Riding the Void 5 First, a ride report without pictures. How could that be you might ask? Well, when you fail to copy the pictures from the camera’s memory card and then turn that card in for scoring not to be returned…..well, you have no pictures. So I’ll just have to paint the pictures for you. The Void 5 for us kicked off in Valdosta, GA. We planned an early departure so we could be there in time to rest a bit and then socialize. The concept was a quick trip to Birmingham to visit Bogart’s BMW who was having a going out of business sale with loads of discounts, and then straight to Valdosta. 3:00 AM is always a nasty time to wake up, but that’s what we did Thursday morning enroute to the International Balloon Festival in Albuquerque, NM. The plan was to meet Don and Benny in Cuba, AL at 5:00, ride hard to Amarillo, TX for steak and a good nights sleep. That plan quickly went down the drain! We stopped for gas in Jackson, MS and once back on the interstate I noticed how poorly my motorcycle was handling. A dive off at the next exit revealed that my rear shock was blown. What that means is the bike was supported only by the spring without any dampening action. It was like riding a 1000 pound pogo stick! 5 Days On the Road It was going to be an easy 5 days on the road picking up a few National Park Stamps that we didn’t already have in our portfolio. Of course, nothing is ever as easy as it sounds. The plan was quite simple…..head out of Alabama via interstate and then transition to backroads only. Departing Chattanooga that part of the plan quickly disintegrated as we ran into rain, gentle at first but slowly transitioning into monsoon like proportions. Seeing some of the backroads we had planned in Tennessee in the rain wasn’t going to be a good idea, so we continued on the big road into Knoxville.
