Last Sunday we visited the Coulson Fire Fighting facility on the other side of the lake. They are restoring one of the seaplanes so it can fly out to a museum in the USA. Its being repainted in its original US Navy dark blue. There were originally seven built, only two remain, the one in service as a water bomber and the one being restored. We had a walk in the lakeshore park and looked at the first nation petroglyphs on the rocks. Roast pork for dinner. Wednesday Larry and I were up in the dark at 5.30am to go fishing with neighbour Richard who is a commercial fishing boat captain. The public launch at PA was a hive of activity, boats launching every couple of minutes. Word had got around that the Springer Salmon run ... read more

After an uncomfortable Tuesday night (burning legs:) I drove the truck down to Victoria for a couple of days. Stopped at Cathedral Grove to inspect the arboreal spectacularium. (made that one up, don't bother checking the dictionary :) a grove of giant trees. Some very impressive specimens. The Big Tree ( a lot of thought went into that one!) was over 70m tall and 800 years old. Lots of tourists too. About 100 miles later I pulled up at Steve Drane HD dealership, Victoria. The only dealer on the island. It became apparent that that last sentence was very significant. Island prices, captive market and HST tax! Expecting to spend a wedge I was very disappointed: limited choice, high prices as bad as UK, (ie: rain suit I bought in Denver for $200 was C$300), no ... read more

Sunday morning was hot but I went out for a walk along Faber Road, admiring the houses overlooking the lake as I went. Moved from shaded areas one to another. As I proceeded in a westerly direction (old habits die hard :)) I heard the engines of the water bomber start up. Realising it was going to take off I jogged up and down the road trying to get a clear view through the trees for a photo or video. I must have amused the neighbours as I frantically searched for a good position; there were a lot of trees! I failed to get the takeoff but it slowly circled the lake twice before flying away. It did fly over me at one stage though so I got some pics. Spent the late afternoon swimming again, ... read more

Sadly, on Tuesday this week, Larry & Judy's Labrador Sonny had to be put down. Sonny had been unwell for some time and eventually, after a bad night, was unable to get up. The vet examination confirmed that he was undoubtedly suffering from a large tumour in his abdomen which was causing extensive problems. He was nearly 14 and had had a good life. Didnt want Judy to have to cook so I bought us a Chinese from Quality Foods, huge portions and tasty! Wednesday we drove to Tofino on the Pacific coast. A smal trendy fishing town at the end of the Pacific Rim Highway. We stopped at the famous Long Beach, a UNESCO world heritage site. Picturesque. In Tofino we watched charter boats unloading their catch whilst we ate lunch. I had a very ... read more

On Thursday we launched the boat and ran up to Taylor Arm (about 8 miles) to check out the fish a good excuse for two hours running in the new 15hp kicker motor. The Fish Finder showed that the Sockeye Salmon were migrating up to the small rivers. You're not permitted to land these at the moment as they need to be allowed to spawn. We'll hopefully catch some Springers next week. Meanwhile Sonny did his usual thing, relaxing! He is 14yrs old so he has an excuse. Friday we waited in for a delivery of sand and Saturday Larry and neighbour Karsten dug a gurt big hole, placed the cistern and covered it over while I supervised and took photos :)) In the afternoon we went into Port Alberni to the towns Centennial Fair. Varous ... read more

I'M settling in to island life now. Quite a bit more relaxed than the mainland. People are extremely friendly and welcoming. The weather has been good, cool starts to the days but warming up by mid morning and fully sunny for the rest of the day. The weekend is predicted to be around 84c. Sproat Lake is about 10km from Port Alberni, an easy drive through the forests. The next lake is Central Lake, a colder, deeper lake than Sproat. We drove there to check out the launch/landing facilities. Along the way we passed a Spruce tree with unusual decorations up to about 30ft off the ground! Daps, flip flops, toys, chairs, anything really. No idea what that was about. At the lake was a Salmon Hatchery. The fish population is being supplemented by these nurserys. ... read more

So I've decided to try a holiday blog for my Canadian trip. I'll just catch up on the first couple of days. I stayed up too late watching the Olympic opening ceremony and had little sleep before I flew from Gatwick to Vancouver. Air Transat was ok and was glad of the seat upgrade even though I can never sleep on a plane. Arrived on time but immigration took an hour. 7 positions out of 20 were shut. Before people complain too much about getting through our airports they should look at what happens in other countries. Anyway transfer to Tswassenn Ferry terminal was by train and bus, no problems except whilst waiting at the bus station I identified the pikey Clampett family waiting to board my bus. Of course when I got on the bus ... read more
