the hard part the really hard part about learning german is when you return to america. then, the monolingual population bleeds the german language out of your ear.
if you discover some secret source of friendly german speakers in local communities, please let me know how you found them.
nice blog, by the way.

Hurray for Melon Schnapps! Hi Rachel, It's been so great to read about all your adventures. We saw your folks this past week, and Sarah was the best tour guide we could have asked for at Sea World yesterday. James did the steel eel with Sarah, but only if she would sit in front. . . . we can't wait to see you in person, and look through all your pictures and hear the wild tales . . .
Love,
Miriam
Vienna My brother studied abroad in Vienna for a year. My family visited him during Christmas. It was a very interesting trip! Schnitzel reminded me of chicken fried steak! We didnt get to attend a ball though! That looked like so much fun!
Hagia, Hagia! Wow, I've always wanted to see the Hagia Sofia, I've always had some weird fascination with it, it just calls to me. I'm glad you got to see it!
Really appreciate your contribution to widening our knowledge of the city. I'm going there in April and can't wait to learn and experience it. Thanks !!
I completely agree with being a SFT! When I studied in Dublin and traveled in groups, shopping was key, not seeing the beauty of the places we went to. It was devastating when we found ourselves outside Buckingham Palace at the exact time of the Changing of the Guards (which is a must-see) and they pulled me away because they were cold and bored and wanted Starbucks. When we went to Galway, I left the group while they were shoe shopping (in a store that we had in Dublin, mind you) and I got to see little nooks and crannies that were on side streets in the town that they weren't able to see. (I made them jealous with my pictures though!) I'm glad you are having a good time! I am so jealous of you experience!
Nice Poem Ha! Loved the Poem! I especially laughed about the Ronald McDonald part. I am going to Scotland in a few weeks and so decided to check out some travel blogs. Your pictures look very appealing and now I can't wait!
Sorry I'm a random comment-submitter,
K
England Hi Rachel! - Finally enjoyed catching up on all your back dated BLOGS. Glad to know all is well! Spoke to the Whitehorns last night and they wanted to know if you might be visiting them on your way home - said they are all ready for you if it fits into your schedule. Think they miss you! You are a brave person to be traveling alone - be safe.
Love - Nancy
Did you munch on cicchetti? One of my favorite parts about Venice were cicchetti bars. Cicchetti are little bread slices with local ingredients like fish or cheese. I equate it to Venitian sushi. One euro each and a one euro glass of house wine. It is a good way to make up for the fact everything else is so spendy.
Games I love your description of traveling with boys....I have a similar daily experiene living with the small boy in my house! By the way...of all of your pictures we have looked at in the last 30 minutes...Joseph responded to the pictures of games. He would like you to come "home" and play with him!
why the medusa heads weren't straight hi, love your pics, reminds me of my time there with the US Embassy.
don't mean to sound like an archeology nerd but Justinian(or was it Constantine?) dismalted the roman temple above where the cistern now sits, and using the biggest blocs(medusa and aphrodite's heads) used them to shore up the pillars(the 2/4 pillars they are under are higher that the rest). It was also a way for the Christian emperor to insult the old roman religions

the most important thing in the world is in your closet. Toilet paper. glad to see that your trips haven't turned you into a barbarian.
