Timmy the Sherpa woke at 5am and lay in bed watching the beautiful sunrise. At 5.15am Timmy decided it was time to get up and begin the preparations for the Five to set off for Workington to begin their trip. Cheese was grated specially for George and other goodies packed away in the cool box to ensure everyone was fed and adequately watered along the way. Julian and George fitted the bike to the car rack and we set off at 9am to collect Anne and Dick. At Anne’s Julian spent much time fixing the bikes safely to the rack and eventually after much debate (mainly between Julian and George) we set off at 1015. The five were excited about the adventure that lay ahead. Julian had warned Timmy that he had to concentrate on driving ... read more

The Famous Five are four decidedly upper-class middle aged adventurers with a mongrel Sherpa who go to Philosophy together and take part other similar antics in the city of Cambridge. They want nothing more than to have a great time strolling and biking around the countryside having picnics, discussing the meaning of life, and generally having jolly good fun. Unlike the Secret Seven and the Five Find-Outers, the Famous Five get about a bit—usually to places like The Kingston Pub, Grantchester, Punting, the countryside and the like. The most remarkable thing about them is possibly that they're allowed to go all over the country on their own despite being aged between thirty eight and fifty six!! We like to adopt a theme for our team when cycling and this year we are going to masquerade as ... read more

Out and about in the rain Bonjour mes amies et families. Well, we continue to enjoy ourselves despite seeing the most rain in the past five days that we have seen in the past 10 years when visiting France! It has been hard to believe at times that we are in Brittany and not somewhere where they have monsoon. This very lovely area of Brittany is called Cornouaille, and it is representative of our own lovely Cornwall, the difference being the lack of crowds and free parking wherever you go. The French do not seem to want to rip you off - unlike at home where the minute you stop you are either being photographed by a traffic warden or charged fiver for the pleasure. Parking here is in pleasant car parks with plenty of ... read more

Bonjour Bloggers, Well it is hard to believe that we have been away from home for a week now, how time flies when you are having fun. The weather has not been so clement on this trip and yesterday and today we have had a lot of rain. However, it is beautiful to see the storms gathering and rolling across the horizon. I have attached some photos to this blog for your perusal. We are having our usual good time on the farm. Our hosts, as always, making us feel so welcome and at home. The dogs have again adopted us and have moved in with us whenever they can get away with sneaking in. Although, Ian thought it was a bit much last night when Orkney the spaniel decided to get in bed with ... read more

The holiday begins We set off at 7am to catch the ferry from Dover to Boulogne. We now travel with Speedferries. It takes 50 mins to cross and is really cheap. A great service. If you buy the Supervouchers you can travel at any time and it costs £62 return well worth it. We arrived in Boulogne at about 1pm French time stopped for bread and were then on our way. The roads in France are superb forget M25 snarl ups they don’t seem to exist here. Apart from our regular picnic breaks at the Aires which are about every 15 miles on all motorways we did not stop until we reached Mont St Michel. Mont St Michel is a world heritage site and somewhere we have always wanted to visit. Believe us it was ... read more

Untitled Bonjour Friends & Family, Monsieur et Madame welcome you to our blog of our trip to Brittany, France June 2007. We have spent many a happy hour boring you all with our tales and photos of the beautiful Kersalic where we stay when we visit this lovely part of France (although every part of France is fabulous in our opinion); so this time we thought we would go one better and take you along with us. You can listen to our tales as they unfold and look at our photos and videos in small bites, rather than being forced to watch them when we invite you for dinner, or capture your attention under some other guise. Don't forget to look at the map which shows you the route we take. This time we are going ... read more
