It's very hard to describe Napoli... there seems to be at least two faces of this very historic city.... Etruscans, Greeks, Romans ... Renaissance Dukedoms,Spanish and French Bourbon kings and the Catholic Church have all had a hand in its development. With Mount Vesuvius towering over the Bay of Naples we all know about the earthquakes in the region and the most famous eruption of 79 AD which destroyed Pompei and Ercolano (Herculaneum) and to some extent it feels like the city is living dangerously on the edge. But first of all our journey from Rome to Naples was by train. Tip No 1 ..it's very easy to book a ticket online with Trenitalia ..seats were reserved and we download our e ticket. We weren't sure if it had to be printed but no we were ... read more

One of the joys of travelling is meeting lovely, kind people who then become your friends. So over the years as I have travelled, exchanging my home and hospitality, I am lucky to have collected several wonderful friends who now have become travel companions. And so it was that Colleen and Peter from Albany, Western Australia invited me to join them on their trip to Italy. No day recuperating from the long flight from Oz ...they were up and running with me and off we all went wandering down our street through the local market marvelling at tubs of artichokes, cheeses and salami, and such beautiful flowers, then through St Peteres Square where the Maundy Thursday Mass was being broadcast onto big screens. After a stop for coffee and croissants it was on past Castel San ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome April 12th 2017

Some time back I watched 'I Claudius ' and many of the statues and names I was hearing yesterday seem so familiar. First on the agenda was a guided tour of the Vatican museums and Sistine Chapel. The guide was amazing and had so much information to give us but there was a lot of hanging about to get in even though we had skip- the- line tickets... but with 25,000 visitors each day I suppose there's not much you can do. My phone was not taking photos ( memory full!!) and not photos not allowed in the Sistine Chapel so nothing to show for that! But we were able to stay in there about 15 mins and thanks Susan for the tip ...I had my binocs so got some up close of the details on ... read more

Europe April 10th 2017

Yes I have been reading Mary Beard and swotting up before I got here, however I only got to 63 BC and the e-book had to go back to the library . SPQR is dotted about the city, even on the drain covers 'The Senate and People of Rome ' and there it is all the history laid out in this magnificent grand city. This is my first visit and I am awed at the grandeur and that's just in these first few hours on the HOHO bus loop around. everything is so much bigger and there is so much of it ... I really don't know what to do next!! Getting here was easy on the train from Le Marche (15 € for 2 h 30 min journey ) .. the train carriages were modern ... read more

Europe » Italy » Marche » San Severino Marche April 9th 2017

Looking back my last blog was 2015 . It may seem that I haven't been travelling but not true ... in 2016 My travels toook me to visit friends and family in Dubai, Malta and Sweden ... places which I love but were not new to me so I was very lazy and didn't do blogs!! But here I am and back to travel to pastures new this year. In January I was in Dubai and February- March had a trip to Spain and now accompanied by Beenvy and the runaway mouse it is my first week in Italy. Le Marche is an area I have not been to before and I don't think gets as many tourists as Tuscany or Umbria . It is a beautiful region , lush and green hills and in the ... read more

North America » United States » Colorado October 17th 2015

We were on our way to Denver and were told to stop off at Fairplay where there South Park outdoor museum is located... Thanks Velma for the tip!! What a great place, it takes you back to the 19th century when the town here was bustling with folk searching for gold. You can tramp along the wooden walkways , hitch up your horse ( if you have one) to the posts peer into the stagecoach stables, the schoolhouse , the drugstore with its soda fountain , the saloon and imagine what it would be like to live in here. Great stuff ... I love outdoor museums , they give you a feel of what life was like. And it's good to,know that many of the artefacts inside the houses and buildings were donated by local residents. ... read more

There I was rummaging around in my trusty ruckspack and thought what's this ??? And pulled out my little mouse which as you remember I thought had run away with the squirrels in Bryce , so obviously he got caught in the zip and pulled off and fell into the rucksack and he hadn't abandoned me ... Beeny was very pleased to have his little companion back!! And so back on the road again into Colorado we go on to Mesa Verde - yes mesa is table and verde is green in Spanish but somehow I hadn't imagined that this would be a huge Mesa covered in vegetation ... Trees , shrubs green stuff . We had got so used to seeing bare rock scenery that this was a surprise . Mesa Verde is the place ... read more

Last time I was here I didn't get to Dead Horse Point so it was a "must do" this time. So following in the footsteps of Thelma and Louise ... Their last scene as they go over the Canyon was filmed here...but we had no intentions of following them that far ? So it is as all our days have been absolutely mind blowing as we drive on the tops of the Mesas and then reach overlooks to see canyons stretching far into the distance with glimpses of the Green Rover or the Colorado River below. And how we marvelled at the steep steep gravel tracks/ roads which went down into the canyons ... Would need a land rover or jeep for them and perhaps a nice cowboy to drive us in case we had any ... read more

I hope it doesn't get too boring seeing more pictures of Arches but it's a few years since I was here and I am still awed by the grandeur and for Suzanne this is her first time here. Over the past couple of years the number of visitors to Arches has greatly increased and they are having some probless with the traffic in the park ... It is really too vast for a shuttle system they say but they are working on solutions. Anyway it was a surprise to find a long queue of cars just waiting to get into the park but after about 15 mins we were in and once we got driving around we were lucky to find a parking space at each of the points where we wanted to take a hike. ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Capitol Reef October 3rd 2015

If you are staying or passing though Torrey eat at Cafe Diablo, we had great food sitting out on the patio under the stars ... Such an enormous portion of pecan breaded chicken ( back in England chicken breasts are never that big ) that we had it for picnic next day. Capitol Reef National Park was another day of surprises with fantastic overlooks along canyons, massive cliffs and white rock domes and then nestling in a canyon the area of Fruita along by the Fremont River , where some enterprising pioneers built a homestead and found they could grow fruit and sustain life in this remote region. You can actually pick fruit yourself it is harvest time .... This is the only historic orchard maintained by the NPS and there are more than 3000 trees, ... read more
