The journey to KL from the Cameron Highlands is a fairly straightforward 4-5 hour bus journey, that is unless you dimwittingly ply your youngest child with gallons of strawberry milk before undertaking said journey, only for him to chunder foul smelling sour milk all over you 10 minutes into the journey. The slightly strawberry-ish aroma wasn't even enough to make it bearable. Of course I blame the numerous switchbacks it takes to get out of the Highlands rather than any lack of parenting forethought on our part. Why they never just build the roads so they go straight down is beyond me, sure it might be a bit hair raising at times, especially if you started to reach the sound barrier and i'm sure the noise from vehicles screaming up in 1st gear would be a ... read more

'Malaysia, Truly Asia'. This advertising slogan, its cheesy song and its associated imagery have been blasted at us repeatedly for months from hotel TV's all over Asia so it's got a lot to live up to. We were actually looking forward to our visit to Malaysia as although we've visited before we've not really visited peninsular Malaysia at all. For our honeymoon six years previously we spent a few days in Kuala Lumpur at the Mandarin Oriental and then spent the rest of of the time in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo hanging with Orangutans. On our previous long term travels in 2007 we spent a couple of days in KL (sadly not the Mandarin Oriental that time though) but only so we could catch our onward flight to the Philippines, again missing out on what else the ... read more

"Holla! City of squala!" - Mr Chow, The Hangover 2 We arrive to a city under siege... Not by the usual hordes of tourists that arrive at this time of year, as dry season has just started, but by the rising floodwaters pushing down from the north. The place is deserted, probably something to do with governments advising against all but essential travel to the city. We chose to come back to the city for two reasons, the first is because Faye wants some new ink (of course, so do I) and second, because it's an ideal place to start our journey south. Does getting tattooed count as essential travel? We stayed on Phra Arthit road, right next to the bursting banks of the Chao Phraya River. The height of the river was the least of ... read more

So... we find ourselves in Saigon with nothing to do and more than a couple of months left on our visas. It was time to put into action something we’d been meaning to do for a while on this trip, find somewhere nice to settle down for a while, do nothing and just enjoy being a family with no work commitments to get in the way. We weren’t sure where to go but after wandering around the city and being repeatedly bombarded by images of Phu Quoc in every travel agents window we thought it would be a shame to give it a miss. Lying planet also give it a stellar write up and I’ve also heard good things on forums so an easy booking with Air Mekong online later and we were all ready to ... read more

Ho Chi Minh City, or Saigon to pretty much everyone who lives there, it's a city that at first glance appears hard to love, it's just another mega Asian city, it's crowded, it's polluted and it's hectic. So why have we come back? To put it simply, we've grown to love it and the country it belongs to. We've actually spent a bit of time here, the first while waiting for visas to be processed, a wait that resulted in the conception of Nate (clearly, there was nothing on TV that week) and the second while waiting for a friend to arrive back from the UK. Like the rest of Asia, the people lives spill out of their homes and onto the pavement for all to see and we love the openness of it. Friendly faces ... read more

Moving onwards we arrived in Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital. The journey was a fairly easy 6 hours and the bus dropped us off at the central market so we enlisted the help of a Tuk Tuk to help carry our stuff around (That 4-5kg Stone Baphuon Lion and 3kg stone apsara seemed like such a good buy at the time) while we found a hotel to stay at. We looked at a couple of options and realised that it wasn’t all that cheap for a fairly standard hotel room. We ended staying in a sort of two bedroom apartment, which was great as it had a large communal area for the boys to charge around, but it did lack a kitchen, not that that matters as food is hardly expensive here. As we’ve been to Phnom ... read more

Getting to Siem Reap in Cambodia from Bangkok involves crossing the worst land border I’ve ever experienced at Poipet, and the thought of doing it again for the third time filled me with apprehension. Trying to dodge the numerous scams is tiring and the biggest scam of all on our previous crossings was the ‘fee’ that the Cambodian officials try to impose to speed up the processing of the visa. Last time we sat and waited for an hour while I bargained the fee down to $3.50 from $10 ($5 each), which seems stupid now looking back as $6.50 is hardly worth it, but when you’re essentially paying for nothing (there’s not supposed to be a fee, the visa is $20, that’s all) it’s all about the principle. This time though I had it mind that ... read more

After crossing the Mekong into Laos, we headed straight to the Immigration desk, got our visas (1 month, $35), got stamped in and then found a hotel to crash for the night with the intention of catching the slow boat to Luang Prabang the next day. The hotel charged us in Thai baht which suited us just fine as we didn’t have any Laos Kip, something which didn’t matter at all as everywhere accepts baht. We later found an ATM which was great as we could stash our baht for later when we crossed back into Thailand, a wallet full of kip won’t get you very far in Thailand. We asked around about the slow boat and the general consensus was to go down to the ferry ‘pier’ for around 9am in the morning, so all ... read more

We flew into Bangkok, all smiles... Our favourite city in the world. A city that evokes every emotion and provokes every sense. A city I hate to love. We headed straight to the backpacker Mecca of Banglamphu (Khao San Road), an area that straight away fires up the emotions. The travel snob in me can't help but sneer, how easy, how unauthentic, and how very un-Thai. The tourist in me shakes with glee, the ease, the shopping, and yay a McDonalds! Although we've been walking familiar ground for a month now, Bangkok feels like something else, after so many visits over the years it feels a little like home. Even better yet, my parents were here. They'd arrived a few days earlier and we were here to surprise them. We knew what hotel they were staying ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City June 5th 2011

We made it! Our plan was to head east till we got to SE Asia and then just relax. Wander around from country to country for as long as visas would allow, just enjoying being on the road. With nothing particular to see we could enjoy being as a family with no work commitments keeping us apart. Sadly our arrival into Vietnam wasn't quite as relaxing as we'd have hoped. Faye felt that something didn't seem right while we were in southern China, so once we crossed into Vietnam our first task was to find a clinic with western standards of care to investigate what was wrong. From the clinic we were then referred to a specialist at The French Hospital who could determine what was going on. Although not life threatening, the issue could rapidly ... read more
