Just a few trips here and there to maintain our sanity from now on - but you never know - we might take off again for an extended break!

Europe » France » Brittany » Benodet August 31st 2015

After an fairly easy ride, partly through the night, down to Benodet, we arrived to warmish weather and our square piece of grass/home for the next 12 nights. The campsite 'Camping du Letty' offered everything we needed and reminded me so much of when I went camping with my family throughout my childhood - it was quite a nostalgic holiday. We set up home next to some friendly Dutch and opposite some friendly Germans. Although we definitely did not have the gear that some people have (satellite dishes, rotary washing lines, speed boats) it was homely enough. The weather was a bit iffy so quite a few days we were dodging the rain by visiting some of the surrounding places of interest. One afternoon we went to a town called Audierne which although quite quaint did ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Venice March 12th 2015

After the freezing cold weather in Monterrey we couldn't wait to get to the heat of Florida and we were not disappointed. Just two planes would get us there this time - but coupled with a hangover and minimal sleep from the wedding the journey was long. We made our way at midnight to Bre, Simon and Maddie's pad who live in Venice on the east coast of Florida and tiptoed into a nice cosy room to wake up to the Florida sunshine - the hunt for the shorts was the first job before breakfast! Bre and Simon live on one of the many gated developments in Florida which affords super lovely accommodation overlooking a lake festooned with wildlife and a shared pool that would not look out of place in a 5 star hotel. We ... read more

North America » Mexico » Tamaulipas » Tampico March 5th 2015

When the invitation to Hector (our Hector's namesake) and Melissa's wedding came it was an easy decision to say yes we're coming! We met Hector in Nepal about 8 years ago and this was the perfect excuse to go and visit. The trip was unforgettable and for that we say a huge thank you to Hector and his family and friends for making us feel so welcome and really laying on the red carpet treatment! The practicalities of getting to Tampico are a little challenging - 27 hours journey time, 3 flights and fortunately only one melt down - (Heidi in Mexican customs as she didn't press the button in the elevator)! Actually, the kids were pretty good on the flights, and we arrived fairly fresh to our first hotel in Tampico - with Hector checking ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Cornwall » Padstow October 17th 2014

A cheeky week in Cornwall long after the summer holidays actually worked out well. Nice quiet holiday let with pool onsite and a short walk to the beach. No hordes of tourists, and inspite of the time of year we had great weather ! So good that we went swimming in the sea! Lots of fun had by all and a great reminder of how amazing Cornwall is, and also how close it is too!... read more

Europe » Monaco July 30th 2014

A short break to the South of France for Jon and Charlottes Wedding (last summer) - looking back at the pictures now brings back memories of a great day! Monaco proved to be the best post wedding day hangover cure - we pretty much walked the entire grand prix circuit, had a delicious lunch and a quick dip before heading back to the airport.... cracking short break catching up with old friends! Pictures say it all really............. read more

Europe » Spain » Balearic Islands » Majorca » Cala Millor May 11th 2014

Catching up on Blogs - moreover a record for H&H for the future - and realised we had missed this one from last summer! Headed out there a bit too early this time around - the weather was nice, but swimming pools and sea hadn't quite warmed up! A nice little break, but learnt a bit about holidays with kids. All inclusive deals are great - but the novelty wears off after a few days (we were there for 10)! Eating is a huge part of a holiday, and without the need to go to restaurants or cook there seems to be something missing! Kids clubs are good - but they need to be at the same time - we spent most of our time working out when to drop off and pick up (H&H ages ... read more

Europe » Spain » Asturias November 24th 2013

Long in the making - this weekend was inspired by tales of fabulous food, scenery, and weather (in the summer) by great friends Nick and Ceci - we were not disappointed! The usual early start commensurate with cheap flights (£40 return!) saw us meeting Lynny and Graham (travelling companions through Argentina in 2006) on a cold and dreary Friday at Stanstead. A trouble free flight, you get free speedy boarding with kids (and seat allocation stops the usual bun fight), saw us arriving in good time to make a full day of it in Asturias. Processing at the little airport was fairly straightforward - Heidi managed to get herself separated from the rest of us by running thorough automatic doors - which then promptly closed behind her and caused much laughter in the immigration queue - ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Walloon Brabant » Waterloo September 24th 2013

We were sent on our way early Tuesday morning last week by none other than David Cameron and arrived in Waterloo on Thursday evening – received by the British Ambassador – with plenty of pomp and ceremony along the way. It was a real challenge – and by lunchtime on day 1 I had cycled further than ever before in one go (40 miles)! The total distance I covered over the 3 days was 255 miles. An average of 85 miles per day and overall average speed of around 14mph. 18 hours were spent in the saddle (and don’t I know it). My top speed was 39.4 mph (down a very steep hill in Kent). I had 3 punctures on day 1, 1 on day 2, and was incident free from then on. I fell off ... read more

Europe » France » Brittany » Guern August 10th 2013

After a silly 4am start, we arrived in Calais at 9am to wait for Mike (Nick's Dad), Lucy (Nick's sister) and James (Nick's sister's husband), we eventually caught up with them on the motorway hard shoulder after Mike had tried to go round the roundabout the wrong way - whoops! Partially because I didn't know my right from my left!!!!! Having chosen 'car park Saturday' as the day to travel (the worst weekend in France to travel hence the motorways being called a car park) it was no surprise we spent a good 2+ hours in traffic jams. We got to our gite in time to get to the local village, Guemene-Sur-Scorff, for dinner in a gorgeous little restaurant run by an English couple, it was a traditional French affair with Fish and Chips for me! ... read more

Europe » Spain » Balearic Islands » Majorca » Cala d'Or June 15th 2013

Within the space of a month we are now on our third little break (we are not bragging even though it may seem that way!) - this one the official summer holiday (part 1). Enforced by leave running out at the end of June (poor us, I hear you say!). Actually, it was a great time to go away - the benefit from being outside of the peak holiday period - paying for 3 now makes a bit of a difference! The selection criteria for this holiday was as follows: Somewhere close - within a few hours flying Somewhere warm Somewhere you can fly to from Luton (our local airport) Somewhere with a pool, easy walking distance to restaurants, and family friendly After plenty of searching we settled on Majorca - Cala D'Or - annoyingly for ... read more
