Letter from Wolfgang Ziegler, ICC Ave Verum Dear Choral Friends, ICC-AV went over so fast! We all are still full of excitement and happiness you gifted to us with your wonderful musical contributions. Again and again I want to say thanks to all of you. You made our start so successful and easy. I hope you've all arrived home safely and I wish those of you who are still on tour lots of beautiful and memorable moments. Thank you for being our guests. I do hope to meet you again. Make a joyful noise Wolfgang Letter passed along from Chor Weidling via Melissa: Hello Melissa, Well I must say that you have made me, and indeed the whole choir very happy. Prima Voce has returned from a spectacular tour of Vienna and Prague. In the last ten days, they have seen amazing sites, and they have given 8 concerts (consisting of 16 totally memorized a capella pieces) for standing room only crowds, with an enthusiastic response at each performance. They received a silver designation at the competition, with a score of 88.6 out of 100. Not bad for our first international choral competition against some of the best choirs in the world who train specifically for this sort of competition! Two of our most exciting performances were at Esterhazy Palace in Haydn Hall, and two performances in the church for which Mozart composed his Ave Verum Corpus. But most importantly, they made some incredibly high level choral music and represented the university and the US with a ... read more

The last three days have been remarkable, but such a whirlwind that I have gotten behind In posting to my blog. I will attempt to catch up! One of the most remarkable opportunities thus far was the scheduled informal performance at Esterhazy Palace. We had secured permission to perform a short set of pieces at this hall, one that is considered by many to have nearly perfect acoustics, and, of course, was home to Haydn while he was under the patronage of the Esterhszy family. Pleasantly, this performance developed into a full conceret performance, since we were invited to continue singing on for a significantly sized audience as a result of several large buses of visitors arriving at the hall. We were thrilled to be asked to continue with our program so that the visitors could ... read more

(more pictures will be added to this) I am not sure I like waking at 3am each morning, but it does give one time to blog! Today was incredibly memorable on many levels, starting with our Vienna tour. We began with a walking tour that included the Imperial Palace, Stephansdom, the Mozart House, and variious sites in the central downtown district of Vienna. This also included some free time to explore the sites and to enjoy lunch at a cafe, which was located next to the monument to commemorate the end of the black plague. We then hustled back to our hotel, which was within a few blocks of the central distinct, and headed to the Klosterneuberg Monastary and Stiftkirche. The dark, heavy gothic Stephan's Cathedral and the gold gilded Baroque interior of the the Klosterneuberg ... read more

We have had an exhausting but incredible 48 hours of travel! After a 10 hr flight (Lufthansa) from Denver to Frankfurt, we walked from what had to be the entire length of the Frankfurt Airport to our connecting flight to Vienna. While on the connecting plane, several students engaged a young Slovak man in conversstion ( in perfect English, of course!) about the cultures, history, customs, etc. Then, after a short 1 hour flight (and a very unique cheese sandwich that was served on the plane), we arrived in Vienna and met Johan, our tour guide, who was there to greet us and Marcus, our coach driver. (And, by the way, congrats to Lufthansa Airlines for not losing a single bag!) Our students are already in love with Johan, our tour guide, who is quite knowledgeable ... read more

The day we have been waiting for has finally arrived, and everyone made it on time to DIA. All are through security and we are waiting at the gate. Lots of photos have been snapped and the first game of "spoons" has ensued! The Bon Voyage Concert last night was a huge success. They sounded wonderful, performing 16 a capella pieces with much poise and finess. The highlight of the concert quite possibly may have been Anthony"s public marriage proposal to his girlfriend with his rendition of "Marry Me" while accompanied by the "Prima Voce back up choir." (and she DID say YES!!) Next stop: Frankfort... read more

I did not expect to blog today and, while this is not tour related, it still relates. Today, I had the privilege of clinicing the choirs at Columbia Middle School in Aurora. Aurora is a suburban area on the east side of Denver. They did not invite me to come out, but rather, I invited myself about a year ago, when I heard them perform at a choral festival that I judged. They were by far my favorite choir of the day, and were up against many fine schools, ranging from middle school to high school. The minute they walked in, and then began to sing, they "lit up" the room. I just stopped talking and writing and sat back and listened. Now, I hear a LOT of choirs, and I KNEW there was something special ... read more

Our final week of rehearsal has proven to be incredibly productive. We have identified our remaining areas of focus, and have shared presentations of important facts on places where we will be visiting, performing, and sight-seeing. We have also done a bit of research on competing choirs participating in the International Choral Competition Ave Verum. It has been a tremendous week of growth and bonding and we are on track for a spectacular 10 days of European performing! Great work, everyone! Special thanks to Dr. Darrough for his very insightful clinicing commentary and to Melissa at Cultural Tour Consultants for setting up an incredible tour! I will be posting our promotional video, produced by Anthony Haro, in my next blog-post. Just a few days, now! Dr. B... read more
