Asia » India » Goa December 13th 2009

Life was easy in Goa. With my eyes fixed on the Arabian sea-I kicked back in my loungechair, sipped on banana lassi after banana lassi, soaked up the rays of the sun, observed the white european-looking travellers strip off all their clothes with no pretense of modesty,as the Indian tourists preserved theirs; wearing nothing less than their sari's,full length collared shirts and jeans as they frolicked in the water-all whilst listening to the cruisey tunes of Bob Marley and The Eagle's 'Hotel California' drifting out of the restaurant beach-shack nearby, where I had become such a regular that whenever I tried to pay my bill I was always told to "just fix it up later",knowing that I would surely be back for more, either that, or just a really good tactic of theirs to make sure that I would come ... read more

Madam, if you don't trust me, you can turn around, and go find another taxi ok... What was this guy on about? Was he not aware of the reputation that preceded him and that of his country? He was a taxi driver and I was a simple western tourist with invisible dollar signs stamped on my forehead, and together, we were attempting to do business-in India.Trust was never going to be apart of this equation. But his indignation wasn't entirely without reason;I guess he was offended that I had just told him, that if I was to find out that the "authorised" badge he was wearing around his neck and the price he was asking for the taxi ride was all apart of a scam, then I'd be more than happy to go around spreading vicious ... read more

Middle East » Turkey November 19th 2009

If I was to wake one morning forgetting just what country I had found myself in that day, all I'd need do is listen to the discernable clues drifting on through the window to help decipher that conundrum. In Romania it was the trotting of the horse and cart as it cumbersomely made its way down the road, in Holland it was the quiet but distinguishable turning of the many bicycle pedals as their passengers whistled their way by and in Turkey- it was the slow reaching cry, of the muslim call to prayer. Arriving in Istanbul, I was more then aware that this was the first time my worldy wanderings had taken me to a country of a predominantly Islamic culture, but at one and the same time I was more than a little ignorant ... read more

Europe » Netherlands October 25th 2009

Holland falls into the category of rich western europe-and funnily enough-its financial prosperity only adds to my reasoning of why I think this country is so unique, and why every other nation, not just the rich, should aspire to be more like this one. That I know is a big statement to make, but if anyone is deserving of it-it's the Dutch. Geographically, this country is so tiny that if you were to be scanning the world globe, blinking and missing it would be entirely probable-but the manner in which the people carry themselves and their ability to lead (in my opinion) on the no small matter of social progression, more then compensates for any physical shortcomings that fall their way. It has become well known for its liberal stance on policies towards drug use, prostitution,euthanasia..and the list goes on..but you would ... read more

Balkans continued... As I am wanting to keep everyone upto date on my travels (finally!), these next two entries will be relatively short, text wise. It's been two months since I left Romania, and my affection for it, has not wavered. I'm a bit like someone in love perhaps-wearing rose-coloured glasses;as I fell for her flaws as well as her numerous qualities. It's the imperfect state of the country that drew me in- stray dogs roaming the streets, crazy drivers, public transport never arriving or leaving on time- all those superficial things dont matter, when you can look beyond and appreciate the place for what it is, and not think less of it, because of what it isn't. Present reflections ... -Rules, sometimes, are made to be broken-if your instinct tells you so. I noticed a little old lady lingering ... read more

The train you are on starts heading in the wrong direction;already an hour past its expected arrival time. You look up the menu to see what your options are-Meat..bread...Meat..bread... some cheese.....Meat..bread... You see buses with rosary beads hanging from the rear-view mirror and images of Jesus and the whole gang staring down at the vehicle's occupants.Gripping on to the seat in front of you, driver hooting his horn.. making yet another unsuccessful attempt at hurdling his way past a group of motorists;you start to think his fondness for all things religious, is less about faith and more about necessity- as he,and the rest of the crazy balkan drivers, need all the help they can get. Yes,I know,it's been awhile. Expensive internet cafes; overcoming 'bloggers block';trying to avoid the impatient glares of fellow travellers the second I ... read more

Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Kraków July 27th 2009

I've been trying to find words, let alone the right ones,to describe my thoughts on Krakow. But,if I was to wax lyrical about all its charms; the old square and its castle- to name just two...well then, it would simply give you the false impression that I was actually 'present' when visiting these places. Physically present- I was.. But mentally-not so much. It's only now that I have left, that I can reflect on my time there and see it for what it really was. Throughout my time in Krakow, I kept telling myself, that the numbness and indifference I was experiencing, was due to the seemingly obvious explanation-that my love for Berlin, was overshadowing any warmth I could discover for this new destination of mine. But looking back,I should have known-that that line of reasoning was too simplistic. ... read more

They are crossing the road and coming my way.. Shiiiiit, the german police may just be about to open a can of woop arse on me! -something similar to what I was thinking when I saw the Gestapo..sorry, German police heading my way.Actually, I´m sure my thoughts were just full of expletives at the time, but I was too busy giggling silently to myself to notice. Being mistaken more for a European than an Aussie, having a little ( I swear mum) of a run in with the gest...german police and being invited to pack up my things instantly and head to Prague with a couple of Dutch dudes. Just a quite first few days in Berlin really. Or maybe not. -Berlin- The city that has me within it´s grasp -one that I just can´t seem to break ... read more

As their eyes locked on mine, I think each one of us got a sense of what the 'other' was thinking Man 1 - "..And here comes another one, she'll be easy" Man 2- "That she will be, but I'll get in before you do" Me- "Damn, and so it begins" Journal Excerpt, July 8th Greetings friends, family and randoms. So I could start by saying that I have done all the touristy things that Hong Kong has to offer, but that would be a lie. Instead I have been drawn into a more intriguing aspect of this place - that being the residence of 36- 44 Nathan Road. Also known as 'The ChungKing Mansions'. The stomping grounds of the so called 'mansions' have been described by some as a 'microcosm of the United Nations'. Take ... read more
