Today was a bus day. We left Granada at 8:00AM with a quick stop at the top of the mountain to take some pictures below. We didn’t get to see much of Granada, but I don’t think we missed much, just your typical European city. As the bus headed east, the scenery alternated between mountains and farmlands. Occasionally we could see the Mediterranean, and the seaside houses and apartments that went with beachside living. We passed the city of Benidorm, sometimes called the Miami of Spain, a seaside town with skyscrapers in the skyline. We passed the earth houses, where houses had been cut into the side of the mountain and only the façade was visible. We stopped a couple of times, once for coffee and once for lunch. We played Trip Trivia, where we were ... read more

Today we bid a sad adios to the Costa Del Sol. Our beach resort day, and the relaxed start this morning gave us time to recharge our batteries and we were ready to hit the road! My cold is going away, and I should be fine in another day or so. Jody’s problems are probably more allergy related, Europe is old and there’s all kinds of new stuff to be allergic to. We left this morning for Alfarnatejo, a small village in the mountains of about 400 people. This is not a tourist town, there are no souvenir shops. It’s just and actual farming town where people make their living from growing olives and making olive oil. There is also a little wheat farming, and they are experimenting with pistachio and almond trees, but mainly ... read more

We both have colds! Not bad colds, but colds none the less. At least it’s not Covid. It’s been passing through the bus for the last couple of days, and it looks like it’s our turn now. Fortunately, I have the pharmacy of Jody to keep us feeling better soon. Meanwhile, we’re also at the beach! Last night we arrived at the Melia Resort, while technically in Torremolinos, it’s just outside Malaga on the Costa Del Sol. Our room is across the street from the bridge and we can see the Mediterranean from our balcony. This morning was a “relaxed start” which means we were able to sleep in a little, as our tour did not begin until 9:00. So we got to bed early last night and were able to sleep in today, so we ... read more

After last night’s Flamenco exhibition, it would be difficult to find anything more fun in Sevilla, so it’s time to move on again. This time we’re leaving Spain again, even if it’s just for a few hours, to visit Gibraltar, which is actually part of Britain. We can't actually bring the bus into Gibraltar, both because it’s too big to get very far, but more because the bus and our luggage inside are subject to search by British Customs and this could cause a long delay. There has always been animosity between the Spanish and British Governments, but it has really been flaring up lately due to Brexit, and this has been causing customs delays. The story goes that back in the 18th century, when Spanish king didn’t have any children, the children or grandchildren, of ... read more

Today was our second day in Sevilla, and I must say ut’s pretty great to be back where it’s warm! Some people are complaining about the heat, but we don’t mind it at all. The hotel is really nice, but somehow the Wi-Fi just sucks. It worked perfectly yesterday afternoon when we arrived, but nobody has been able to logon since yesterday. Looks like I’ll be uploading late on the bus again tomorrow. That worked out fine this morning, but it did take a while to upload the pictures. It was also very bumpy on the bus, but as soon as I finished, the road smoothed right out and was perfect for the rest of the day. This morning we headed off to the ancient city of Cordoba. We met up with our guide, Gema who ... read more

It’s time to say adios to Portugal, it’s only been a few days, but it’s time to head back to southern Spain. I’m not sure why I thought we were going to Costa-del-Sol today, but because I did, we thought it would be cold and we wore jeans. But we are actually going inland to Sevilla, were it’s hot! When we got off the bus it was 37C or 98F and that is certainly hot, even by Florida standards! But we’re now true Floridians, so we just dealt with it. Those of us from Florida, Arizona, and Texas didn’t have much trouble, but some of the northerners were dying. Sevilla is a beautiful city of about 800,000, home to the third largest cathedral cleverly named the Cathedrale de Sevilla, actually the official name is Our Lady ... read more

We started out our day, after a delicious breakfast of course, with a tour of Lisbon. Our local guide Leonore was great! The first portion of the tour was just a bus ride through Lisbon, pointing out some of the squares and a little of the local history. Lisbon proper isd about 800,000 people. But it has a traditional suburban community outside the city of about another 2 million people, many of whom work in the city and commute at the end of the day. The city has been a major city for a very long time. It is the second oldest city in Europe – only Athens is older. It’s early days included about 500 years of of rule by the Moors. The heyday of Lisbon is in the 15th and 16th centuries when world ... read more

After a couple of quick, one night stands in Salamanca and Porto, it’s time to relax for a couple of days in the capital city of Lisbon. But first, there are a couple of stops along the way. The first is the famous Catholic pilgrimage city of Fatima. The nuns at St-Margaret's would be proud that I remember most of the story of Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta, and the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1917. I remember as a child that the 2 places we should want to go, other than Rome and the Vatican of course, were Lourdes and Fatima, pilgrimage sites and modern miracles, with Fatima being the most recent. There were evidently 3 secrets of Fatima, not that I remembered the details, but I did remember it had something to do ... read more

After a great breakfast in the hotel, today we say adios to Spain and head out to Portugal. Fortunately, Spain and Portugal have a passport agreement between them that allows for easy transfer between then, so when we crossed the border, we didn’t even slow down to interact with the Border Police. According to Dominic, they have the authority to stop us and check our passports, but they don’t usually, and they didn’t this time. As you enter Portugal, there’s about a couple of kilometer stretch of various run down shops. Evidently, before the EU was formed, this was a “no man’s land” which offered tax-free goods as it was neither Spain or Portugal. Since the EU was formed, there are no tax-free zones, so the shops are just a remnant of a bygone era. Once ... read more

After the hectic pace of yesterday, today promised to be slower and more relaxed. We woke up at 6:45, showered and left the suitcases outside the door at 7:30 while we checked out and ate breakfast. By 8:30 we were on the road, outbound from Madrid. Today was also seat assignment day. To make it fair for everyone on the bus, we initially choose seats with friends or loved ones either in front or behind us, but not across. Every day we move 1 seat towards the rear, so that everyone eventually gets to sit on both the left and right sides and at the front and back of the bus. None of this is important, and most people don’t really care where they sit, but the most important part of this exercise is that we ... read more
