It seems the last days, weeks, months, years have been full of horrible attacks on innocent people. I used to say that I didn’t want to go overseas as that’s where all the nasty things happen. I was quite happy staying tucked away in Australia where these things don’t happen. Thinking over the past few years, I realise that I was completely wrong. These sort of incidents have happened in my corner of the world as well as overseas. Melbourne and Sydney have seen some pretty terrible attacks on innocent and unsuspecting people. Whether these acts are on behalf of an organisation, or a ... read more

The cruise ends at Marseille on Thursday morning. I have booked in to Mama Shelter, a very funky Philippe Stark designed hotel complete with a bar, restuarant and terrace in the heart of Marseille. Check out the website, it is a hip and happening kind of place. I like Marseille, it’s a lovely place to just wander and people watch. Friday morning, I will take the 2 hour 40 minute train ride to Nice. I must admit, I was hoping to again stay at the beautifully eccentric Hotel Wilson, but alas, I wasn’t able to get in. After a bit of reasearch, I found the very pretty Le Petit Trianon. This hotel is situated on the opposite side of Nice’s main thoroughfare to the Hotel Wilson, but about the same distance from the promenade and ... read more

Ok, return flights to Rome sorted with Emirates, just on 3 weeks apart. Now to sort the route and accommodation…… and lots of youtube and sticky-notes. I like travelling by train in Europe. It has a lot of advantages, apart from the scenery that you get to appreciate: You only have to get to the station a few minutes before the train is scheduled; You don’t have to wait around to collect your luggage; The stations are in the heart of the cities, so you don’t have 40km taxi rides to pay for; You have more space than on planes; and A lot of the train stations are really beautiful. So I arrive in Rome on the Sunday night and need to be in Genoa in Italy by Wednesday to get on the MSC Cruise ... read more

Europe May 18th 2017

After taking the amazing trip last year, I had figured that maybe that was it for such far flung destinations for a fair while. But then came an email offering a 9 day, 8 night MSC cruise leaving from Genoa, Italy and traveling to Malaga, Spain, Casablanca, Morocco, Lisbon, Potugal, Barcelona, Spain and finishing off at Marseille, France. Casablanca? ….. That got me interested. I looked into it and found that with a single supplement and an ocean view cabin (It has a window), it was only about $1200. Bargain for 8 nights, food and five countries. Plus, being the economical traveller that I am, I had more than that left from the last trip. So then the research and planning started. Last year, my flights were booked through Qantas, but as fate would have ... read more

Last weekend, my daughter and I spent a wonderful 24 hours in Melbourne. It was all planned around Saturday afternoon’s Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Pixar concert at The Arts Centre’s Hamer Hall. The music served as a narrative to the abridged versions of Pixar’s many animations which were projected behind the MSO. Until we went in to The Arts Centre, Melbourne was experiencing an Autumn day right out of the box, fine, sunny and 27 degrees. When we left, 2 hours later, Melbourne had showed it’s meteorological split personality, torrential rain with a bit of flooding and about 14 degrees. We went back to our hotel to tidy ourselves up before a bit of a wander about the CBD. The Rendezvous Hotel in Flinders Street has a great location, beautiful historic foyer and really nice, modern ... read more

Europe October 7th 2016

I have recently returned from my first solo trip, three weeks in Europe for an Australian is a very steep learning curve. I picked up a lot of advice from others and found out things myself. Good advice.... 1. Carry a pen and paper. Pens are always useful, customs forms need to be filled out. If phones go flat it a piece of paper can record phone numbers, email addresses, etc. 2. Cheap fold up travel backpack from Kmart is brilliant to have in your kit. Put any shopping there and keep it out of sight and in one place. Perfect place for a water bottle too. 3. Trains in Europe come in different brands. Just because you have a ticket from A to B and you are at A and a train is going to ... read more

Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens » Pláka September 30th 2016

Apologies for taking so long to write this. It is now Tuesday night (actually, now Thursday night), the first part of my flights home left Athens at 4.20pm on Thursday, after a wait of around four hours at Dubai we left at about 2am Friday morning, landing at Kuala Lumpar at about 1pm and landing at Melbourne at 1am Saturday (local times used). Having an awesome daughter who insisted on picking me up from the airport regardless of the time of my landing, I decided to book a room at the Parkroyal at Tullamarine Airport (with super comfy beds). Last Thursday turned out quite interesting. Another Greek breaky of ham and cheese on buttered bread, this time with full confidence (all the awkward peering under lids to inspect the contends having been done the morning before). ... read more

Athens - Psiri Well, yesterday I left Hotel Wilson, that quirky 3rd floor hotel set just back a bit from the Promenade and pebbly beach of Nice. A kind man carried my big bag all the way down to street level. When he found out I was Australian, he confessed his love for Koalas, he told me to him, they were the best animal in the world! Where was he when I was checking in? So up the main thoroughfare towards the station again, (when I say up, it’s not really up hill, it just gives you that impression because there are a couple of bridges going over the road). The day before, in a fit of trying to be organised, I bought a train ticket ‘to the airport’ for €1.80. I say ‘to the airport’ ... read more

Europe » Monaco September 26th 2016

This time I am filling you in about my time in Nice, as well as my day trip to Monte Carlo. I left Montpellier (I so have a soft spot for that city) at around 9.15am, and travelled by train via Marseilles ( around 60 minutes stopover) to Nice arriving just after 3pm. I walked from the station, down the main street leading to the promenade. After a few minutes, I came to the narrow street called Rue de I’Hotel des Postes. This was another hotel taking up only a portion of the building, in this case, half of the third floor. And there is no lift. NO LIFT. This was why it was vital for me to re arrange my packing when I was in Montpellier. I was aware of the third floor/no lift set ... read more

Europe » France » Languedoc-Roussillon » Montpellier September 25th 2016

I wrote the blog today on the train between Montpellier and Marseilles, on the way to Nice. Sadly, it has been lost to cyberspace, so here I go again. Yesterday morning, I took a very fast train from Barcelona to Montpellier. Montpellier is the 8th largest city in France, and the third largest French city on the Mediterranean. It is also the quickest growing city in France over the past 25 years. This may be because it is home to three universities as well as three higher education institutions, which would explain the amount of young folk in the city. Anyone who reads my facebook statuses would already know how taken I was with the beauty of this city. It certainly isn't as well known as the other places I have visited during this trip, but ... read more
