Up early again at 5.30 as off whale watching at 6.30. I must admit it was not easy getting up all I wanted to do was turn over and go back to sleep - but Mike made me a cup of rosie lee and that was it I was ready to take on the world- well go whale watching. So we get on the bus that picks us up from our digs and the first stop is to pick another couple up. Well I have never known a couple who only talked doom and gloom. Everything has gone wrong for them and they were not satisfied with anything about their holiday. So I tried to lighten the mood by saying well at least you would have had a good sleep and now you are going to ... read more

Well after a 12 hour journey on the Greyhound bus I can honestly say I am knackered and the overnight busses in Vietnam are 100 percent better as they have a flatbed rather than sitting up with a neck cushion for 12 hours. Thank goodness I had the hindsight to find one whilst we were in Airlie Beach otherwise I would have been even more knackered than I am now. We dropped our bags off at the place where we are staying which is called Sanctuary Lakes (yes I need some Sanctuary after that journey) as we arrived around 8ish in the morning. We went for a walk along the esplanade and found one place open where we could get a coffee and ask if they had wifi. The man looked as though we had just ... read more

Well we have checked our of our cell in the youth hostel in Airlie Beach to be honest we did get a good nights sleep so not all bad. Whilst waiting to board the catamaran we have been doing quite a bit of admin work. We now have booked our Greyhound Bus from Hervey Bay to Brisbane Airport where we will be picking up a hire car - then we will be staying with Mike’s daughter Jenni for a few days before flying off to Sydney. We have also got a studio apartment in Sydney which is very central - anyone looking for reasonable accommodation should check out Airbnb website - we seem to get some really reasonable accommodation at reasonable prices through them. It is really hot in Airlie Beach today so I think there ... read more

Well we have now been to the world famous toad race on Magnetic Island - I know you are probably saying world famous? That is what I thought but what a fun night we had. They auction off 8 toads and place them in a clear container and there is a large circle on the floor. Unlike the horse racing in Ascot, Dubai etc where the horse that passes the line first by a nose wins the race. In the world famous toad races it is the first toad whose bum is over the line that wins. There are 3 races and I managed to get a toad in the first race and he/she was called Kentucky Sue and it cost me $55 which seems a lot but I thought I was onto a winner and ... read more

Well arrived in Magnetic Island after getting the Greyhound bus and a ferry across. We are staying in a tent for a few nights bit different from the cottage in Port Douglas but great all the same. The tents have a wooden like shack over with a metal roof to stop the coconuts falling off the trees landing straight on the tent - not sure what is best coconut on tin in the middle of the night or direct on to the tent, ha ha Well the island is small but very beautiful is all I can say and there is one road going around it for all of 10k - so you can see the island in a day and we are here for 3 nights. So after 2nd night we decided to rent a ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Great Barrier Reef October 7th 2012

Well up early this morning as we had scheduled ourselves on a boat to see the Great Barrier Reef. I had also arranged to hire an underwater camera to capture some of the sights of the reef. We made sure we chose a company that only had limited passengers ie no more than 30 passengers as some boats have hundreds of passengers and I mean 100s. So we chose a company called Wavelength they are a family business and also on board is a marine biologist which helps when you have questions. So on the boat we hop and are duly given a wet suit, snorkel, mask and fins and off to the first site we go. They ask you to wear wet suits as then your suncream does not damage the reef - see good ... read more

Well been in the Australian rain forest on a tour using Daintree Safari. The tour was great but honestly is this a rain forest - I do not think so - maybe we have been travelling so long that are we being de-sensitized to some amazing things due to our seeing so many wonders around the world - I think we are so ignore my previous comments. Tour guide Nick was amazing and if you know anyone who is coming here and needs a guide Nick is your man. So picked up at 7.30am, yes I said AM! OMG we are in a chilling mode getting up this early is not on. So off in the 4x4 we go with another couple from San Francisco. We drive through a sleepy town called Mossman where on the ... read more

Well we are really chilling out in our little cottage in Port Douglas. Had to do the boring stuff yesterday such as washing and ironing. Mind you we have not seen a washing machine for weeks so it was great being able to really clean our clothes instead of having to hand wash them only. We have also booked a few things for the rest of this week. We are off to the world heritage site of Daintree Rainforest tomorrow so it is going to be a real early start for us of 07.30 - not used to this since we have been in Port Douglas I have been rocking out of bed at around 10ish - plus heaven on earth had a cup of rosie lee (that's tea if you do not understand cockney!) in ... read more

I am writing this from the airport lounge in Alice Springs with a small rucksack and a bleeding large tube with the paintings I bought!!! Well we have now joined the Australian Youth Hostel Association as it gives you a discount when you book the Greyhound Bus which we have booked now from Cairns through to Sydney. The Greyhound bus is a lot more reasonable than flying and you can hop on hop off which is great as we seem to have a plan on the places we are going to stay. Whilst flying we reflected on the Anangu (aborigines - to us Poms) people Everyone we saw from this tribe seemed to look sad and living at the lower of the economic scale - it really touched us and really brought home to us the ... read more

ALICE SPRINGS Hope everyone is ok I know, I know you have missed reading what we have been getting up to in the outback but unfortunately I could not update you as yes you guessed it we were in the outback. So here goes on the outback adventure to see Uluru (Ayres Rock to us Poms). Just to give you a bit of background on this trip first to set the scene (hey, I am getting good at this writing thingy - next I could be writing best sellers) I booked this tour over the internet and then realised it said it is mainly backpackers who go on this trip up to the age of 45 - Yes you guessed it we are a lot older than 45. So I e-mailed the tour company and explained ... read more
