Monday 29 Sep – Budapest Today is 23C and sunny. Our hotel had THE best beds we’ve encountered in Europe. The only bed that stands out even more is the Westin heavenly beds (and of course, my own latex piece of awesomeness)! Eger is a cute town surrounded by vineyards. It’s famous for Bull’s Blood – a type of dry red wine. Nothing to do with animals but that was the rumour back in the 1500’s and it’s stuck ever since. There is an old fort that is being renovated, although you can still wander around it whilst they are hammering away. It gives a good view of the town. We decided to have lunch here before heading to Budapest since there was a 3-course meal on offer for 1300HUF ($7) at one of the restaurants. ... read more

Tuesday 23 Sep – Zakopane We regrettably checked out of our palace and given it was still raining, made tracks to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, about 30mins out of Krakow. It has been a working mine since the early 1200’s and only stopped production in 1997. It is only open for tourism now, and they sure do capitalise on it with a horrendous entry fee (more than any other attraction we’ve been to). There are 9 floors within the mine ranging from 62m – 327m below ground, 300km of corridors and about 3000 chambers. All individual tourists are forced into a guided group, aka Auschwitz style. Unfortunately our guide was an older lady with a bored expression and a quiet, monotone voice with such terrible English that we could barely understand her. Whenever someone asked her ... read more

Sabbath, 20 Sep – Krakow The rain and cold that was supposed to be in Vilnius has finally caught up to us. It started raining overnight so we slept in, had a lazy breakfast and then walked around our district, Kazimierz (the Old Jewish Quarter) in Krakow. There are a number of synagogues and Jewish restaurants all within the small suburb, although the businesses don’t all observe Sabbath as most were open. Since the Jews were forcibly relocated to the ghetto in 1941, other people moved in and have lived here ever since, so it is Jewish mainly in name. In 1987 some Jews started to return to the area however but they are still small in number and mostly older Krakovians. After wandering Kazimierz, we crossed the river to what used to be the ghetto. ... read more

Monday 15 Sep – Malbork, Poland We left Vilnius and made our last stop at Trakai Castle. This castle was built in the 14th century by the the Dukes of Lithuania and sits on a beautiful little island in the middle of a lake. It was in use until it was damaged in a war with the Russians in the 17th century, then abandoned. It was in a very bad state by the time they started to restore it in the 1920’s. They only finished the restoration in 1994 and now it’s fully intact and a great little castle to walk around. The photos looking over the lake to the castle are stunning. On the way out we bought a large punnet of raspberries from a little local babushka lady for $2. We got into the ... read more

Friday 12 Sep – Vilnius The clouds have gone and the sun has returned and we’re back to 23C with blue skies. Perfect burning weather for me! Our hotel last night was excellent. Tiki Inn, run by a local family who have travelled the world and decided to run a hotel/hostel from their house in Paluse. The rooms were plush, it was whisper quiet and overlooked one of the many lakes in that area. Dwayne and I especially liked their dog, Vella. She was very friendly and cute! We had a quick look around the lakes and wished we’d had more time but alas, we had to get to Vilnius. As it was, we were over an hour late for our rendezvous with the apartment agent. Luckily for us, apartment owners are very understanding over here ... read more

Monday, 8 Sept – Gauja NP, Latvia Bankwest sent me an sms overnight saying they’d blocked my card, despite speaking to me only yesterday. Yet another call to get it unblocked. Useless! Besides, how on earth does a €48 hotel charge equate to A$676,000 (which is why they were calling). I’m pretty sure there’s no exchange rate in Europe that matches that equation. Don’t call me about stupid amounts. I am not buying a chateau, and even if I did, we both know you wouldn’t approve it even if I authorised it. €2.85 = A$3.96. This was how much our delightful breakfast cost at Hotel Lacu Miga (henceforth known as Hotel Knowles). We bounded down the stairs at 9am to find a different lady from the night before, smiling and talking to us in Latvian, or ... read more

Friday, 5 September 2014 – Tallinn, Estonia We woke to a sunrise over Russia inside our Finnair plane, and were thankful that our plane was still in the air. As we came into Helsinki for a transfer to our flight to Tallinn, we were excited that only 30mins separated us from the start of our adventure. Unfortunately the tale from here gets quite frustrating. Finnair offered great service and the food was very good for airline food, but the planes were old and cramped, and the seats didn’t have much padding to them either. When we landed in Helsinki @ 6.40am, we only had 30 minutes before the gate was closing for our next flight to Tallinn and were horrified to learn that we had to go through Security and Immigration first. Sitting up the back ... read more

Friday, 22 June – Strasbourg, France Apparently Freiburg is the warmest city in Germany, and even after a thunder storm swept through during dinner last night, the temperature didn’t drop below 25 until later in the evening. I forgot to mention that we walked past an Audi dealer and saw a brand new TT Sport on sale for €38,990 (A$50,000). There was much weeping and gnashing of teeth. You know you’ve left Germany when the road works stop, which happened at the French border. One thing is for sure – Germans certainly know how to build a road, pity they don’t know how to drive it! Speaking of cars, since we were in the area we couldn’t miss the Cite de l’Automobile (Schlumf Museum). It’s an amazing collection of 400 classic, luxury and racing cars in ... read more
