Europe » Spain » Mallorca » Palma de Mallorca By NickolaaaasApril 15th 2007nicholas k simpson Its the end of April and i have just finished a 8hr days work, polishing the "topsides" of a luxury motorboat. the back is a little stiff, the shoulders sore and the skin a little cooked. i feel like cooking my favourite pasta, my book and falling asleep. i have been in mallorca 2weeks tomorrow and have been blessed by Saint George who is looking after me on his boat and keeping my bank balance afloat with plenty of work. i am here for another 4 weeks catching up... read more
Where to start. Having left my home and new copado amigos in San Telmo, BA i passed quickly thru Salta in the north of Argentina and San Blas on the west coast of Mexico. I am now sitting in my new share house in San Diego, Cali. After nearly 8 months, a lot of bife de chorizo and even more communication problems, i am now back on english speaking soil in the land of knarly surfers y pinchy cabron mexicanos.(es una broma chavos, los quiero todoooo!) It trips me out hanging in north america, not the same feeling as when i was in disneyland mode 14 years ago. After more than 3 weeks walking down the street and hearing the accent i still feel like im an extra in a episode of the OC. The accent, ... read more
Its been ages since i had something to say or felt like writing, nearly 3 months has passed since i arrived back to Buenos Aires from my tranquilo life in El Bolson, working in hostel heaven. What a memory it will stay, such an amazing place to chill and meet locals and suck up fresh clean country air. Was such a great experience sometimes i wonder why i ever left. Back in the big smokey ciudad is definately a slap in the face and people don´t seem to have as much time for a lazy chat. This is the hardest part of starting from nothing in a new city. A small circle of friends makes finding a flat and a job definately a larger steeper hill to climb. It took sometime to find a place to ... read more
So the road turns again and after sharing just over 2 RE BUENISIMO weeks together as a foursome, team Oz splits in half. Team Shake De Lock head to the coast of Chile to catch cold sic narly olas and the Simpson brothers to hang out for two more weeks catching sweet memories for those years ahead, when we´ll be hanging out on the terrace, sharing a cerveza and laugh whilst sitting in our robot wheelchairs reliving it all. It´s funny how the travellers road bends, twists and falls into some amazing little crevices, people and places. I have found myself in El Bolson for the last 2 weeks enjoying this tiny hippy tourist town with such ease. This pueblito has such a nice energy, ambience, onda everyone ends up staying as long as their life ... read more
We said goodbye to the beaches and new surrogate family and friends of Mar Del Plata and are now amongst the mountains and lakes of Bariloche. From the east coast to the west right on the border of chile, one side of Argy to the other, 24 hours and about 1200 km travelling with a one way $60aud bus ticket. Thank you to los Bastida´s y los Mastroberti´s for inviting us into your house and into your amazing warm family arms for the whole week. We all felt so fortunate to be spoilt and surrounded by so much argy family love. "Nooo, gracias vos" I hope there is plenty more asado, helado and dance floor rendevous together. Juan Cruz and Mika my new beautiful niece and nephews I look forward to hearing your english language grow ... read more
Arrived on a bus from Buenos Aires 7.30pm new years eve to the big smile and open arms of Juancito Boludo Bastida THE MALLORCA MAESTRO. He immediately invites the four australian reps to a family asado(bbq) to kick the night off. Awaiting is a feast of traditional argy meat, salads, deserts, vino, cervezas and a whole lot of argentinian family hospitality that greets us all with a kiss and smile that immediately makes us feel at home. After gorging on the masses of meat, midnight hits, champagne flows and we move into the street to watch all the neighbourhood dads demonstrate to the small children how to set off a firework without hitting the close by houses. One dad was embarrassed a little as his failed to light a single one and grandma had to disgracefully ... read more
Well it had been nearly a whole year since i saw my lil big bro and it didn´t exactly happen the way i expected. Walked into the kitchen of the hostal friday morning(well 1pm, was a large night) small hangover in tow, when i hear a familiar line from behind me "hey bro, whats up" hugs and smiles later and its like you only just saw each other yesterday. Great feeling to have the big guy with me. Best thing about meeting family overseas is the memories you capture together to talk about and relive for the rest of our lives. And did we catch a good one on Sunday. Me and Dan started the day late with a stroll along the cobbled stones streets of the San Telmo sunday markets. Charlie chaplin doing his waddle ... read more
The thing about travelling alone is you have plenty of time to question and think about every decision, past, present and future you make. I have had mucho tiempo to think about whether i have made the right choice to move to an alien speaking country that is trying to climb its way out of an economic crisis. My spanish works to get me what i want to survive, to meet people, to have random conversations and throw a cheeky wisecrack at my new locale grocer, Juan. However at other times, when trying to join in a discussion on the work restrictions for south americans or the history of Peru whilst trying to understand the different accents coming from Colombianos, Peruanos and Argentianos, I really struggle to stay happy and interested and find it very frustrating ... read more
So just got back to Santiago from my 3 day adventure in Pucon, 10 hour bus ride south of Santiago. the whole aim of the trip was to climb an active Volcano and get out and see a bit of Chile´s bonito countryside. unfortunately and probably to mums satisfaction, the weather was too wet to climb. But for those headed to the south of Chile oneday Pucon is a cute little town with plenty of cool stuff to do. I arrived by bus at around 8 am and started solo wandering thru rain into town to find a hostel, food, coffee and cigarette. (a backpackers daily chores) Turned out the town didn´t open until 10 am. killed a bit of timing reflecting on life, thinking where my bro would be right this instant and how my ... read more
Que pasa dIARY! i´ve arrived in Santiago! yeeeaaarrhh, The travel excitement FINALLY hit me when i was looking out the window of the plane, waiting to see the first sight of this huge continent that i will call home for the next year.(see photo, i was reeeeaaaalllly excited right then ;·) Hit the airport and managed to spit some spanish at the hoards of taxi/shuttle/bus drivers all vying for my Pesos the moment i step out of customs, like bee´s to the honey. After a 20 hour journey it was a nice little welcoming. Turns out the guy i picked, was actually pretending he knew where i was staying. no pasa nada, we found it pretty easily, it´s on the main square of the city, Plaza de Armas. All worth it though, what a square and ... read more
