Is it possible to keep having this much fun day after day?? Today, we had an early start when Elodie slipped and proceeded into the L'Oise River and headed upstream to the village of Auvers sur Oise. On arrival, Henry took us on a very interesting walking tour of the village, where Vincent van Gogh spent the last 70 days of his life. He showed us scenes within the village that van Gogh painted, where he lived and where he is buried. Van Gogh painted around 80 pictures in these last 70 days of his life. Unknown to me was the fact that van Gogh shot himself and, although he didn't die straight away, succumbed to his injuries three days later. His considerable industry before he died made me wonder whether he planned his final days. ... read more

We have completed the day as a tired but happy bunch but lets go back to the beginning. After our first night onboard and a delicious breakfast we were eager to get started with our first bike ride. We donned our lycra and hi-viz and readied ourselves to saddle up. We found a quiet corner of a park and adjusted seat heights, figured out how the gears and brakes work and did a few practice laps. Then, the bad news from (only one more hill Henry) - the first leg was to be the steepest climb of the day. It was a beautiful forested area but it was difficult to enjoy the view with the sweat blurring our vision!! After a number of ups and downs we arrived at Versailles where we enjoyed our packed lunches ... read more

Oh what a delightful day (except for the odd hiccup for some). After a relaxing morning which included a lovely walk around the North Marais area (where Kerrie found some yummy baklava) we packed up and headed for the Elodie. Now this should have been a simple 20min Uber ride and it was for some. For Mike and Kerrie it was somewhat different as they got a renegade Uber driver who took them for an (un)guided tour of the outer suburbs of Paris. Two and a half hours later, they arrived at Elodie and were remarkably calm considering the experience they had just endured!!! We met the rest of the Elodie team, now consisting of: Mike & Jenny, Mike & Kerrie, Brian & Jenny, Pru & Ian, Jonathan & Maureen, Tim and Ingrid, Warwick and Kathy, ... read more

Another marvelous day. Our last full day in this wonderful city, made even more special as we are exploring it with friends. Today, Jonathan and Maureen joined Jenny and I for a trip to the Versailles Palace. After being ripped off for a coffee (13Euro for two cappuccinos - that's close to $20!!!) we caught the train to Versailles (about a 45min trip). After clearing security (stage 1) we saw a massive long queue and chuckled because we had pre-bought our tickets and thought we could bypass that line. Imagine our disappointment when we realized everybody else had also pre-bought their tickets and this was THE QUEUE to get in. It moved along pretty smartly and wasn't too long a wait. The crowds inside were amazing but so were the various rooms of the Palace. The ... read more

This blog is being written under some duress!! We are exhausted!! But what a great day. At 10.00am this morning we met with two other tourists and two AirBnB guides for a bike tour of the Marais and canal area. This lasted about 4 hours and was an absolute treat. The French (actually Venezuelan, but who cares) guides showed us some special places around the Marais district that most people would not normally find and we then headed up the St Martin's canal (built at the time of Napoleon) to the Bassin de la Vilette, which just happens to be where we will board the Elodie on Sunday. The tour was great in that it introduced us to the Paris share-bike system, which is really easy to use. For a very small fee you can access ... read more

I'm not sure we are going to be able to maintain this pace!! The leisurely trip on the barge is starting to look VERY attractive. We walked around 12km today and saw a fair bit of Paris. We started with the Bastille markets which have a mixture of fresh produce and clothing stalls. We restocked our cheese supply and sampled the pastries. Next was La Place des Vosges, described by our good friend Suzette as "the most lovely square in the world" and she was right. The surrounding townhouses were architectural works of art and the trees in the park had the first hint of colour change as autumn approaches. Then it was on the metro across to the Arc de Triomphe. After being accosted by clowns as we emerged from the metro, we started the ... read more

A sad farewell to our Dutch hosts and the wonderful city of Amsterdam. A 300km/h train trip to Paris and a rendezvous with our dear friends, Mike and Kerrie Lang. All went smoothly with our travel, the train trip was very comfortable, passing through Rotterdam, Antwerp, Brussels and on to Gare du Nord in Paris. We arrived at our AirBnB in Boulevard Beaumarchais just after 3.00pm to be met by Mike and Kerrie, wine, cheese and crusty bread. A perfect start to out Paris sojourn!! We all went for a walk along the Seine and around the Notre Dame Cathedral (a remarkable structure) to work up an appetite for dinner. Paris is markedly different from Amsterdam and we need to make a mental adjustment to accommodate the hustle and bustle of the Parisians. M&K had a ... read more

Hallo Dames en Heren, We are on the train from Amsterdam to Paris having had a wonderful stay in Amsterdam. Our AirBnB hosts, Dicky and John, were incredibly attentive and thoughtful. They made us breakfast each morning and were keen to chat whenever possible. Their home is magnificent and we would certainly recommend them to anyone looking for quality accommodation in a central location. Yesterday we did the mandatory canal boat trip which was really good as it showed us parts of the city we hadn't encountered earlier. Afterwards, we seemed to find every market place in Amsterdam - the flower markets, bric-a-brac, you name it, we found it!! (The luggage is putting on weight already!!) In the evening we went to the ballet at the National Opera & Ballet Centre with Jenny's friend, Claudia. She ... read more

Another glorious day. Weather perfect, early start, off to the markets, amazing designer labels for very reasonable prices (authentic, trust me!!). Found a corner shop with the most incredible cheese and bakery selection - cholesterol nightmare!! Went to the Maritime Museum. In my opinion (and whilst admitting I might be biased), an absolute must see. Impressive building which used to be the Admiralty Arsenal. The whole place a reminder of what great seafarers the Dutch have been for many centuries. They were streets ahead of every other nation in map making. On display was a set of nine volumes of maps covering the whole globe, produced in 1595 - priceless!!. A feature item was the, now unused, Royal Barge - ornate to the extreme. Jenny suffered museum overload and bailed out after an hour or two ... read more

After walking our legs off yesterday (12km), we got our priorities right today and hired bikes for the remainder of our time in Amsterdam. And what a blessing they have been!! What a great way to get around. We spent about 3 hours in the Rijksmuseum and were in awe at the amazing number of old masters they have there. Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Matisse, to name but a few. The building we are staying in is known as the Silk Merchants Palace and has a very ornate white marble entrance hall. Two paintings by Gerard de Lairesse (1641-1711) commissioned by the Silk Merchant, Philip de Flines, are now hanging in the Rijksmuseum. They are amazing works about 2.5m x 1.2m and done in a style which makes them appear three dimensional. See attached. After the museum ... read more
