Monday, July 13, 2009 Arrived in Istanbul around 10AM, the Alaska contingent only. This turned out to be a good thing as we had the rest of the day to do as we wanted. Four of us took off together to head first to get some Turkish coffee. We sat at a little cafe where they made Turkish pancakes or crepes. We shared a spinach one and a potato one. A very tasty snack! Afterwards off we went to the Grand Bazaar. What a feast for the eyes! It is very brightly lit, clean and 4000 shops to choose from. Scarves, tea and coffee sets, jewelry, ceramics and of course carpets. The only disappointment for me has been the fact that I was not able to get online with my Mac… but other than that I ... read more

Arrıved safe and sound. My computer wıll not connect from the hotel yet so I am on a Turkısh keyboard, havıng fun gettıng used to typıng on ıt. We arrıved ın the mornıng and then washed up and headed out to the Grand Bazaar, but fırst we went to have Türk kahvesı,Turkısh coffee! Between us we dıd some bargaınıng and then wandered down to the Bosphorus to have a drınk and relax. Much of Istanbul remınds me of Israel wıth the same colours of buıldıngs and narrow streets. The narrow streets were amazıng! Cobblestones, parkıng on both sıdes of the street wıth barely room to drıve through and then add the pedestrıans to the mıx. I took lots of pıctures but cannot share them yet... soon I hope.... read more

This morning I went to Shabbat morning services with Avi. We went to the Ahavas Israel Synagogue, an orthodox shul. Avi made the 9th for the minyan, plus 5 women... We got there just as they were beginning to read from the Torah. The synagogue was built in 1904... Anchorage became a city in 1915. The inside was beautiful! I sat up with two other women in the upstairs though I could have sat downstairs also. From the upstairs I had a great view of the marvelous stained glass windows and the myriads of Stars of David painted on the walls. The seats felt old and looked old. The other people I met were very nice and welcoming... they did ask about our politics in Alaska, I get asked that a lot. I did not stay ... read more

Avi made us a wonderful dinner tonight! He is quite the host...We'd planned on going to a movie but instead watched a movie being made when we went out for a walk after dinner... We'd noticed the last day or two that many streets had orange no parking cones out. Avi said it was for a movie that was being filmed in the area. There are a few movie lots/studios and lighting places. Tomorrow we'll go see a set for Atlantic City that has been left up. We were going to walk around the park but decided to head towards the lights and to where all the people were standing. So many people waiting and watching the filming which took all of a few minutes but the setting up took a long time. One of the ... read more

Woke up to another beautiful day! Sunny, not too hot, not humid at all. Helped Avi with his work on the Yad for an ad he's putting together. (myyad.com) Shined up the beads to make them even prettier. Then David picked me up for lunch and we went to the Lower Eastside to Noah's Ark deli for hot pastrami sandwiches again... Laughed and talked the whole time getting to know each other. How much fun to meet a new cousin! We've known about each other all our lives but never crossed paths. After lunch David dropped me off back in Brooklyn where I wandered around for awhile till coming back to Avi's. More rest and relaxation...... read more

I arrived safe and sound after a long flight and layover in Seattle. Slept a little on the plane so was not totally exhausted when my cousin David met me. We went to eat dinner with his family and had a wonderful time, got my hot pastrami sandwich too! It is so fun to meet new cousins. Hopefully one day they'll come visit us in Alaska. (David took some pictures so as soon as he emails them to me I'll post them.) After dinner David dropped me off at Avi's home. Avi went into Manhattan the next morning and I thought I might get up and join him but slept in instead. Then sat outside in his beautiful garden reading and enjoying the beautiful weather. I'm typing this up now sitting inside, it is not so ... read more
