South America » Ecuador November 22nd 2012

Ecuador is a different country with different traditions. It's so nice to take part of it as a volunteer and traveller. I love to obsere everything! People here in general are really friendly and always try to help you. I guess they don't like to say 'no'! Once in a panaderia two friends of me were ordering a coffee, but obviously they didn't have any. The waitress didn't want to admit that and always said like: ice tea would be better for you.. Look here we have all this refreshments.. And to an other question for coffee she said like yes it's possible but need a bit more time, ice tea would be ready from one to the other second.. And I bet she would have gone to an other cafeteria to buy some coffe if ... read more

All in all I'm staying for three months in ecuador, not only for travelling but primarily to work as a volunteer. Every monday to wednesday I teach english in the Montessori- Pestalozzi school in Otavalo. It's one of the very few schools which integrates children with disability. There are 52 children seperated into preschool, 1. class, 2./3. class, 4./5. class and 6./7. class. In every class I teach english twice a week. The kids here are so lovely! Every morning when I arrive at school, they run towards me and hug me! Some of them even give you a kiss and expect one back. Teachers and the kids are much more closer here, which I cherish! But teaching here in general is definitely different than in Switzerland. The kids don't really show respect to you as ... read more

Ecuador offers a lot of things to do in its marvellouse nature. Once we took the bus to Mindo and spent there a weekend. Mindo is a small and cute village in a cloudforest. It's unbelievable by how many trees the surrounding hills are covered and how green everything is. Therefore it has a lot of colibris, butterflies and orchidees to observe. Once we hiked to some nearby waterfalls. There we were walking from one to an other and decided to take a bath in one of them. It was actually quiet cold weather and the water was freezing. But the place looked so nice that we overcame our sanity. The water was so cold that we could hardly speak. But it was such a good feeling to take a swim exposed in nature. One girl ... read more

The employees at the immigration desk were welcoming me warmly. Then I went further to the baggage claim and was waiting tired and excited for my backpack. But it didn't came. So I went to a desk especially for complaints about baggage which didn't arrive. There were already around 10 other people standing cause their baggage didn't arrive as well. Hours later, as it was finally my turn they confirmed me that my backpack got lost somewhere and they would send it after. I should come the next day again to pick it up... I just thought to myself: Bienvenida en Sur-america! At least I could bank on the two volunteers who were picking me up at the airport and bringing me to the voluntary apartement in Otavalo. It took us two hours by bus to ... read more

I booked a flight from Merida to Caracas, to get further from there to Ecuador. From the city in Merida I had to take a taxi to the airport, which is a two hours drive. Everyone told me to be careful in choosing a taxi, because there are taxidrivers who are more interested in robing your things than bring you to a certain place. The man from the travelagency where I booked the flight offered me to bring me to the airport to the same price as it would coast with a taxi. I agreed and thought that would probably be safer. I appeared on time in the travelagency the day of my flight. But there was far and wide nobody who would give me a ride to the airport. Half an hour later appeared a ... read more

South America » Venezuela October 8th 2012

I spent my last week of my stay in Venezuela in Mérida, a city more in the west of the counrty. Mérida is 1600 meters above sealevel and surounded by mountains. It's a student city due to a lot of different universitys. I went there with Betty (an other swiss girl who attended all the trips with me) by bus, which took us 20hours and coast less than 50.-! We stayed there in a hostel from the same organisation as in playa colorado. It was a lovely place as well, finally with hot water and wifi again. It was kind of strange in the beginning, but incredible how fast you get used to it again. Mérida is a safer place than Purto la Cruz ore Playa Colorado, which means that we were able again to walk ... read more

Now I'm going to tell you about the most wonderfull trip I've ever experienced! It was the last of all and brought us to orinoco delta, northeast of Venezuela. We had to get up at 4o clock in the morning. on a monday, had a short breakfast, get our drybags with all the stuff for 8days ready and tied the kajaks on the roof of the Jeep. We drove around 5hours to a place called .... where we got everything ready and had lunch. Unfortunately our guids realised by then that we forgot the bread for the sandwiches. A young lady heard that and shared her fresh bread with us, which her father just bought for them! It's unbelievable how helpfull people are here. Afterwards we started paddeling gently down the stream- the beginning of 160km ... read more

South America September 29th 2012

We had quite a relaxed week back in Playa, with some spanish lessons and a lot of freetime. We all want to see as much as possible from the venezoelan livestyle considering the dangerous circumstances. So one afternoon we took the bus to a village called Santa Fe, from which everyone here sais it's not worth to see it! The city is quite dirty and looks desorganisated. The livestyle is just very different from ours. They keep everything simple, like for example sell things they have just on the street, cut hair under a umbrella ore even offer manicure on the street. The streets were darkbrown, lots of rubish and dirty water everywere and it also smelled bad. But i liked seeing it, and they've still almost every house painted in different colours, even if they're ... read more

An other trip brought us to Caripe, which is an around 5hours carride from Playa Colorado and located more in the middle of Venezuela. This time we were only 6people in the back of the jeep, which was way more comfortable. There we stayed in a campamento of a 35years old hippi-venezolani! Our group had a small wooden cottage as sleeping room. The campamento was very small and built in an easy way, but very cosy! Most of the time there was no electricity ore running water, but you get used to that. Around the house was a big garden with loads of oranges and manderins, from which we could eat as much as we wanted! The first day we hiked to a 90meter high waterfall where we took a bath in the pool under it ... read more
