Summer In Maine I returned to Maine in mid-June, and immediately put all of my energy into the music scene here. I went to several open mic nights, and made some contacts and began to line up gigs as a solo performer. But I ran into a friend that I had made before going traveling who sings, and she was looking to get some music going. We ended up forming a duo, and began gigging as "On Deck Shenanigans." So, I am gigging as a solo performer, but also in a duo. My buddy Dane has been coming to the gigs, and playing percussion. It's all coming together. As it stands now, I plan to stay in Maine for the summer, but am making arrangements for my winter spot. Not sure where I will end up, ... read more

Panama to California I successfully got from Bocas Del Toro, Panama, to Los Angeles, California with bare feet. I even had to mess around in Florida because once I landed I had another 12 hours to wait for my next flight. So, I took a train from Ft. Lauderdale to Miami, walked around the city for a while and bought a new laptop (previous one stolen in Panama) with bare feet the whole time. Kind of funny... I got to LA and Matt (brother) picked me up at the airport. He had gotten a sweet job at this studio, so we camped out in one of the rooms (in a studio that Stevie Nicks used to record in). A few of our song got recorded while I was there, and it was nice to be back ... read more

Natural Mystic & White Chocolate The last couple months that I spent in Panama included growing relationships with the people of Bocas Del Toro. Around Christmas time I met a talented guitarist from Philadelphia, Andrew, and we created a band called "White Chocolate". Almost immediately, we began to line up gigs and we quickly became the best act around. Most of the popular bars and venues around town let us play, and were able to connect with a lot of people around town. White Chocolate sort of became a face of Bocas... The Natural Mystic boys let "White Chocolate" live at the restaurant for playing music as payment, so the last weeks in Bocas, Andrew and I lived there and played gigs almost every day at other businesses around town; sometimes two a day. It got ... read more

Natural Mystic For the past 6 weeks I have been spending most of my time at a cafe called Natural Mystic. It is a Hookah Lounge/Cafe that is on the main strip in bocas del toro that serves vegeterian eats with a Turkish feel, such as Hummus, Falafel & Baba Ganoush. I met the two owners, Alex and Dave a while back before their official opening and began helping them with the finishing touches on the place. They basically built the cafe from scratch, and the outcome is pretty sweet. When they opened a couple weeks ago they almost immediately became the most talked about place in town. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the motto is "Good Vibes". This town is quite small, and this type of food is popular because it is hard ... read more

Bocas Del Toro Bocas Del Toro is easily one of the best places I have been in my life. It is a small town that is on Isla Colon near the Costa Rican border on the Caribbean side. The main street is only about a km long, and it is infested with shops, stores, bars and hostels. Funny, when I was organizing my week here from a distance, I was worried about where I would stay, what the living envirnment would be like, and whether or not it would be adaptable. Well, it was easily adaptable. Hostel Calipso was easy to find (kind of hard to not know where places are here because it’s such a small town) and I was able to meet up with some friends I made in Panama City. I have truly ... read more

1st Day - August 31st The first day is almost over, and I thought I would comment on a few things while they are all still fresh in my mind. When I first started walking around today, getting a feel for the city, I was unaware that by the end of the day I would be a professional at waving off cab drivers. The first 1000 times a cab driver beeped at me I assumed that it was someone else they were beeping at, but I guess that I just naturally have a look like I'm expecting something because all day I have been waving off cab drivers. They pull right up on the street and honk until you give them a sign that you do not need a ride. Funny. Dirty is the second thing ... read more

California On Wednesday, August 18th, my good friend Dane and I flew to Los Angeles to spend some time with Matt and record some music. Matt had met a few people in the weeks prior, and was able to get some studio time to do some recording with a producer. Although it was a week long of being homeless, sleeping on beaches, and ( for me personally) the overwhelming stresses of the other life events hiding in my subconscience, the trip was still enjoyable and was a break from the ordinary. After the week was completed, we ended up with 4 excellent recordings, that Matt is currently shopping around in the LA area. New Jersey When I returned from California, I returned with new things on my mind; The Next Trip!! The fact is, the California ... read more

Philadelphia The next day while Wes was at work, we spent the afternoon in Philadelphia. After visiting NYC the day before, Philadelphia seemed a lot more peaceful. We were able to drive directly into the city and park, using a parking meter. Not much time went by before Sandra found a store where she did a bit of shopping. Afterward we walked a bit more, before stopping to get some lunch at a Quiznos. Lucky for us, the weather was good the whole weekend. We were a little sore from all of the walking, but other than that, it was quite comfortable. Both of us really enjoyed Philadelphia, more than New York City. Being one of the oldest cities in America, there were many old buildings in Philadelphia, and the city itself had a good style. ... read more

Two days and 1000 miles This past weekend, Sandra and I took a trip down to the New York / New Jersey area. She had come to Maine for three weeks, before her school in Germany starts. All of her life, New York City was her dream destination. I guess after watching american movies her whole life, and New York City being the most populated american city, she wanted to see it with her own two eyes. Also, neither of us had been there to see ground zero, and we thought that this fact would make an NYC trip worthy. Wes came back from California almost directly after I did in the beginning of the year, so he is living in New Jersey right near philadelphia. I called to ask him if we could stay with ... read more

One of the greatest reggae bands ever is 'The Black Seeds'. They're from New Zealand, and I never got a chance to see them while I was over there. Lucky for me they did an american tour and played in South Burlington while Sandra was visiting from Germany. It was a great show and well worth the 5 hour drive. Katie (sister) accompanied us out there, and Sandra and I were able to meet up with one of our friends from New Zealand, Jenny, and we got to meet her baby, Rae. To top it off, at the end of the night we were able to hang out with the band and party a little bit. It was good fun...if you haven't heard of this band I suggest checking them out...... read more
