We enjoyed the Loire valley so much that we wanted to return and see some more. This time we headed a little further west to start and stopped at Chateaudun on the way. This town had a scenic walk through the town. We ate our lunch at the start of the walk, at a nice spot that overlooks the town and the Loire. Then we wandered through the narrow cobblestone streets which were very quaint and finally found the chateau. Then walked the rest of the scenic path to end up at back at our car. Next stop was Blois which is home to the Chateau Royale de Blois. This was the residence of several French kings and later, Joan of Arc went there to be blessed by the Archbishop before her quest to drive the ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris August 8th 2016

Today was amusement park day! We went to the Parc Asterix just north of Paris. It was mainly cloudy but got sunny later in the day, perfect for a day walking of around. We all had a great time. The only downside was the large number of smokers. We really are spoiled back in Ontario where you seldom even see a cigarette. There are lots of smokers in Paris and they can smoke anywhere, even in lines for rides! So, after a whole day of exposure, I think we were all feeling a little woozy (plus the effects of the rides of course). Correction from yesterday's blog - should have been Bois de Boulogne (the park in Paris we rode around)... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris August 7th 2016

This morning, Nigel and I left the kids and took off on our bikes to Clamart to sit at a Brasserie and people watch (like the French spend so much time doing). It was the hottest day we have had so far (28 degrees but no humidity) and so it was quite nice sitting out in the sun relaxing. We were astonished that the boulangerie next door had a lineup out the door and down the street! We were also amused when the brasserie staff dashed next door into the boulangerie and came out with 6 baguettes simply calling out "six" letting them know he was taking six baguettes! So, after we sat for a while, we decided that we had better see what the fuss was about so we got in line and got some ... read more

Europe » France » Centre » Chartres August 7th 2016

Friday we rode our bikes to the Foret de Clamart. We took the scenic route there (and by that I mean the long-we-got-lost route, not the prettiest route) and when we got to the forest, we could only find the hiking trails at first which were very steep, rocky and not too bike-friendly. So, back down the big hill and finally found the bike trails. These were steep too but at least they were paved and ridable. This forest was well used by people running and biking. We ate our picnic in the woods and then biked around some more before heading home. The next day was off to Chartres. This town is famous for its Cathedral (dating back to the 1100's) which is spectacular. We could see it from miles away driving in. We parked ... read more

Europe » France » Centre » Orléans August 4th 2016

Today was another road trip day. It actually rained for the better part of the drive but it stopped right as we were arriving at our first stop of the day! This was a town called Orleans and it was very quaint. The centre had a merry-go-round with two levels and a statue of Jeanne d'Arc. We ate lunch right in the centre and three of us enjoyed mussels which are in season at the moment. They were delicious. Rachel had pizza.....Anyways, we wandered around the streets for a while until we found the Jardin d'Hotel Groslot. This building is an old residence which is now used as a municipal office and the gardens there are very nice. There was a gingko bilaboa tree that was 150 years old! Orleans is at the eastern side of ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Versailles August 3rd 2016

Yesterday was a partly drizzly day (first mildly inclement weather so far!) and we did not do too much so not blog-worthy.....Today we were up early and it was still overcast and a little drizzly. But by the time we headed out at 7:30 (am) the rain had stopped and the roads were dry! So, back on the bikes and off to Versailles! It was about an hour and a half to get there (which includes lots of stop lights but shockingly no stops for map checks!). The ride was pretty good and both kids are impressing us with their ability to keep up (although we are not in big rush). We were trying to get there by 9am when it opened and we did but there is nowhere to park a bike anywhere near the ... read more

Europe » France » Upper Normandy » Dieppe August 1st 2016

What a great day! Headed off at a decent time for a 3 hour to Dieppe. The drive was very nice and scenic with a few slow downs for construction but not too bad. Arrived in Dieppe in time to wander the city centre and find a quaint restaurant to eat lunch on the patio. Me and the kids all had Croque Madame (like Croque Monsieur but with a fried egg on top and with a "Chef Specialty" sign on the menu) which was delicious (and on my list of foods I must eat while here) while Nigel tried Steak hache bleu. We all enjoyed our meals very much and the atmosphere was fun too. Then we wandered around some more until we found the pebble beach. This is the historical site where 5000 men stormed ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Fontainebleau July 31st 2016

Today we headed out to Fontainebleau by car. It was under an hour and we made our first stop at the Chateau de Fontainebleau. This is the chateau that was lived in the longest by a string of nobility spanning over 400 years, including two of the Napoleons (I and III). The chateau itself was extensive, having been expanded over the centuries several times by each resident King. Once beyond the chateau and into the grounds, there was a huge pond stocked with large carp (including one albino one), extensive gardens and several additional buildings (likely stables, living quarters for the staff, etc). Next stop was the Grand Parquet. We had expected to find a fun kids fair but instead today turned out to be the Gran Prix of steeplechase horse racing. A seriously major event ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris July 30th 2016

Today was another "Big City" day en velo (bike). We took a more cycle friendly route this time which was nice. Mainly either bike paths (our favourite) or bike lanes (shared with buses - our second favourite) and some roads with bike lanes on the side (our third favourite). Straight to Cathedral de Notre Dame which was really crowded. So, we found an area off to the side which was fairly vacant and after a bird perched on the statue above us pooped on Russell, we figured out why the area was so empty. And moved on to the Ile Saint Louis to ride around a little. This is where Rachel got pooped on (and this particular poop was so big it took a few hours to actually dry......it was the size of a loony). Then ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Issy-les-Moulineaux July 29th 2016

Today will be a short blog. Nobody was up early so we decided to have a quiet day around here. I went off to the park for a while and Nigel and the kids rode bikes to pick up a few groceries around the corner (supposedly). Two hours later they arrived home and only had baguettes! Apparently they got very turned around and Nigel lost his bearings (not like him at all) and they ended up riding up some big local mini-mountain and back down. Finally they found a familiar landmark and made it home. Only to turn back around to go to the store right down the road from us. We had an afternoon of trampoline, soccer, reading, track running, researching France, and relaxing. We should all be well charged for another outing tomorrow!... read more
