My friends. I have been remiss in that you were left hanging with the last blog entry...as i fell asleep i dreamed of Senegal, Dakar, Isle de Gore', St Louis...sub sahara Africa...the door of no return...the beginning and the end for so many. Dakar...a riot a color, sights, sounds and smells...life did not begin in Africa....life burst forth from Africa! If Morocco was beautiful, Senegal is sensory overload! The depth of energy, the riot of color The hawkers shriek and the frantic compelling rhythmic beat of the drums....Senegal is life itself - Pure bounty Energy personified! The horses here are long legged and sleek, well cared for briskly trotting, effortlessly carrying simple flat bed home-made carts. Fish are fat and plentiful The grass is dry, the baobab huge and the women ebony gazelles The gender gap ... read more

This is absolutely the lap of luxury! It's just a tiny hotel, the weather is not great and the food not much better but, I am blissfully alone. For those contemplating it here are a few reasons why group travel should not be high on your list... In fact it's quicker to list why you should do it.... Economical... That's it. If you are not the type of person who likes a lot of interaction a lot of the time this mode of travel is not for you.... Or me! Anyway... the lovely Canary islands, walks on the beach, a small and friendly community, comparatively inexpensive, excellent coffee. It's been a wonderful respite from the rumbling, dusty, politics of the truck. Now tomorrow Senegal inshallah!... read more

Africa » Morocco December 1st 2012

Hummmm I guess from the drop down menu on this blog of places in Morocco I'm just about off the map! Essaouira, Agadir, Tiznit, Tan Tan.... All beautiful, vibrant, less and less populated (except for Agadir) Essaouira and our first glimpse of the Atlantic ocean in quite a while. Desert cliffs give way to a wild and sprawling coast home to a neat and ancient town with a thriving competitive fishing industry. Tiny seafood stalls clustered along the sea wall display a veritable glistening cornucopia of delights. Hawkers shout above each other waving live crabs and lobsters inches from your face vieing to lure you to their wares. Crowded picnic tables abuzz with a thousand flies, street musicians and chefs swirl around in the smoke of many many charcoal fires as fresh seafood is grilled on ... read more

Africa » Western Sahara » North » Laayoune November 30th 2012

Well it all sounds like a great adventure but honestly how many nights of desert camping do you think you can do? Hint... My threshold is one... Yes exactly one!!! Don't get me wrong, the stark beauty of the Western Sahara is something to behold... Heards of velvet camels, golden sand dunes interspersed with scrub bush and cactus roll unimpeded toward the horizon, an impossibly blue sea crashes against a wild and barren coast, beautiful yes, BUT....camping no! The incessant wind whirls sand as fine as powder into your hair, nose, eyes, ears and worse!...Grit everywhere! I flee the campsite and the fellow unwashed despite the starry nights and opt for a tiny hotel with running water in the bonafide border town of Laayoune. A brainwave! Little did I know the treasures that awaited me there ... read more

We've been on the road for several days, have camped in moon scapes equally barren and cold and seen the snow high in the Atlas mountains blush pink in the early morning glow. Numbed to the incessant bartering ive flead to the heights of a Berber village in the cliffs above Toudra gorge and had the best mint tea ever at the side of the road with Mahommed and Mahommed. Sitting on the throne of movie sets I've pretended to rule the world, but sharing tea with the most humble has humbled me and truly makes me appreciate my privileged place in the world There have been near misses with the truck as lorries barrel ahead over our side of the white line and force us off the road (a rule interpreted very differently here in ... read more

Africa » Morocco » Fès-Boulemane November 15th 2012

A wonderful train ride from Casablance to Fes gave us great glimpses behind the scenes, snatches of Moroccan rural life and breathtaking panoramic views. Here time seems to stand still and the old world of the Bible, Koran and Torah comes to life. Casablanca.... a typical port town as the world over, sordid and grim (but the best tagine ever)! Compliments to the king Mohammed 5 with his vision for the Moroccan people.... A gigantic mosque (Hassan 2) second only in size to the mosque in Mecca, rises from the rubble of poverty and grime a symbol of the hope and direction in which he aspires to lead his people. Fes.... The religious and traditional seat of all things Moroccan. The medina here a wonder of 9000 alleys, a labyrinth where one wrong turn equals 3 ... read more

Oh and did I mention that the morning after our first bush camping experience we had to dig the truck out? If all this seems a bit and out of order it's because one entry has been lost... Experienced blogger that I am Hope this helps.... First stop Fes then on to Rabat to meet the truck, then to Volubilis the capital city of Rome during its occupation of Moroccan territory... Camp for the night and while the others try to get their visas for Mauratania, Ghana etc (we already have ours) sis and I visit Casablanca then back to Fes for 2 days.... read more

So somehow in the wake of Hurricaine Sandy with cancelled flights, limited gasoline and overstuffed bags i've managed to kick off the grasping tendrils of Manhattan NY and make it to Amsterdam Neatherlands. This is the first leg of what is to be the adventure of a life time that has taken half a lifetime to get to ....an over 2000 mile overland journey from Fez Morocco to Accra Ghana camping, eating, sleeping and learning first hand from Mama Africa.... read more
