The main (if not only reason) for visiting Siem Reap was to go to the Temples of Angkor. The temples span over an area as large as Manhattan in the US and were built over a period of 600 years, during this time being occupied by various Kings and had a population larger than London. We bought a 3 day pass and hired a tuk tuk driver to take us round, starting with the smaller temples on the first day and then leading up to the main attraction that is Angkor Wat, Bayon and Angkor Thom. I'm not going to write alot about the temples, as they are so vast and there would be pages and pages I could write so I'm just going to let the photos do the talking. The most amazing temple (in ... read more

The next stop on our Cambodian journey was to a small town called Pursat a few hours drive North West of Phnom Penh. The town was extremely small and there wasn’t really alot we wanted to do, or could do here. So we decided to make the most of our one night and as soon as we had found a Guest House and checked in, we were off in another Tuk Tuk a few kilometres out of town to the bamboo train (or as the locals call it ‘Norry’). The owner of the hotel came with us to the tracks and agreed a price for a one hour journey through the country side. We were told that we could go for four hours, but thought in the 40 degree heat it might be a bit too ... read more

Four weeks of seeing the beautiful Vietnam with my Mum and Peter, their holiday had unfortunately come to an end, so we all headed back to Bangkok the day before their flight back to London. After some more shopping in the shopper’s paradise that is Khao San Road and MBK Mall, we went for a meal and then back to our hotel ready for another early start the next day. We took the free shuttle bus from Plai Garden Hotel (near the airport) and said a teary goodbye to them both, it was so nice to have them here with us and sharing our experiences with them but sadly they had to go back to the ‘real’ world and leave us to it. We were planning on taking the Sky Train to the city centre but ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » North Central Coast » Thua Thien - Huế » Hué June 28th 2010

Our last stop on our Vietnam tour. Unfortunately we havent got enough time to make it up to Hanoi or Halong Bay as Mum and Peter have to be back in Bangkok on the 5th to fly back home and we are flying to Cambodia to meet our friend Emma who is coming over for a 2 week holiday. We wanted to make it as far north as we possibly could, so decided to take a bus to Hue (pronounced Hway). It was a pretty uneventful journey apart from having to stop half way because the coach had a flat tyre, we bought some custard cakes which came in a huge box. They were so horrible that even a poor little boy who was begging tried one and spat it out and gave the other ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Quảng Nam » Hoi An June 24th 2010

After a rather uncomfortable train journey (we had to pick hard seat sleeper as there were no other seats left!) we arrived 2 hours later than scheduled in the town of Danang. As arranged our hotel sent someone to collect us in a large taxi and took us to our hotel in Hoi An a short drive away. The hotel itself is really pretty, with a large courtyard and a pool in the middle. The rooms however arent as nice as they should/could be, especially for $25 per night. We spent the first day with a short walk along to the old town and along the river front. Hoi An is a UNESCO· World Heritage City, like Melaka in Malaysia but alot more preserved with prettier buildings and more atmosphere. There are no cars allowed in ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Khanh Hoa » Nha Trang June 24th 2010

Sadly, we had to leave Dalat and see what our next destination of Nha Trang had to offer. Lys, at our hotel, booked our bus tickets to Nha Trang. The coach was comfortable and we had the usual free bottles of water and wet wipes handed round. None of us were particularly looking forward to the journey, but it actually turned out to be really good. We went east towards Nha Trang on the new road, which led us through the most beautiful scenery we have seen so far. We wound our way down many many mountains, with a great view below and you could see for miles until the mountains stopped in the far distance. There were so many waterfalls on the way which made it even more spectacular, it was just a shame we ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Central Highlands » Lam Dong » Da Lat June 24th 2010

We arrived in Dalat on the 15th June after a long bus journey from Ho Chi Minh City. I had booked us a hotel online, YK Home Villa, which was a 10 minute drive from the city centre. When we arrived we were greeted by Lys who runs the hotel along with her husband and other family members. Our time in Dalat was made even more special by her and her family, as well of course all the beautiful scenery. On our first full day in Dalat we decided to book ourselves onto a Countryside tour and were picked up at 8am by a lovely tour guide called 'Buffalo', well that's what it translated to from Vietnamese apparently! We shared the comfortable mini bus with 2 other men who we had met the day before on ... read more

We checked in to our Bangkok airport hotel for our 3 night stay whilst waiting for my Mum and Peter to arrive. We took a taxi to Khao San Road, where we had visited 2 years before. It hadnt changed much apart from there seemed to be alot more street sellers and stalls set up along the road. We bought a few bits, nice and cheap compared to Malaysian prices, and then took another taxi to the massive MBK shopping mall. The mall had been closed for the past few weeks due to all the protests and had just recently opened up again so there were lots and lots of sales on. The mall is about 6 floors, 5 with shops and markets and then the top one with a cinema. The place was absolutely massive, ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Melaka » Melaka City May 27th 2010

FOREWARNING - THIS IS QUITE A LONG BLOG, SO GO AND GET YOURSELF A NICE HOT CUPPA AND A BISCUIT We were in Melaka (also spelt Malacca) until 8th June after arriving on the 28th May following a short but bumpy flight from Borneo to Kuala Lumpur and then a two hour coach ride to the city bus station. Melaka is on the west coast in the south of Peninsula Malaysia and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Town in 2008. The city was founded in 1400 by a Prince who fled Sumatra after an attack in 1377, the legend goes that the Prince landed on the coast of Malaysia and went out hunting. Whilst he was hunting his dog ran off and when he found it, it was face to face with a mouse ... read more

What happens when you put an Iban, Australian and Englishman together with some instruments and whiskey? I shall tell you in a moment dear readers We booked a flight back to Kuching as we didnt end up going to Brunei as it is too expensive and we didnt think it would be worth blowing a few days budget over 2 days. The flight from Kota Kinabalu was good, a bit bumpy but we made it here in one piece which is always a bonus! We took a taxi to our hostel which we had booked the day before, Tracks Bed and Breakfast, we'd booked a double room with shared bathroom. Tracks is great, lots of people coming and going but a really chilled out place with a great vibe and we would definitely recommend it to ... read more
