Today is a quiet travel day as we make our way to Stockholm for the next two days. The itinerary shows us arriving in Stockholm around 4:00PM, dropping our stuff at the hotel, and hopping on a boat to head out to dinner. Maja decided that it would be too hectic to try to head on out to dinner after a long day on the bus, so the dinner was postponed until tomorrow night after we had rested. Good plan! So, this morning we hit the road at 8:00AM and left the metropolis of Gothenburg behind to head northeast the 300 miles cross country to Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. Along the way we plan to make a couple of stops and still make it into Stockholm by 4:00PM. The first stop is at the Grannabergets ... read more

After yesterday’s rainy afternoon in Copenhagen, the forecast for today was windy in the morning with temperatures rising during the day and a bright sunny afternoon in Gothenburg, Sweden as we headed northeast. Unfortunately, the weatherman could not have been more wrong. As we left a slightly breezy Copenhagen in the morning, the rain began and the temperature began to drop. By the time we got to Gothenburg, it was cold, rainy, and we were in shorts and t-shirts. But the bus ride was nice, and the scenery began to change as we crossed into Sweden and headed northeast. Maja went over some of the differences between Denmark and Sweden that we may not have noticed. There are not nearly as many bicycles in Sweden as Denmark, as all of Denmark is almost completely flat while ... read more

Today is our second day in Copenhagen, and it was expected to be demanding. Unfortunately, the weather for late in the afternoon is not looking good and our evening excursion may be canceled. After a great night’s sleep, my body clock seems to be back on schedule and after a great breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, pineapple chunks, orange juice, and coffee, we were ready to hit the road at 8:00AM. Jody also slept well, and other than a little extra chattiness, is also getting back to normal. The plan this morning is to meet up with our local tour expert and do a combined walking and bus tour of Copenhagen. Benedikta is a native of Copenhagen and seemed to know everything that was possible to know about her hometown. After driving through some of ... read more

It’s hard to believe that another year has passed. I reached the milestone of 70 years old, and somehow Jody just keeps looking younger every year. After last year’s post-Covid hectic pace of 2 Caribbean cruises, a week in Sanibel Island, a trip to Spain and Portugal, and a River Cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, we decided to slow things down a little. Though we did take a Caribbean cruise in March, and plan to take another in September, our only major trip this year is this current trip, using Insight Vacations for the third time, to Spectacular Scandinavia and Its Fjords. The trip begins in Copenhagen, Denmark, passes through Stockholm, Sweden and ends up in the Fjords of Norway ending 15 days later in Oslo, Norway. The weather here is cooler than last year’s trip ... read more

Today we are in Budapest, and it is the last day of our cruise. The ship continues on to Bucharest for another week, but most of the passengers get off here. There are options to stay in Budapest for a few more days in a hotel or take a bus to Prague for a couple of days also. But we figured two weeks was enough, and we’re tired and ready to head home. The included tour of Budapest is called a Panoramic View of Budapest. In Viking River Cruise speak Panoramic means you get on the bus, they drive you around the city pointing out some of the sites and then drop you in the center of town for an hour or so to shop and drive you back to the ship. That didn’t sound very ... read more

This is our second day in Vienna, and perhaps we should have planned our time better, but this morning instead of venturing into the city center, we are embarking on an ebike ride along the Danube into the countryside. Neither of us had ever ridden an ebike, but earlier this summer we did a 26-mile ride on our regular bikes, so we figured we could handle it. Our group consisted of 14 passengers including us, and 3 tour guides with Wolfgang taking the lead and the others following in the rear to make sure no one got lost. Having never seen an ebike, I assumed it was some sort of electric motorcycle, but it was not. It’s basically just regular bicycle, in our case it was an 8 speed with a selection knob on the right ... read more

It was a rainy when we woke up in Vienna this morning. After a few hectic days, we decided that today would be more of a day of rest. We started our morning with the close-up walking tour of Vienna. The difference between the close-up walking tour and the regular walking tour is that the regular tour drove around Vienna in the bus and you looked out the window, and they dropped you close to St-Stephens Square near the church. The close-up tour was more adventurous, which means instead of getting on the bus, we walked to the subway station with our tour guide Antonija and rode the subway into town. There were 14 of us brave souls who went on the close-up tour with its promise of 10,000 steps (Jody got 10,000 steps, I only ... read more

Today we officially left Germany for the last time and crossed into Austria. We began our day with a walking tour of the Melk Abbey. The Melk Abbey was originally founded by the Benedictine monks in the 11th century and has been in continuous operation up to the present day. There are currently 24 Benedictine monks living on the premises and it still operates a Catholic School in most of the building for several hundred students. It is considered a private school since the education is Catholic and it charges a tuition of 104 Euros per month. The building was expanded to its current size and baroque architecture in the 17th and 18thcenturies. There was a fire in 1974 that damaged portions of the building that resulted in a major restoration in the 1990’s. Unfortunately, photography ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Passau September 9th 2022

We woke up this morning to rain and our first excursion was a walking tour of Passau. So we put on our warmer clothes, grabbed an umbrella and headed out to meet our local guide right outside the ship. Suddenly, the rain stopped, and we didn’t need the umbrella after all. Our local guide, Esther, was a very charming Asian woman from Singapore, who had married a German and moved to Passau about 10 years ago. It is a typical medieval town like we have been visiting with a population of about 50,000 people. Its main claim to fame is that it exists mostly on a peninsula where the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers meet. In fact, looking down on the peninsula from above, the difference in color of the Danube River which is more bluish ... read more

Today was migratory day on the Viking Vidal. Last night we met the ship in Passau, Germany but we weren’t supposed to be there until tomorrow because of the swap. For that reason, they moved the ship from Passau to Engelhartszell, Austria for the night. So, this morning we boarded the coach for the 2-hour bus ride back to Germany to visit the medieval town of Regensburg. Of course, after the tour it was a 2-hour ride back to Engelhartszell, Austria for the night. Tomorrow we will sail the ship back up the Danube to Passau, Germany where we will have a parking space available for the day and finish up our visit to Germany before continuing back down the Danube into Austria the next day. Very confusing, but we just go wherever they tell us, ... read more
