We started our travel to Woolaroc Ranch and Preserve in Pawhuska, OK at 8:30 am, as we anticipated that it would take us approximately 4 hours to get there. Woolaroc Ranch and Preserve derived it's name from woods, lakes and rocks. The preserve was established and built by Frank Phillips, founder of Phillips Petroleum Co in 1925. It is a very large preserve for animals that roam the property such as water buffalo, many varieties of deer, zebras, ostriches, and other animals. The first stop in the Preserve was the Mountain Man Village. We spoke to the mountain man and he explained how they hunted and lived in the early days. He also show us how to throw tomahawks and we each got to shoot at a bear target with a flintlock rifle. We continued to drive ... read more

On Day 3 of our journey we woke up to the view of the Gateway Arch, across the Mississippi, which was at flood stage due to the previous day's storms. It was really windy and we were not sure if we were going to be able to tour the Arch. To our surprise, the Arch was open, so we made our reservations, with less than one half hour to get there. Not a problem, right as we are just across the river-except we had to go through security like at the airport and I forgot I had mace in my purse. While I waited in line, Al jogged back to the parking lot (about 1/2 mile) dropped of the mace, and jogged back. We got through security, bought our National Park Senior passes, picked up our ... read more

Day 2 of our journey, and we started by celebrating our 43rd Anniversary. We started out this morning at 9:00 am after enjoying a full breakfast in the Patio Room of the Hotel. Our first Anniversary gift was a parking ticket from the town of Huntington. We entered Kentucky at 9:15 am and started to look for blue grass, haven't seen any yet. We are heading to Lexington, Ky to visit the Mary Todd Lincoln house. These are some of the interesting facts about Mary Todd Lincoln. Mary was an aristcrate, she lived in a 14 room house, formally educated for 10 years and came from very large blended family. She spoke French fluently. Abe Lincoln, although he had little formal education, he was a lawyer, and lived in a one room house. His family had ... read more

We started our trip today at 9:00 am, with our first overnight stay in Huntington, WV. We are so excited to get on the road and hope to send lots of photos and interesting stories on the way. We crossed into Maryland at 10:15 am traveling route 64 through the scenic Appalachian Mountains. The weather was overcast so we did not take any photos. We reached WV by noon and stopped near Morgantown at the Forks of Cheat Winery and Distillery. Although they had authentic WV moonshine(very pricey) for sale, we opted for Pomegranate and Merlot wine. We travelled south route 79 which was surprisingly beautiful (after we got far enough south that the ground fog dissipated). It was very curvaceous, undulating and turning green. We now understand why they call the West Virginia University students ... read more
