However, nature outside our window had a different idea indeed. Small birds, whose morning call sounded like squeaking shopping trolley wheels sang repeatedly, rousing us from our rest. The peacocks belonging to the riad called out to one another, their mating calls jarring with the bird calls, creating a cacophony of sound. We made our way to the breakfast terrace and were met with relative tranquility and a continental feast - croissants, pain au chocolate, baguettes and preserves were laid out on Moroccan ceramics. Stacey ... read more

Geo: 30.48, -8.88During a fitful nights sleep (the beds were titled on the sand, giving you a perpetual feeling of rolling out of bed, while the pillows appeared to have been constructed from excess sand from the floor, packed tightly into a pillowcase), we took a trip to the outhouse of the camp. The moon illuminated our path, the millions of stars above creating a diamond drenched ceiling above us. We woke again before dawn ready to witness the sunrise in the desert, eager to see and photograph how it would change the faces of the dunes. Grateful for the relative cool of the morning, we mustered our strength and scaled the high dune, settling down on the cool sand to enjoy the sunrise. From where we were sitting, we could make out narrow, twisting tracks in ... read more

Geo: 31.7917, -7.09262Refreshingly, there was no audible call to prayer this morning and so we slept through sunrise and instead woke up at the more sociable hour of 7.15 ready for a birthday breakfast. Yes, today was my 34th birthday and was set to be a pretty incredible one! Breakfast was served in the opulent dining room with attentive service. I opened my cards while guzzling fresh orange juice and light, fluffy pancakes - so far, so good. Then it was a fond farewell to civilisation as we packed our things into a small overnight bag ready for what we anticipated would be the highlight of the trip - our sojourn into the heart of the Sahara desert. Our journey would take us through new landscapes and small villages, bringing us into contact with with locals ... read more

Geo: 30.33, -5.86"Holy Hell I look like Shrek!" was my response on waking with the jarring Call to Prayer and stumbling into the bathroom. My eyelids had swollen to twice their normal size - I had woken several times during the night, coughing and sneezing, but assumed that this was the remnants of the cold that had been plaguing me for the entire trip. It would now appear that there had been some form of allergen in the room - animal hair would be my first culprit, followed closely by feathers - both guaranteed to leave me looking like David Guest after 8 rounds with Tyson. I prised my eyes open long enough to stagger out of the door and appreciate the sun rising majestically over Ait Ben Haddou from our terrace before heading to the ... read more
