After chronicling my month long trip to Oceania, three years later I return with a trip to the Western US.

I have sooo much to say, and I've been thinking of very funny things to say... but I'm exhausted and I've got another big day ahead of me, so I think I will just update to say that I'm in Wyoming and I'll be heading to Yellowstone tomorrow. I might have internet again on the way to Glacier, but all my posts might have to be done after the fact! haha! Happy travels, K... read more

Saturday, July 16th Today I left Custer State Park and headed to Spearfish Canyon. Took some pictures of the area and had a picnic lunch before heading to Wyoming to visit Devils Tower. (Note, Devils not Devil’s) There I took the hike around the base and it reminded me a lot of Uluru – First of all, huge monolith, but also that the native people have a large connection to the site. Throughout the month of June, climbers are discouraged from climbing the monument then, and there are lots of prayer ribbons and shawls along the trail. At Uluru it’s very similar, there are some places where you’re not to take photographs because of its spiritual significance, and you’re always asked not to climb it (but of course people do). So after all that, it was ... read more

Not really in Faith, but again, closest town to where I'm at. Obviously not a whole lot to update, but since I have access to internet I thought I'd make a quick update. I'm safely West River. Enjoying some nice mid-western hospitality, and getting ready for the DRA Board Meeting. Got a place to stay tonight in Custer State park and I'm starting to rethink my Harney Peak plans. It's going to be 90 degrees... I'm thinking that maybe sitting by the lake and fishing sounds like a better plan. Anyhow, meeting is starting soon, so I'll just throw up a couple pictures and sign off! -K... read more

Wednesday July 13th Traveled to a farm for the DRA BOD meeting. Took a long stop at Oacoma to check out the flooding and take a little hike. Night at the farm house was great, the homeowner had a bunch of beds for her grandkids so we were all put up in a very nice fashion. When I got there she offered me iced tea and chicken, but when I refused the chicken, a rice krispy bar was forced on me instead. I love Midwesterners. Thursday July 14th Woke up to coffee and a homemade breakfast – wonderous, again. DRA BOD meeting this morning. It ended up being kind of sad- it was my last meeting on the board. And they actually applauded when I told them I was going to grad school – unexpected and ... read more

(I'm not really in Sioux Falls, but the small town I actually live near doesn't make it on the list. ) Hey all! Very short update to get things going on here. First of all, I'm reusing my Australia/NZ blog, but I'm not sure I'd recommend reading through those. I didn't have a chance to read through them again, but I do know I'm a very different person than I was three years ago! ;) So I'll be heading to the Black Hills today, and then I have my meeting tomorrow, and after that... well I don't have much planned! My rough schedule looks something like this: July 15th – Hills July 16th – Extra day in the Hills (Spearfish canyon, Harney Peak, Custer Park, Maybe a cave) Travel to Yellowstone Park tonight (Or rather Cody, ... read more

I just have to make a bold statement right away here. I think that I'm very smelly. At first I wasn't sure if it was me, but this smell has been following me around. Therefore, I must conclude, that I'm the one with the stentch. And it's not just my feet anymore.. Anyhow. Day in Wellington. Mostly successful. Successful in the fact that I left this shitty hostel at 9:30am, and didn't return until 11:30pm. Successful in the fact I got to the 2 museums AND 2 art galleries that I wanted to go too, as well as the government buildings. But unsuccessful in finding fush n chups (NZ pronounciation) and a place to find souvieners. So, if I haven't got you something yet, you might not be getting anything. Sorry- I did try- I promise, ... read more

Alright, I've stayed in some pretty shoddy places before on this trip.. but I think I might have just stumbled into one of the worst. I know, I know, I was pretty spoiled at my last location, actually, VERY spoiled. Last night was my first night alone for the first time since I was at home. It was nice of course, but a little freaky, quiet, and weird... Today was my long bus ride from Lake Taupo to Wellington, and as soon as we got started, I just had to smile and know that this country is awesome. The bus driver announced that we'd be stopping for lunch, that if the temperature was uncomfortable to come and tell him, or if we were feeling sick to let him know etc.. and then, he was like, I ... read more

So today started out again kind of rough, I knew I had to make a decision on whether or not to take the RA job and only have 3 days at home, or stay for about a week and then go up. As of now, I have declined the position. I talked to Brittany and Laura again online, and while it was nice to talk to them, I just didn't want to stop. And lesson #3 for those keeping count, don't tell a homesick person that they need to come home right now, they agree with you, and there's nothing they can do about it. So after that conversation, I set out into the city of Rotorua for some shopping, and then had a very American afternoon to help satisfy my pangs of homesickness: A McDonalds ... read more

Don't get me wrong, I love this city, but yeah, it smells kind of like farts. (I'll explain later) So yesterday morning started kind of rough- watch out kids, there are a lot of lessons in this story. I tried to call home with the phone cards my classmates had given me in Australia. Lesson number one, Calling phone card numbers in another country counts as an international call, so pretty much they are the same price as if you just went ahead and called home.. So $24 dollars later, or 6 minutes of phone time, or 6 Vodka Cruisers later, I hadn't talked to my family much at all, except to wonder why it was costing me so much... Lesson number 2, calling home for only 6 minutes will hurt you more than help you. ... read more
