On Saturday morning we were up early and down to breakfast at 7am.We surprised the staff who weren’t quite ready for us. We checked out and left the hotel about 7-45am and followed signs to Heathrow and eventually to the Rental Car return place. We dropped off the car at Avis and then took the shuttle to Terminal 4 at Heathrow. We were early so had a coffee while we waited for the check in to open and then dropped our bags and headed for security and Passport control. All of this moved pretty swiftly so we had a couple of hours to wait for our flight. We connected to the WiFi and caught up on emails etc, Our Aeroflot flight was due to leave at 11-50am and we boarded early . It was packed with ... read more

On Thursday morning we decided to spend he morning checking out Pembroke Castle. This imposing complex has been a fortress since the 12th Century and is now a major attraction of the town. We left our car parked behind the hotel and walked up the street and entered just after opening time , at 9-30am.The gatehouse is impressive and still intact and then in the clearing in the centre of the walls there is a huge map of Wales spread out in colourful style with the main Welsh castles marked on it. We went into the first tower, Here on the wall, projections and audio tell the story of different owners and stages in the life of the castle. These are well done and very informative. We climbed up to the various floors of the tower. Each ... read more

We set off from Laugharne after a great breakfast at Brown’s. I had Eggs Benedict while Fletcher had smoked salmon scrambled eggs. Yummy. We said farewell to Jude and Milly and then Fletcher discovered he had left a wallet containing American dollars and other denominations of cash back in our hotel room in Swansea. So, it was on the road and a rapid commute to there. Fortunately, when we got back to The Grand Hotel, someone had found it and it was in their safe, Phew!!! We then set off to drive to St David’s. We had seen this on one of the Antiques Roadtrips programs and it looked fascinating. The road took us through Haverfordwest and on to the westernmost part of Wales. The scenery along the coast was striking and the drive was relatively ... read more

My main reason for visiting south Wales was to immerse myself in the places important in the life of Dylan Thomas. On Monday morning, after a tasty breakfast near our hotel at Buon-Appetito, we walked back down Wind St and arrived at The Dylan Thomas Centre just after it opened at 10-30am. This contains an exhibition arranged around a chronoogical retelling of Dylan's short life. It is free to go in and contains many artefacts of his life. We spent over an hour here. Fletcher was pleased to discover that Dylan had won prizes for the handicap mile and cross-country running at his school, Swansea Grammar. We were able to listen to recordings made by Thomas himself, reading his own poems. In his youth he was a member of the Little Theatre in Swansea and acted ... read more

We had had 3 great days in London and it was now time to move on to the next part of our journey. Everyone whom I taught or who knows me well, knows of my love of the poetry of Dylan Thomas. His language and imagery lives on forever. I have not been to south Wales and especially Swansea and Laughaurne which were his birthplace and home so that's where we headed. We took a cab to Paddington Station, having bought our tickets the day before. Earlier we had breakfasted at Cafe Madeira. The train was scheduled for 10-30 and it was only at 10-20 that the board told us to go to Platform 2. There was a huge rush towards that platform and we walked to the fourth carriage and got on. It was packed. ... read more

Our last full day in London was a pottering sort of one. I slept in and we left the hotel about 10am. We had two major goals in mind. Firstly, to purchase our tickets for Sunday's train journey to Swansea and then to revisit the Courtauld Gallery to see their collection of Impressionists. For the first we went to Victoria station but were dismayed by the very long queues there. Having checked out the W.H.Smith store there (and found the fourth in a series of books I have been reading which I did not know existed) we went across the road to a pub called The Shakespeare for brunch. I thought this most appropriate! While we devoured our egg and bacon sandwich and scrambled eggs we discussed where to next. We decided to go to Charing ... read more

Our second day in London was very enjoyable. We left the hotel about 9am and walked east along the embankment and found a local cafe to have a croissant and coffee for breakfast, We were heading to the iconic The Oval which is in walking distance from our hotel. I had booked a tour yesterday online and we were very excited about seeing this ground after which our own Adelaide Oval was named. It ws already warm and sunny and while having breakfast we watched on TV the huge crowds of protesters with their Trump baby balloon getting ready to march against his visit. We walked along Hartleyford Road aand arrrived at the John Edrich gate an hour early. Easy to underestimate distances!! So we went on and explored Kennington Park which is where the original ... read more

We have been wanting to travel the Trans-Siberian railway for over 30 years. Each time we were going to Moscow we tried to add it on but the dates did not fall into place. So this year, as we both celebrate our70ths and in October, our 50th Wedding Anniversary, we decided a trip would be a great present to us. Now, whenever we are coming to Europe we always try to go to London first as we never tire of this great city. Our plans also extended to going to South Wales so I can visit my favourite poet, Dylan Thomas, birthplace and country. We left Adelaide on Wednesday, 11th, from Adelaide airport and had a 3 hour flight to Perth. Here, after a short wait in the Qantas Club, during which we caught up with ... read more

Monday morning dawned bright and clear. After breakfast Fletcher and I decided to try some kayaking. Once we worked out how to get into the boats we were off and enjoyed the peacefulness of the lagoon. I soon worked out how to paddle and we headed to the larger island and meandered around the lagoon for a while. We saw one large orange coloured fish but had to keep a look out for rocks as the water is quite shallow and I got stuck once or twice. After that effort we rested for a while. The family decided to hire paddle boards and try their skills at stand up paddle boarding. We walked with them, well along the beach to the hire place. The younger boys had already learnt this skill but the little girls wanted ... read more

Saturday morning it was bright and sunny. We all met by the cars at 10am and headed into Avarua for the markets. These are held every Saturday and are a bustling place with plenty of tourists and locals, and a mixture of souvenir and food stalls. As usual the local Cultural Group was putting on a show with young dancers doing the traditional dances to the beat of the drums. We wandered around here for about an hour and a half and then all recovened at Trader Jack’s for lunch. This is an iconic Cook Island restaurant. It overlooks the harbour at Avarua and has been hit by 3 different cyclones since 1986 when it was established. Now they can no longer get it insured so if a cyclone approaches they take out all the glass ... read more
