Went to an amazing Acrobatics show, some of the performers were very young but some incredible acts. One boy juggled about ten balls at once! Sold out house with Chinese people, so at least we know we got the real deal this time. It was truly amazing, my mouth was agape half of the time. Had a go at Calligraphy... I was terrible. haha, not suprised, but to be fair it was the first time I have tried it. Tried to write a poem by Li Bai after giving up on drawing nice looking characters... 低头思故乡... I am looking forward to returning home, but sad to have to leave China. Definitely going to come back to see more of this amazing country. BNU announced today that they are going to offer two of the students on ... read more

We went to the night food market a couple of days ago. They didn't have any Dog (it turns out that eating Dog isn't as popular here as it's made out to be in the West - I still haven't found anyone here who says that they eat it). But I tried Scorpions, Snake and had some deep fried Ice-cream, so good! Scorpions actually taste just like fried chicken! Seriously! We went for some Karaoke, apparently a very Chinese thing to do. Even made an attempt to sing 朋友, the song our class is meant to 'perform' at the closing ceremony. Came back at like 12 to make our 8am Mandarin class... the next day there was only ONE student in some classes. It's embarrassing for us... putting the UK in such a bad light. It's ... read more

I think one of the big things I'm going to miss when I get home is how much of a celebrity I am here. We get stared at wherever we go. Today more than ever. Can get annoying sometimes ~ like when we were sitting in Tiananmen Square and people kept coming up behind and us just starting at us for ages, but I love being asked for pictures! Must have posed with Chinese about 20 times just today! We were hanging about waiting for the rest of our group by the exit of the Forbidden City and so many people were like, OMG white people, and wanted pictures. Or just stared. We figured if we run out of money we can just get a hat and pose in Tiananmen Square and charge 1 Yuan per ... read more

Today I climbed the Great Wall of China! It was fantastic, lived up to the hype. The scenery was great, almost up in mountains, but it's not something to listen to me describe, just something that you have to do yourself! Quoting a sign from one of the many shops there, Mao Zedong himself apparently said: 'he who doesn't reach the Great Wall isn't a true man!' This was on a shop selling souvenir certificates, but still! :P Obviously we could only visit a small part of the ridiculously long wall - we went to the Juyongguan Pass, less than 2 hours drive from Beijing, the site of many great battles apparently... but my Chinese history is very sketchy. I'd definitely like to see other parts of it though, some of the parts without all of ... read more

Sun was out for the first time today! So much nicer to be out, clear in all directions instead of the 200m or so visibility from the last few days. Great for pictures too! We went to visit the Temple of Heaven in the afternoon, first of the big tourist sites. Finally saw some other foreigners! The temple site was spectacular. There were hundreds of Chinese people doing TaiChi, singing and dancing together. It was so refreshing to see so many people simply dancing around, many just on their own, lost in dance and free of life's worries for a while. There's a place in the temple site called 'Echo Wall', where you can stand at one point of the wall and speak shockingly clearly with a friend a distance away down the wall. I don't ... read more

Our teacher stopped speaking English today. And as I start to write this my hand tries to make the first few words into Chinese characters (I wrote this in my notepad first!). Wow. Making progress! haha We went to this pottery and craft place today to the North-East of Beijing. Got to paint some plates and attempt to make some pottery on the spinning plate things (the correct terminology eludes me). I attempted to draw 福, the character for happiness/good luck. One of the Chinese said I should learn more characters because I am a natural haha, I expect he was just trying to be nice, but I am looking forward to our calligraphy classes. To my surprise I was amazing at the pottery at first, until I tried to be too flash and it all ... read more

I feel like I am in a big Chinese lesson. With mini Chinese lessons every morning at 8am. Everywhere I go I hear Chinese. It's not like England where there are so many different races and creeds walking about town. I still haven't seen ANYONE who isn't from the group I am with who is white, or black, or brown... Unsurprisingly we get a lot of weird looks wherever we go. Had our first Chinese lesson today. I am in the top group! :O Lesson went pretty well, sort of brought together the basics that I knew and gave me confidence to actually start using it in the 'real world' which I am surrounded by atm! Our teacher said she won't be writing any pinyin from tomorrow ~ just characters! Scary! But I do need to ... read more

If my past travels have taken me to other countries, China is a different world. When I stepped outside of the international student halls this morning I finally stepped into China. I'm too tired to explain... it's just so different. The only problem I have found is the dryness of the air. I have never experienced anything like this before. Just walking around campus I fell all the moisture leaving my body! Especially the mouth and throat, but my skin is drying out so quickly. Beijing has this every spring apparently; I am not sure of the reason. In summer the heat causes further problems with the city's pollution and winters can be very cold... I don't think I will ever want to settle here for an extended period of time! Apart from the small inconvenience ... read more

Flying with Emirates was pretty damn nice. The entertainment was incredible. They had every UK number 1... ever! On my flight to Dubai I had the most incredible dessert (for a plane anyway!) I think it was called a Mango & Passion Fruit Cheesecake, but it had more of a mousse texture. So sweet! Was pretty lucky with who I ended up sitting next to on my Dubai - Beijing flight. I had a very talkative Chinese man from a place to the North-East of Beijing. Got a good bit of insight into what the next three weeks might be like from him. "You will learn so much!" I hope so! He lived a lifestyle which I would compare to that of Ryan Bingham (played by George Clooney) from one of the 5+ films I watched ... read more

I love going to new places. I though of a whole list of great words to describe the feeling, but after numerous attempts to sleep and being woken by the never ending gate announcements, (from which my knowledge of Arabic has grown from the simple 'thank you' to include the numbers 1, 2 and 3 ~ it's hard to hear something so many times and it not slide into your brain) it has left my mind. Aside from Egypt, where I was kept very much on the tourists' trail, I have not had much had much exposure to Arabic. I curse myself for the fact that the idea of learning Arabic has already popped into my mind. One crazily hard language at a time Michael! Yet I've made a mental note to look into it when ... read more
