…began in the dark. Well, not really since the sun was already up by the time we (Mike) rolled out of bed…at 7:30…but there was no electricity. It was pretty windy last night…you know, that whole tornado thing…probably excess wind…maybe it knocked out the power. Mike flicked a bunch of switches verifying that yes, in fact, there was no electricity coming into the trailer. He even went out to the breaker box we were plugged into and checked that they were still in the ON position…yep, the ones above our plug were still on. We sat around unable to start our morning routine of, toast and coffee for Mike and a smoothie for me. I called the campground office to see how long the power would be out, but they weren’t open yet. Just after 9:00 ... read more

…we bugged Brent at work…at lunch…very small chance he’d get in trouble having us all there…what could I have done to get him in trouble with his commander??? I’ll have to think of something for next time…wait, he’ll be retired from the Army before then…DARN! I missed my last chance! Brent is a Sergeant First Class in the 4th Infantry Division stationed at Fort Carson. He’s a Team Chief in charge of 34 mechanics, overseeing the maintenance of the 87 tanks and 2 Army Breaching Vehicles in his brigade. He has an office, but he only uses it when the Army makes him. He’d much rather be down on the shop floor alongside his men. He’s good at what he does and has earned the respect of his commanders and his men. Good, ‘cause he ain’t ... read more

…was a very casual day spent with my sister, brother-in-law and nephews. In fact, all we did was hang out at their house. Brent grilled up some delicious ribs, Donelle put together a wonderful dinner and we got caught up, ate, then watched a high tech slide show. Do you remember when family or friends went on vacation and, when they got home, they’d bring over slides of their trip and you’d have to sit there for hours in the dark of your living room listening to them drone on and on about what a wonderful time they had and explain in minute detail EVERY picture projected onto the bedsheet your parents pinned to the wall? My family was THAT FAMILY. My dad has HUNDREDS of slides of pictures he took himself or purchased from the ... read more

…I woke up feeling dehydrated so I downed a bottle of water…then another. By 9:00 I’d had two bottles and started a third when we left the campground. The trusty cooler was packed with more and I’d restocked the refrigerator. All set. Today we drove through Wyoming…lots of grazing land…lots. Lots of cows and sheep and horses…lots. Rest areas on Hwy 18…not lots…one…better use it whether you think you need it or not. Way up ahead of us we could dark clouds and that gray curtain of rain. We were in a nice sunny stretch and hoped we wouldn’t have to drive through it. As I gazed off in the distance I saw a bolt of lightning shoot down in the middle of that curtain. A couple minutes later I saw another. Wherever that was, they ... read more

…was another drive day. Not the usual Point A to Point B, but a beautiful day trip through Custer State Park. One of the other campers a long time ago in a campground far, far away suggested it…okay maybe it was just the campground in Interior a few days ago. We, in turn, passed along the suggestion and vague directions to another camping couple yesterday. I hope they found it and enjoyed it. They left this morning. The drive is within the Custer State Park borders, but as long as you stay on Highway 16A you won’t have to pay the park entrance fee because Hwy 16A cuts through the park. The moment you deviate from the route there is a booth with a nice Park Ranger or two who will happily take your money and ... read more

…and on the To-Do List is the Crazy Horse Memorial and Mount Rushmore. First up…Crazy Horse Memorial…it’s huge. It’s a publicly funded project—entrance fees, donations and proceeds from souvenir and food sales all help to make the work on the memorial happen. There are no federal, state, county or city funds involved. The parking lot is really big and RV friendly. As you enter the main building you are encouraged to watch a short film about the sculptor, Korczak Ziolkowski, how the memorial came about and the first 50 or so years of the project. It’s quite informative and, for my Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing friends out there, captioned. From there you can tour the Native American museum which is pretty big, go outside and see a 1/34th scale model of the memorial as well as the ... read more

…was a short drive day as far as distance went, but longer because we drove through and stopped several times in Badlands National Park to take pictures. Wow. It looked like a miniature version of the Grand Canyon. Parts of it also reminded me of eastern Washington. It was super RV friendly. The pull-outs along the windy, twisty road were long enough to accommodate even really long RVs. The parking lots at the scenic overlooks had parking along the curb designed for extra-long vehicles. The main road looping through was nicely paved…no potholes, cracks, crevices or frost heave bumps. There are a few dirt side roads, but they recommend not taking RVs through there as rain may make them impassable. There was plenty to see on the loop road so you didn’t feel like you were ... read more

…was another Point A to Point B day...with a teaser of what's to come. We’re coming into some iffy weather now. Yesterday on our way to our parking lot for the night we ran into lots of rain, wind and some very dark clouds. The weather is unseasonable everywhere. Today the weather wasn’t so bad, but at we were driving through the southern part of Minnesota the windmills in the wind farms we passed were earning their keep. Minnesota is the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” but what qualifies as a lake? We passed a handful of bodies of water and I would count them down…”9,999 more…9,998 more…9,997 more…” Mike called them cow ponds because they weren’t really big enough to be lakes. Neither of us knew if these were part of the 10,000 or not so ... read more

…we left the casino behind continuing our travels west. Today brought us across the state of Illinois, across the northeast corner of Iowa and up into Minnesota where we parking lot camped for the night. The day would have been another boring travel day had it not been for Mike’s curiosity. He did some research to see how far out of the way Dyersville, Iowa was from our planned route…only a few miles. He added The Field of Dreams movie site to our itinerary! I was so excited when he told me that; I love the movie. It looks just the way it did in the movie. With today being a weekday, the crowd was small. There were just a handful of families, couples and trios of friends. The weather was perfect, too. They have a ... read more

…another baseball day. Can’t have too many of those. Today’s game is brought to you by the letters CTA and the numbers 2 and 0. Chicago is another city with a really good public transportation system. The only problem we ran into was the Metra train from Chicago back to Joliet. We had to leave the game early. But, like in Baltimore, we came to see the stadium not the game. We learned in Baltimore that the easiest way to get to a game is to just figure out which train to get on to begin with. From there, just follow the jerseys. Walking up to the home plate entrance with its big red Wrigley Field sign was incredible. Just being in one of the oldest ballparks in Major League Baseball is thrilling. Only Fenway Park ... read more
