The jungle at last! Honestly, I must have lived in a jungle in a previous life because I just love these places. I was raining from the moment we arrived. And not just any rain... it was bucketing down non stop. But, it was lovely and humid and warm. We got to our lodge in time for dinner and to listen to the band. The mood was a little sober as Natalie had just lost all her important stuff in the theft... passport, cash, travelers cheques... the works. The next day she spent with our tour leader at the local police station and at the internet cafe arranging a new passport, travelers cheques, insurance stuff, etc. It was all done, so by the end of the day she was a happy camper again. The rest of ... read more

Day 3 of San Cristobal saw us taking a trip out to Sumidero Canyon. Pretty, but I could have done with a restful morning hanging around town instead. We had to drive through thick cloud to get there and back. It was a little wierd as in San Cristobal the weather was fine, but not hot. On the other side, Sumidero Canyon, it was hot and humid. And in the middle was cold cloud forrest. That afternoon we took a 5 hour bus ride to Palenque. It was a squishy bus, so I felt uncomfortable most of the way. One of the girls on the trip had her daypack stollen on that trip as well. She had it at her feet, however, it must have slipped forward under the seat in front of her and got ... read more

The night bus from Oaxaca was not the best bus ride I have ever had. The bus was pretty basic, unlike the plush nigh busses one gets in Peru. And the road was definately windy. I took 2 of my wonderful antinausia tablets and did not feel at all ill. However, I had hoped that the pills would knock me out as they normally do... nope. I was wide awake. I did manage to doze off around 3.00am once the road had straightened out. I had originally planned to just chill out at the hotel and do my own thing around town following the bus ride, but, a hot shower can perk one right up, so instead I went with some of the others to visit a village. The village of Chamula is about 30 minutes ... read more

Oaxaca - Another lovely Colonial town! We arrived late in the evening and rushed straight to the city square to get a quick orientation and some dinner. The town square was filled with people and music and, of course, the swarm of people trying to sell us their arts and crafts. As we headed back to our hotel we noticed a procession coming down the street. It was from the Cathedral - fireworks, floats, bands, women in national dress with baskets of flowers on their heads, and people throwing lollies out to the crowds on the streets. People said to join them, so we did. We wandered the streets until 11.00pm and decided to ´drop out´of the procession once we found out that it was going to go on until 1.00am. After a day of hiking ... read more

Puebla. What a lovely lovely town. It reminds me of the lovely Colonial towns of South America and a little of Antigua in Guatemala. It´s a much quieter spot than Mexico City and has retained it´s beautiful Spanish architecture. People move at a much slower pace, there is far less traffic (Mexico City was a bit mental with traffic), and it´s a lot warmer than Mexico City was. We are only here for a day which is a shame. I would rather have added a day here and taken off one from Mexico City. We spent the morning on a rickety old tourist bus seeing all the sights. And then I finally found an internet cafe - yey - and that´s why my blog can finally be updated. Later this afternoon we head off to Oaxaca ... read more

Well, it´s taken a few days to get to a place that has internet cafes. Mexico city didn´t seem to have any (well, not any obvious ones). Thankfully the flights over were uneventful (always a good thing). We stopped overnight in LA just to break up the flights. Although we were exhausted once we got off the plane, we ended up doing a city tour around LA and seeing all the typical touisty sights such as the Hollywood sign, Venice beach, Mann´s Chinese Theatre etc. The most intersting event was in a McDonald´s store in LA (we were desperate...) Merryn was trying to get a bottle of water. You wouldn´t think that would be too difficult, surely? "Can I please have a bottle of water?" "huh?" "A bottle of water." "Sorry?" Pointing: "A BOTTLE OF WATER" ... read more
