Not many words with this entry as most of the pictures are simply repeats or variations of pictures I have taken in warmer weather! This is like my 'Spring' entry from the UK in April 2010 where it was all about the look, feel, and mood of the UK in Spring. This is the look of Darkhan as we approach winter proper. Mongolia has lived up to my weather expectations! Most days are clear with bright blue skies. However, in the last few weeks, the occasional overcast day signals we are about to experience some snow fall. So far, the actual amount of snowfall has been limited to between 5-10 cm at a time. But the temperature is now constantly below freezing so the snow that has fallen is hanging around - dangerously when it comes ... read more

The title of this blog is dedicated to my soon-to-be-departing-Mongolia-friend, Beth, who has used this statement many times over the past 3 months to retain her amazing optimism. I will certainly miss her. And I have to say, since I published my last blog, I have had some great experiences.....so let's commence! The race that didn't stop a nation The 150th running of the Melbourne Cup has been and gone. I certainly told my Dad that the best looking horse in the race was 'Americain' but I followed up on another import, 'Manighar', instead. Silly me. I may not have seen or heard the race live (thanks to being at my only work meeting for the week!), but I still managed to lose money on my betting account. That trifecta, so close, it was just not ... read more

A note of caution: Please don't read this entry too critically. I have plenty of good things to say about this beautiful country I find myself in, but there are some aspects of life here which I wish were absent. I simply want this entry to read as my personal perspective as to some of the more remarkable aspects, both positive and negative, of my everyday life here in Darkhan. The Good * So far so good on the 'land of the blue sky' being accurate. It is slowly cooling down here, wintery low teens most of last week but followed up a stunning blue sky day on Sunday. The evenings, however, are consistently chilly. The heating in my apartment came on at the end of September and in the office in early October which makes ... read more

When I created this entry a couple of weeks ago and entitled it 'the simple life', I was naively unaware as to just how simple life would be! And as to the 'centre of the universe' comment, two lovely VSO volunteers, Robin and Sally, from the UK had been living here for two years and this is how they repeatedly described Darkhan to me (and also repeated it in the book about the city they were so generous to give to me as a welcoming gift for me and a parting gift from them)! After a drive of around 4 hours from UB, the driver was extremely safety conscious and drove very slowly about which I will never complain, I arrived on the afternoon of Wednesday 8 September and was accompanied by Bishrel from VSO. We ... read more

Well, week 3 in UB is over and I expected to leave for Darkhan tomorrow but, unfortunately, I have been delayed by last Thursday's weather forecast which predicted a big storm and snow! Well, the amended forecast is for overcast weather and maximums of 21-23. Regardless, I am now due to move on Wednesday. So what has happened in the past week? UB homestay Last weekend, seven of us volunteers spent the weekend with local UB families. It was lovely to get away from the guesthouse for a night and experience a 'normal' weekend in the life of a local family. For me, it all got off to a shaky start when my host family failed to arrive at the expected time of 10am on Saturday morning. The other volunteers were all gone and I was ... read more

So why Mongolia? I know I have given a vague description of my reasoning for taking on this 12 months in Mongolia via a group email but for those of you who keep asking why, here is my logic. As many of you know, I have been wanting to work overseas for some time. Over the past few years, I have been seriously considering the volunteering/aid organisation options. After effectively 3 years of procrastination, I put in an application as 'Health Manager' with Volunteer Services Overseas (VSO) who advertise in a partnership with Australian Volunteers International. The countries advertised for this role included Mongolia, Uganda, Zambia and Sierra Leone. From the outset, I was so keen on Mongolia. Why not? I have always wanted to visit so why not live there for a bit? After working ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom April 23rd 2010

This is a different kind of blog for me. It is not about a particular location I have visited or people I have met, it is simply about what I saw and the overwhelmingly optimistic feeling that Spring 2010 brought to the United Kingdom! Sure, Australia experiences changes in seasons. For example, early in April, my Dad emailed to let me know that "winter had struck". I shared this information with Martin and Irina in Scotland and they immediately asked what temperature that would suggest. "Oh, I would think a maximum of 16 degrees celcius". At the time, in Aberdeen, the maximum temperature was around that mark and the locals were out and about, walking along the beach and queuing for ice cream! Further, just two weeks later, my Mum told me she had been for ... read more

I was not much of a tourist in London this trip - I was sadly, upon reflection, too preoccupied with the movement of the volcanic ash cloud across the UK. There was no plane action in the skies from the time I arrived until four nights later when, as my iPod randomly played Frank Sinatra's Come Fly with me, the first incoming flight passed over Peter's home in Chiswick! In the end, I was delayed just 24 hours! As a result, this blog entry will be short but sweet. So to the highlights of my short time in the English capital.....a lovely Saturday afternoon wandering about St James Park including lying on the grass and watching the world go by and then photographing the spring flowers (keep an eye out for my next blog)...... spending time ... read more

So from Aberdeen, south on the train to..... Newcastle It was a quick wander around for an hour or so between trains but I managed to enjoy seeing a miniature version of the Sydney Harbour Bridge (complete with a miniature version of the Rocks) and a larger version of the pedestrian bridge over the Yarra at Southbank! Next stop.... Hartlepool So who knew what delightful tales, tall and true, orginated in the town of Hartlepool? My interest in going there was simply to catch up with Bev and Cass who I lived with in Perth, Western Australia for a few months in 2007-08. However, thanks to Bev, the excellent tour guide, I now know plenty. First up - the monkey hangers. Legend has it that during the Napoleonic wars, a French ship beached at Hartlepool. Arrived in Kirkwall via 6 hour ferry journey from Aberdeen. Easy crossing and I even managed to watch a movie, 'Sherlock Holmes' on the way. My hostel (Orcades Hostel) was awesome. It is a recent addition in Kirkwall and I could not fault it. Everything was no bother, including my arrival at midnight, the rooms were spacious, the kitchen better equipped than my own, free internet and a great lounge/dining area. I was initially booked for 2 nights but ended up staying for all 5 nights I was in the Orkneys. Weather was dreich on day 1- it did not stop raining all day but that didn't stop me exploring Kirkwall township and organising everything for the remainder of my trip. Day 2, the weather improved markedly, and I toured St Magnus Cathedral. Built in the ... read more
