Well this is it! We are officially headed for home. How do we feel? The biggest issue with travelling is that you do miss family and friends and the interactions associated with them. The best aspect is that you are constantly doing and seeing new things. The experience is wonderful and is one that everyone should attempt in their life. It doesn’t need to be in a van or by camping. That is more economical and socially beneficial but what we are out there to do is to see the fantastic landscape of this huge country. So we feel glad that we took the trip and are still amazed at the variety of things we have been able to do. By having done a circuit (with onnly 600 klm from Three Ways (NT) to Mt Isa ... read more

It was difficult to pull up stakes in Kununurra. We really liked it there. So much to do that we really ran ourselves a little ragged. However, we did, and on we moved. The trip to Timber Creek was very easy and as usual we were there and set up before lunch TIMBER CREEK Timber Creek is a small town on the highway. The population is largely aboriginal. It felt a friendly town and the van park was fine. We had heard that the boat cruise on the Victoria River was very good so we were keen to stop over at Timber Creek to do that. However, right up to the time we arrived, they did not have the necessary six people. As we are getting near to the end of September, the Wet is building ... read more

Halls Creek was seen as a stopover and indeed it was. We were told to consider other options as the town might be a little unfriendly. We did not find that and although the caravan park was all red gravel, we found it a convenient spot to stay. The weather was warming and so the air conditioner was beginning to come into play. We love the warmer weather and are really looking forward to it. The rig is going well. We are closing in on 20,000 klm in the car and 10,000 klm in the van. The car is due for a service when we get to Darwin. HALLS CREEK As we said, Halls Creek is an overnight stay. We arrived early afternoon and after setting up we went off to check out the sights. Two weeks in Broome came and went very quickly. To round off the visit we decided to drive onto Cable Beach with our bottle of wine and watch the sunset as a backdrop to three teams of camels walking past and a couple of Pearl Luggers taking tourists on sunset cruises. It is very difficult to find caravan sites in Broome. We can’t believe how lucky we were to get two weeks! Jason was keen to come up to go fishing and that would have been fantastic but the cost was horrendous. His dad has promised to do a separate trip with him! DERBY We weren’t planning to go to Derby. That changed when we discovered that it was better to do the Horizontal Falls tour from there. We booked in for four nights . As ... read more

Just 100 klm out of Broome and we were yet to find a caravan site! We had chosen not to put ourselves under pressure by booking too far in advance. Not just in Broome, but for the whole trip. Anyhow, Rhonda looked at her mobile and saw that there was a signal so she started calling. We were under the impression that we would get into overflow parks set up at PCYC or the Pistol Club if we couldn't get a site in a caravan park. First call … ‘sorry, no sites’, second call … ‘sorry, no sites’, third call … ‘we can offer you four nights on an ensuite site and so we grabbed it immediately! To cut a long story short, we made a move to another ensuite site in the same park for ... read more

We had to backtrack a little to visit Point Samson. We had decided that we wanted to see Dampier and Karratha. We were lucky enough to get the last site and didn’t mind that it was on a sandy site. The park is only five years in the making and amenities were modern and clean. Happy hour is part of being on the road and there is always someone to share with. At Point Samson it was with people from south of Perth. Six of them! We forgave their love of the eagles and just chatted on. MILLSTREAM - CHICHESTER NATIONAL PARK We decided to take a day to visit this area. The usual story ‘you can’t miss it’. 425 klms later we decided it was well worth the trip even though there were a lot ... read more

Exmouth has been a great stopover. There is a lot to do in the area and the Big4 Park where we stayed was well appointed and just a kilometer stroll to the shops. We discovered Whalers, a local restaurant and coffee shop that served nice food and that elusive ‘good’ coffee. We were surprised on our arrival to see Rod and Lynne Dell . We first met them at Esperance and then saw them again at Jurien Bay. Whalers became a dinner venue for the four of us and the company and food was excellent. We’ve talked about our first week here and so let’s look at the last few days. We have now spent a week in Exmouth and understand a lot more about its appeal to Western Australians . It is about two long days travel north from Perth and it is a popular destination for the school holidays currently happening in WA. The holidays are over next weekend so we will have less competition for caravan park spaces as we move on up the coast. We still have the “Grey Nomads” to compete with though and there are plenty of them ! Ningaloo Reef extends to Exmouth from Coral Bay. It attracts people to the area as snorkeling can be done from the beach and the coral is only a few meters from the shore. The reef meets the ocean some way out and the huge wave breaks are entertaining to watch. The currents ... read more

Well, we are now moving north far enough to say that the weather is more reliable. Most days are reaching 25 deg with an overnight low in the mid teens. It is amazing that every place we visit offers something new and interesting. We are keeping very busy touring around and doing the things we can in each area. It is so far away that you don’t get to come over here very often. So we are trying to ‘do it all’ and having fun doing so. The car has been excellent even though we accidently put 2 litres of unleaded petrol in with the diesel back in Ceduna! As we had hoped, it was obviously adequately diluted. The van has given a few minor things to deal with but, apart from that, has been exceptional. ... read more
