The kindness of the Cambodian people was apparent when Jenny and I first arrived at Phnom Pen airport ... our pick up had not arrived and as we stood there a guide from another company noticed us maybe looking a bit “ lost ” and he then phoned and arranged a driver to pick us up .... problem solved !! Having lost a night sleep on the journey we had a couple of hours kip then we were off. The hotel was in a great location , the Mighty Mekong river at the end of the road, the old market at the other end and Palaces and temples 5 mins walk. Hot and humid, we were also very happy to think that after our walkabouts we could have a cooling dip in the pool or sit ... read more

At SInt Truiden It's a few weeks ago that I stayed in Belgium on my way back home from Maastricht in Nederlands. It was only a 45 minute drive to the small town of Sint Truiden where I was to stay with Frans and Sonja ( another lot of home exchange friends). This was the first time we had met although they have stayed in my house twIce. What a great welcome I had and what a fabulous home they had, I felt like I was a luxury boutique hotel. (Home exchange can throw up some amazing places). Formerly a church and monastery had been built here in 1745 and when Napoleon went rampaging though the country he was set on destroying church property so many places were sold off . This was one of them ... read more

Quite a change of scene ....from Alaska to Maastricht in the Netherlands ??. I was only home 2 days and then packed the bags into the car and off on the ferry across the Channel. it was a bit of a crisis in those 2 days with me coming home to a power cut to my house , so guys digging holes in my driveway and me with torches and candles and not much sleep - in addition to jet lag . But it was fixed and I got away . It's not the best time to be driving round the Brussels Ring Road on a Friday afternoon in July but I made it to Maastricht and my house exchange family. They were to leave the next morning after showing me round the house and settling ... read more

Weren't we so lucky to have the 3 best days for sunny weather when we drove to Denali National Park. The mountain Denali ( its Native Alaskan name "The High One " ) or as previously named Mount McKinley is rarely seen by visitors as it is usually wreathed in cloud. About 1 in 3 get to see it but there is was looming ahead of us like a huge iceberg on the road as we drove up North. In fact we were so surprised that we missed the turn outs so never go a photo so you have to take my word for it ! Denali is the tallest mountain in the USA at 20,310 ft , and since it starts from a lower base level,it is said to be taller than Everest. Back in ... read more

Weather wise it hasn't been bright sunny skies , but hey ho we make the best of it and we have seen such dramatic skies and landscapes and marvelled at the conditions that the native people and Alaskan pioneers have coped so resourcefully and we have no idea what it would be like in winter. Our journey for 3 days took us down the Kenai peninsula to Seward and Homer , we almost bumped into a cow moose munching grass at the side of the road - I was just going to say to Ros " there's a horse " when we both said ? " it's a moose ". We took a 3.5 hour boat trip and you will see from the photos it was rainy and cloudy but that didn't matter I almost lost ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Anchorage July 1st 2017

On a day when the sun peeps through the clouds in Anchorage you get out and walk the streets which are lined with beautiful flowering baskets , you potter about the town garden squares and admire the bursts of colour of the most massive flowers.... they are all 5 times bigger here than in U.K. Downtown Anchorage has the feel of a small town with very few high rise buildings - maybe that's something to do with earthquakes and I am praying that another one doesn't happen while I am here !!!! Once in a lifetime is enough for me. It is small enough to wander in the central area , and gaze with Captain Cook across the water of Cook Straight to the mountains beyond. However on the days when rain and dark clouds beckon ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Eagle River June 28th 2017

Here I am managing to keep jet lag at bay by writing a few lines and keep myself awake. Rosalind and I had a wonderful journey here to Alaska yesterday, flying from Gatwick to Reykjavik and further connections in Seattle to Anchorage. Keflavik airport was very busy, as it is now quite a big hub for North American flights , and very expensive as Ros found out when she picked up a couple of snacks...... $9 for a bag of nuts and a flapjack bar almost sent her into a spin ... so the flapjack went back !! Then we had the excitement of her name being called over the tannoy system and off we toddled to the Info Desk to be told she had been specially selected by US Immigration for a security check . ... read more

Europe » Italy » Sicily » Palermo May 1st 2017

Our last train journey together to Palermo where we said good bye to Colleen and Peter and off they went on the next leg of their journey to Sardinia. Judi, Adrian and I had booked into Xenia BnB not far from the station and it proved to be a gem of a place.. just off the main street down a little alley. It was in a very old building but had been very well restored and modernised and we had a wonderful welcome from Guisy who plied us with juice and cannoli and sat down with the map to explain where we were and what we should see. Not long after we were out on the streets and exploring ...there is so much to see there and one day would not do it justice but we ... read more

Europe » Italy » Sicily » Cefalù April 28th 2017

The Normans did not only conquer Britain in 1066 but were as far south as Sicily in the 12 Century. KIng Roger ll crops up everywhere here and seems to have been a great builder ... the World Heritage has recognised religious and civic sites in Cefalu , Palermo and Monreale as special in that there are amalgamations of religions of Western, Byzantine and Islamic cultures. In addition Cefalu is a lovely seaside town with narrow street thronged with locals and tourists. Cafes and restaurants abound and there are little shops selling everything from Italian leather handbags and ceramics to sundried tomatoes and pesto! Tucked away down one street is a mediaeval laundry site where women would gather and do their washing as well as have a good old chat I am sure !! The water ... read more

You can do nothing but immerse yourself in ancient history are on the island of Sicily. TIPS ABOUT THE FERRY ..First we had to get ourselves on the overnight ferry from Napoli to Catania. So we had a bit of scouting around during the day and found that the ticket office for our ferry TT LIne was straight down Via Marchese Campodisola from the Piazza Giovanni Bovio. We picked up the the tickets and were told to come back to the gate about 7 pm ... which was great because the ferry left at 9.30 and we didn't want to have too much hanging around all day and in the evening. I am giving this tip as there are not too many signs around and it could be a bit confusing. There are ferries going to ... read more
