I'm a college student with a major travel bug. And my adventures are just beginning!! This summer I'm going to Greece for a week and then Turkey for two and a half months to do some work there. How exciting! So this is for all of my friends and family to see what's going on because they can't be with me on this incredible journey. I love you all, see you in the fall 😊, the adventure begins!

Middle East » Turkey » Central Anatolia » Ankara June 9th 2009

Alright so I arrived in Turkey last Thursday. It was quite an experience walking into the airport in Istanbul, talk about a meeting of two cultures. There were Turkish women wearing tank-tops and Turkish women walking around in Burqas (spelling?). What a contrast. I finally made it into Ankara and waltzed into the embassy around 5 oclock. Everyone was pretty shocked that I had the resourcefullness to figure my way out there, because apparently my supervisors were supposed to arrange things for me. They didn't. Oh well. I made it to the apartment and met with the other interns who are all really really nice. The apartment that we're staying in is wonderful because it's big with all of the appliances that I'm used to (aka washer and dryer which Becca's apartment in Turkey definitely did ... read more

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Santorini June 9th 2009

Ok so it's been a while since I've written...I'm sorry!! So I guess I'll start with Santorini even though that was a week ago. Becca and I took a 9 hour ferry ride to Santorini which arrived at 2 in the morning. I was sooooo happy to get out of Athens, it's just too dirty. We didn't realize that the boat had docked almost until it was leaving, as they didn't make any announcement, so we were running frantically around the ship, otherwise it would have taken us to Rhodes. The people from the hostel picked us up and they were soooo nice. It really wasn't even a hostel that we stayed at, but a bed and breakfast which only cost 13.5 euros a night!! The island is definitely directed at tourists, as everything seems to ... read more

Europe » Greece May 28th 2009

So today was another fun filled day. I'm pretty happy because I've kept more occupied than I thought I would. I'm starting to run out of things to do though, so next week will be interesting. We leave for Santorini tomorrow, and I've decided that instead of heading back on the ferry with Becca, I'm going to move on to Crete for a day or so. I've heard it's very authentic with people living in the old ways, I'm really searching for some element of traditional Greek lifestyle here. I feel that the country is having a personality crisis. After discussing with some of the other people here, we came to the conclusion that whereas places like France and Italy have been able to integrate their history with modernity, Greece seems to be having some trouble. ... read more

Europe » Greece May 26th 2009

Today was exhausting, but wonderful. I guess it's not really today, as I've been traveling for the past two days..... I arrived in Greece this morning, slightly shell-shocked by the fact that I'm actually here. What an adventure! On the flight I was surrounded by honeymooners all going to the islands, and made friends with a couple of them. It was actually quite hysterical, because on our flight, the Americans were mainly seated in the back and the Greeks in the front. Where we were all quietly reading our books or gazing blankly off into space, the Greeks were having a festival. Laughing, talking, clapping, it reminded of me of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," which is wonderful!! They were all so happy, the entire 4 first rows of the plane were just having a ball, ... read more
