After much debate and consideration, we decided to fly from Bangkok to Siem Reap rather than take the bus/taxi. It was the most expensive flight that we had, but in the end decided that we didn't want a 10 hour bus trip and made it an anniversary present to ourselves to fly. (Number 30!) I regret that we didn't do much local transportation on our trip, but maybe next time we will be more adventurous. Rumour has it that the Bangkok Airways pays the government not to fix the roads. They are so bad and the ride so uncomfortable that people would rather pay extra to fly. Next time we would arrange our trip so that we did not leave from Bangkok, as there are many other border entries. The tuktuk driver who picked us up ... read more

We arrived in Bangkok on a Thursday and were immediately hit by the heat and humidity. Must have been in the high 30's everyday that we were there. Going on recommendations of friends in China, we had booked a hotel on Rambutri Street for two days. We did not realize that we were in the absolute center of twenty-something backpacker heaven - one short block from Khoa San Road - the Mecca of all backpackers. New experience for us- we kept thinking of Chris and his trip a couple of years ago - wondering if he had gone here, stayed there, eaten here or done this! As it turns out, he has and he did! Our first order of business was Rick’s appointment, which turned out great. The Bangkok Nursing Hospital is used by many Maple ... read more

Chiang Mai in northern Thailand was our third stop of our winter holiday. We hired a taxi from the airport to take us to our guest house that again, we had booked on line. Driving down the back roads that got smaller and smaller, we wondered what we had gotten ourselves into. When the driver stopped in front of a ‘rustic’ looking wooden gate, we were both concerned, but we had a real treat behind the gate. A wonderful Thai/Chinese woman named Aor owned an antique furniture/restoration business. The house that she lived in with her 81 year old father was 154 years old and just beautiful. She had added 4 Thai style bungalows in the large yard and started a guest house business 3 years ago. The area was more expensive than the old town ... read more

On Sunday we flew from Kuala Lumpur to Phuket, Thailand on our $18 tickets (thank you Air Asia). We were not sure what to expect as Chris had not been too impressed with the city of Phuket, so we only booked 2 nights at a place that Rick had found on-line. We figured that we could move someplace else if it was not suitable. Much to our amazement it was one of the ‘wows’ of our holiday so far. The Kata Lucky Villa was a wonderful oasis in the middle of a busy tourist area-a total hidden gem. Not even the cab driver from the airport new where it was, and he came in to take a business card when he saw it. Although a bit more than we had budgeted for, we decided to ... read more

Our south-east Asia adventure began with a very long day, leaving our apartment early morning on Monday, January 18. Dressed in our shorts and warm weather clothing we left the snow and cold of Jinshitan with Autumn, who drove us through a foggy start to the Dalian airport. We were very happy to be leaving Rick’s crutches at home, as he had started walking with only the help of a cane and air cast a few days before. A lot more freedom and not having to deal with carrying crutches was great. From Dalian we flew to Hangzhou, where we met up with several Maple Leaf staff who were off to various points south as well. We arrived in Kuala Lumpur early evening that same evening, with still one more short flight to the Malaysian Island ... read more

Coming from northern Alberta, we know what cold is. And when it is cold, a person bundles up, sits in front of the television (or fireplace) and drinks hot chocolate - or other warm beverage. It was not in my range of thinking that I would be heading out to the airport for a trip to Harbin- to check out an Ice Festival - on New Year's day, with the temperature at our destination a frosty -39 Celcius! It so reminded me of one year ago when Connellans, Tutts and Berrys met at the Nest in Slave Lake for a 3 day ski and wine trip, departing at -40. Both of these ended up being fabulous trips, though. Leaving Rick behind, I joined Fairy (our intrepid tour guide), her husband Paddy, Marion as well as Peter ... read more

Merry Christmas to all of our friends and relatives. It has been such an exciting five months here. We wish that everyone of you could be here to celebrate with us and join us in the wonderful diversity of people, cultures, food, landscape, etc, etc, etc, that we have experienced. When I look back at our home page with 35 years in Peace River, we were definitely a bit hesitant and nervous as we started this journey, but can't imagine our lives without all that we have been exposed to here. Funny how things always work out - God definitely has a plan! We were planning on a very low-key holiday (Well - sort of a holiday - Who's complaining about a long weekend though). We actually have two long weekends in a row - one ... read more

We joined the biker crowd in October. Who would have thought that this would have been our mode of transportation in China! Many of the locals and quite a few of the teaching staff have bikes, which really opens up your world. We have seen so much already that we never would have been able to on foot or by train. It is quite the sight for see us on the road - white haired Rick driving along with Gail gazing around taking pictures on the back. Too funny! The latest trip to the market was the best - it was freezing cold this morning and very windy. We have only peanut butter and a couple of onions in the fridge. So we have to go the market and have decided that being really cold for ... read more

This blog is a continuation of our weekend trip with Fairy. After we left the rural villages we drove to a huge apple farm where we had some lunch and toured the area. After we drove to Bing Yu Village home of the Bu Yun Mountain Hot Springs. The hot springs area was a bit disappointing as we were expecting something like the Rockies. All in all and interesting experience. Rick made a hit with a bus load of chinese tourists who all wanted to have their picture taken with him. ... read more

Our latest trip was only a weekend adventure, but it is amazing how much you can fit in to a couple of days. Fairy is the Chinese wife of a B.C. teacher. She runs a small shop with a variety of services: travel guide, massages, trinkets, as well as funding several charities in the region. She is quite an amazing woman. We signed up for a trip with her in october which turned out to be much more than we planned on. Our trip pictures are on two entries - the first one to the village and the second to the apple farm and hot spring resort. The village is where she spent 6 years with her mom and brother during the 1960's when Chairman Mao decided to 're-educate' any one with money, culture or an ... read more
