Si Phan Don; is the real name for 4000 Islands - and comprises of two main islands - Don Det (where we based ourselves) and Don Khon (a larger island connected by a small bridge). Don Det is unique - at least to me. It's extremely laid back and slow paced, and though sometimes annoyingly slow, it was a nice change from the crazy antics of it's northern cousin - Vang! With only receiving electricity in 2006 it is easy to see why this mellow town is so tranquil. Natives even still wash daily in the river. There's two main streets - Bungalow Boulevard (as i aptly named it), which ran along from the "beach / port" - provided the majority of the accommodation, and faced south on to one of the many Mekong tributaries. The ... read more

Wow...what a place. Vang is the kind of place that definitely separates the two types of travelers - the traveling type; and the reveling type. Vang Vieng is an incredible amount of fun and i spent the first few days trying to work out how to bring tubing back to London, my conclusion; it would never work - it'd never pass Health and Safety and we'd never have the weather! Tubing is one of those experiences that you hear about and you know it'd be good, but it isnt until you do it you realise to what extent. Saying that, after our 8 day stint I was ready to head to the sleepy south. The second day of Tubing Hughbie left and i developed what I thought at the time were liver pains (still dont know ... read more

So Phuket....not much to say. Patong is pretty seedy and disgusting. We went to a ping pong show...when in Rome...and it was stomach wrenchingly sick. The poor frog and budgie she plucked and the darts were all too much for us to handle and swiftly moved on. Just in time to miss the monsoon which ensued shortly after. After spending as little time on Kata beach as possible we flew north to Chiang Mai. Wow, what a place. If a city could be hidden, this would be it. Deep in northern Thailand's jungle this major city has developed. Steeped in cultural significance this lackadaisical place has something for everyone. The Zoo here is unmissable. Check the pictures for the different species of animals here. Again we took a ped up to the view points which disappointed ... read more

From Chiang Mai we headed east to Laos. After a bout of panic we made our overnight bus to Vientiane...just! It was the good part of 18 hours including the time taken to organise our visas at Udon Thani and Nong Khai. After a short wait at Vientiane bus station it was straight back on a mini bus for the four hour trip north to Vang Vieng - the home (and most likely inventor) of Tubing - Def. "floating down a river in an inner tube from a tractor tyre, whilst intoxicated. Often followed up with swinging on a zip-line and a Lao Lao shot". The infamous rocky road showed no mercy, and to make it worse the road followed alongside the meandering Mekong River - Hugh's motion sickness will vouch for this. In an ironic ... read more

We took the short trip over to phangan on the 30th in preparation for the Full Moon New Years Eve party - what a night. More fun and frolics, though no one burnt themselves! Have to say it was immense, visited Mushy/Mellow mountain again - the music was banging!! There was one thing missing though...The Grim Sleeper missed the boat, Hugh you absolute mong! However - I did sober up in time to see the destruction. I have to say it was actually pretty disgusting, even Andreas will have to admit after doing his party trick. The beach was a disgrace and its such a shame that they are destroying what probably was a lovely landscape once upon a time. This trip definitely swapped all aspects - princess' to paupers, idealization to realization and don't even ... read more

Well I havent written for a while so here is a little update. Quite a bit has happened in the last few days...first thing worthy of mentioning was the full moon party on Haad Rin beach, Koh Pha-Ngan. I took the decision early on to travel light and take only the bare essentials as I was sure I would definately lose them. With my keys tied to me and my camera also fastened in place the fearsome foursome set off like shoeless peasants. In one word - 'wow', what an amazing party - at least 3000 people partying, drinking, fire dancing, absolute mayhem. Had a few samsong buckets, did the limbo with a rope that was on fire...of course, did the slip and slide, lost everyone, how typica...but a blessing in disguise!! I made some amazing ... read more

Caught the overnight coach to the port on the south side of Thailand (8 hours). From there is was a two/three hour wait for the light to come up so we could jump on the boat to Koh Tao. It was by far worth the wait...this island is beautiful, so picturesque. Our first day consisted of...snorkling, amazing food for dinner, and rather overdue piss up. More to follow...I am off to enjoy more of this idyllic place. Now that i can draq myself away from the beach I can write a little more. We've been seduced by one of the restaurants who now have our business every night... a Barbecue without fail. Suffering yet again from bed bugs but trying to not let that affect this place. Tom and I have managed to find a gym ... read more

Recent news - Mark has now joined to make us the fearsome foursome. We all went out last night to a couple of the bars/clubs along Khao San Rd - very strange and a little depressing to be truthful. I can really see the extent of poverty this place incurs - many of the women don't have a choice in their career selection. On a more positive note we met some that weren't sex workers - Leg and Joy!! Lol. The following morning we braved the K San Rd again...."NO I don't want a bloody suit or tuk-tuk". Hugh and I did however have our feet cleaned by a tank of Garra fish - what a weird feeling that was, very ticklish at first but once they got going it was strangely enjoyable as they nibbled ... read more

Well, this is my first entry of my very first blog, so I'll make it punchy and to the point, the jokes can come once I'm up and running. Experienced the worst journey I have ever made. The flight was unbelievably long, made worse by the stop-over in Oman. We got to Bangkok around 8pm and jumped in a cab straight to Khao San Road. All the hustle and bustle you would expect from a Thai city. After some careful consideration we chose the more 'luxurious' room to kip for the night, a shower AND a/c. The first night we were pretty tired and so just got some food and went to sleep. In the morning we headed down to the Siam centre to sort out electricals. The only place where so many people can own ... read more
