Sunday 1 Sept. Up at sparrow’s today, early breakfast and then off to the airport. Domestic this time, less hassles in that we didn’t have to go through customs and immigration. Other than that officialdom reigned. We had to go through three sets of check points. The first was about 40 metres from the car park – here we had our passports checked and proof that we were flying shown. People fare welling or greeting passengers are not allowed to enter the terminal. Next stop (60 metre walk) was to go through security where all our luggage and us were checked. Then to check in. After that through another screening area where we were scanned again. The flight to Urgench took an hour. The aircraft was an A320 and the flight was near full. The aircraft ... read more

Friday 30 Aug. Just starting the second full day in Tashkent. Had breakfast and now waiting for three Kiwis to arrive and then we'll head off to the markets. As today is Friday I don't know what will or won't be open. Friday is the main prayer day in the Islamic week. Yesterday spent most of the day out. Went to the Uzbekistan Museum of Railway Technology (also known as just The Railway Museum or Transportation Museum). Got there by using the subway. One of the doorman at the hotel wrote down the stations I had to go to and where I changed trains. Initially it was a bit confusing until I worked out that the three connecting stations have different names depending on which Line you are on (Red, Green and Blue). The nearest Metro ... read more

Here it is day 3 - sitting at Changi Airport waiting for onward flight to Dubai. Flight time is about 2 hours away so I am wiling away the time in the Kris Business Class Lounge. Arrived in Singapore on Sunday afternoon and proceeded by taxi to my friend Peter's place for a couple of nights. Peter's son Ryan was also staying with him. We went out to a local food place (Chinese) and had a very pleasant dinner. THe food, although from a "fast Food" establishment was tasty. I thought the other guys had ordered too much (seven dishes) but when they came I saw local knowledge helps. The dishes were smallish. Yesterday (Monday) I did the tourist thing. Went up to Orchard Road and jumped on the Singapore Airlines Hop-on Hop-off bus. Traveled around ... read more

24 Aug 2013. Well the trip has started. First leg - very mundane - from Canberra to Sydney. Not much to report - except QANTAS has improved it's afternoon refreshments. The evening was spent killing time. Oh yeah! And watching the Wallabies get done (AGAIN). God knows what the final score was - I switched off with 10 minutes to go. Spent the first half and 30 min of second in the Bar downstairs. Mixed audience in the bar: an Irishman, a Yank, an young couple who had digs at one another (he was an Aussie and her - a Kiwi), and about six Aussies. Must admit the Kiwis played well - well they should have they had 16 men on the field. That's about it at the present time. Off to Singapore in the morning. ... read more
