Where to start part 2? After a public bus trip to a village in central eastern Sabah, we really started our adventure. Big packs were stowed away, day packs prepared and much DEET applied - we were off to the jungle. We jumped in a boat and headed to our jungle camp where we learned how to hang our hammocks, our accommodation for the night. After mastering that art, we headed down the river in search of wildlife. We saw heaps of macaques, many probiscus monkeys, a few hornbills but best of all Alice spotted an orangutan! He was a young male nesting in the tree tops - apparently orangutans can make up to 5 nests a day for eating and resting in! Whilst I don't think any of us took award winning photos, it was ... read more

Well, home at last! At this stage, I have very mixed feelings about being back in Australia. Whilst I did have times during my trip that I wished I was home, these feelings tended to be infrequent and passed relatively quickly. I did have a great time travelling - meeting new people, seeing and experiencing something new each and every day. Still, all good things must come to an end and it is time for me to start replenishing my bank accounts given the severe thrashing they have taken over the past 6 months. On the positive side, in the 2 weeks I have been home…. § I have managed to catch up with a few of my friends and some of my family and that really has been great. I am really looking forward to ... read more

Xian - home of the Terracotta Warriors, and they definitely were the highlight of the days Dad and I had in Xian. In keeping with the “Merryn’s budget tours” tradition, Dad and I got to the Terracotta Warriors on the public bus and enjoyed the unlimited time we had at the complex. Most of the tour groups stop for 2 hours, or, if you are lucky, 2 and 1/2 hours. We were there for well over 3 hours. Of course, with Dad and I jostling for the same photo spots, it was always going to be a long stay. I also decided to do one lap of Pit 1 with my small lens and then another with the zoom! I am reasonably happy with the results but I think everyone needs to visit it for themselves. ... read more

After arriving in Beijing without accommodation pre-arranged (sounding like a pattern to you?), I was lucky enough to find a hotel reservation desk at the Beijing train station and was checked into a relatively nice hotel room close to a major shopping area by 8 am! After wandering the local area all day, I went and met my Dad at the Beijing airport. He was able to join me for the final 2 weeks of my trip and China had always been Dad’s dream destination so this opportunity was perfect. After too little sleep, we spent our first full day in Beijing wandering around Tiananmen Square (including Mao’s mausoleum) and the Forbidden City (that place just goes on and on and on and on.......). Next day, we hit the ‘Pearl’ Market (lots of fresh fish and ... read more

Well after such a great time in Yangshuo, I was a little concerned that I would be disappointed with Lijiang and Tiger Leaping Gorge - not a chance! Lijiang was beautiful. I stayed in the old town and had 2 days wandering around, shopping, eating local delicacies, venturing into Black Dragon Pool Park, watching Naxi (local minority group) dancing and listening to Naxi ancient music at a concert. Tiger Leaping Gorge was a fun experience too. I left the majority of my possessions in Lijiang, took a local bus to Qiaotou, found a cheap hotel and mentally prepared for a long day’s hiking. Luckily, I did not have a good map that night because the next morning I was advised by the local café owner that my trek would take 9 hours! No worries. Well …. ... read more

Well, my entree into mainland China was both interesting and exciting. Travel advice from Hong Kong with regards to any travel except flying was minimal so I arrived at Shenzhen (the border of Hong Kong and mainland China) a little after midday in the hope of getting an overnight train or bus to Yangshuo. And I should have studied up on my mandarin before getting here.......unfortunately, I still have Arabic floating through my brain so trying to ask for a ticket and what time I will arrive at my destination was all too much. Thankfully there were a few bilingual Chinese passengers to help me out with my bus ticket. As time has gone by since then, I have started to remember and learn phrases that get me by. In particular, I have become addicted to ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon October 4th 2006

I felt like I had stepped into the set of 'Bladerunner' when I got out of the airport bus in Kowloon in the early evening after a long flight from Cairo via Dubai and Bangkok. The place was buzzing and I was just trying to find the obscure little hostel that I had pre-booked. Lots of walking in the wrong direction, then asking for directions, resulted in me finding my place only about 300m from where I started! For my first full day in Hong Kong, the task was to find a sports bar showing the AFL grand final - much more difficult than I expected. I was with a fellow traveller, Simone, from Holland who was on her way home after a 10 month trip that included 8 months in Oz. We did a little ... read more

Ahhhhhh Egypt ....... Now I know I should start this blog with tales of the fantastic temples I visited, the Pyramids of Giza, the 2 days sailing on a felucca down the Nile, but, no, I want to open with tales of transportation! .........And I thought playing in the traffic in Rome was fun! Rome has absolutely nothing on Cairo. The drivers are completely crazy, lane markings on roads are non-existent or ignored (if 5 cars can physically fit across 3 lanes then there will be 5 lanes of vehicles!), and all cars, especially taxis, are very battered (and as Sherif said to me, "if a car does not have dents, it has just come out of the showroom"). To get on and off public buses requires skills in jumping to/from a moving vehicle without being ... read more

We did it! Kilimanjaro at 5,895m conquered by Merryn, Joe and Mike at 6:24am on Saturday 2 September 2006. And here are the details....... After I had been away from Australia for 4 months, Joe was finally able to join me in my world adventure, even if it was for only one week. But what a great week it was. Mike, Joe's best mate, also joined in for the challenge. As mentioned a little later, I know I would not have made it to the top without them. So, note to anyone contemplating this climb - take good friends with you. We met up in Nairobi, took a bus to Moshi, Tanzania and waited at our hotel to meet our guide and find out a little more about what we were in for over the next ... read more

Africa » Tanzania » North » Serengeti National Park August 27th 2006

The title of this blog is the same as the bumper sticker on one of the land cruisers my tour group spent the best part of week travelling around in and it truly became our motto for the week. There was never a hurry and there was never a problem ("hakuna matata")! I have excluded the details of the first 36 hours in Africa (from my arrival in Nairobi through to my entry into Tanzania) from this blog simply because it was entirely painful - switching hotels, transfers not on time etc. Thankfully, once in Tanzania, the trip was very smooth. My tour group included me, 2 Americans and 5 Canadians so it was small but relatively cohesive group. And just so many highlights to share. We visited Lake Manyara for our first safari and saw ... read more
