Every morning Matt steps out on the verandah, coffee in hand, adopts his "man of the sea" stance and surveys the water and the wind. Winds out of the north bring big waves that stir up the black sandy sea bottom and decrease visibility to almost nil. He takes his time, weighing the clouds direction and speed, the sound and look of the waves, and then announces the activity of the day. On days when the winds and waves are high we are guaranteed no visibility so these are days spent either swimming or out of the water entirely. The other day we swam a little over an hour and found it much more pleasant than in Sri Lanka. The sun seems less harsh here, probably because of all the humidity in the air. The water ... read more

It's monsoon season in Bali which means every few days it rains. The downpours are short - sometimes just 5 or 10 minutes - and hard. Yesterday Matt and I went for a walk on the beach and got caught up in what they so casually call a shower here. I think it would more accurately be described as death by a thousand raindrops. The rain doesn't affect the diving but the wind does. The wind brings waves which churn up the bottom making clouds of sand impossible to see through. Luckily there is a freediving shop that has moorings and rents out buoys and lines so on low visibility days we can just follow the line down and back up, adapting our bodies to depth again, stretching, relaxing. We've talked about making some trips to ... read more

I sang as I scrubbed the dishes today, the fact that I can cook or do laundry whenever I want has made me happier than it should any sane person. I have great admiration for backpackers that can live out of one small bag, moving from hostel to hostel and eating only street food, but I am not that person and neither is Matt. We may have been when we were younger but the benefit of traveling when you are -ahem- a little older is that you know yourself better and you stop wanting to be something you're not. After six weeks rinsing out underwear in hostel sinks, we knew it was time to call it. The little house we've rented in Amed - around 50 - 60 sq meters - is more than ... read more

I'm sitting on the verandah of our little rented house watching the clouds roll in over the sea and listening to the story of this beach. The high tide line is littered with volcanic rocks and each time a wave runs over them they tumble and chatter, and grind themselves down into a rich black sand. Our goal for this trip was to find a tiny house where we could live quietly and freedive every day. We'd hoped for a place without too many tourists, especially the kind that like to party, and somewhere we'd love the food and could meet and get to know the local people. The perfect spot, though we hadn't dared to wish for it, would be a sleepy town, with easy access to deep water close to shore. The last couple ... read more

Our last few days in Sri Lanka went by very quickly. Once we decided to move on we were anxious to get going but Kantha made us promise to stay for his birthday party, on the 8th of January. The party was a perfect excuse to wear the saree his wife Kanthi had gifted me the week before. The day after she gave it to me, I asked Vajira to help me find a fabric store and then a women's tailor to have the blouse and underskirt made. He did and also gave me suggestions for the style of blouse I should choose. Afterward we went to the men's tailor to have Matt's sarong sewed up. Dressing in a saree sounds very simple - all you have to do is tuck a long piece of fabric ... read more

The first few weeks of our trip we were so focused on finding depth for freediving that we ignored the many swimming possibilities in Weligama Bay. After our tour of the rest of the country we are back in beach territory and have made it a priority to check out all the rocks and islets. Matt and I are quite comfortable in tidal current and cold water, but conditions are very different here. The Bay is shallow and there is a lot of surf that sometimes breaks way out, and strong surge. All of this creates different currents that I have no experience in, so it's been fun learning how to swim in a different environment. Matt has been very patient teaching me how to enter and exit through waves (the South is known as a ... read more

Matt and I ran some errands in Weligama yesterday. We needed to buy and mail a birthday card, pick up some electrician's tape, and find a couple of gifts and wrapping paper. Easy, right? Well, surprisingly, it was. On our way out of the last shop, bags in hand, gifts pre-wrapped per our request, we laughed as we recalled a similar outing, undertaken our first week in Sri Lanka. The list that day was short: tape, thread and needle, and postcards. We asked many people for help but the directions were difficult for us to understand and if we were able to find the right place, it was closed or didn't have what we needed. After 2 hours of wandering around we left completely defeated. I guess we have adapted. Yesterday, with our list completed after ... read more

After Yala we visited Bundala, a national park comprised of wetlands bordered by another protected beach. A perfect spot for some bird watching. I wanted to see a Eurasian Hoopoe, a beautiful red bird with a black and white striped tail and a black crest and I did! Matt was most excited by the eagles. But after two days bouncing around in a safari jeep we were ready for some beach time. Tangalle was one of the beach villages we saw on our way to Yala. From the road it looked spectacular and it's been written up as a great place to hang out with 8km of golden sand beach to walk. It was really hot when we arrived so we checked into our guesthouse and headed right to the water for a swim. It is ... read more

If you are married to a biologist and want to make him as giddy as a 10 year old schoolgirl, take him on a safari. Yala National Park is a must see for anyone that comes to Sri Lanka. It is 978 km squared and mostly closed to the public. Access is granted to only 40% of the park and they are strict about not letting the Range Rovers stray off the roads. So if any animal wants to escape scrutiny, he just needs to turn around and walk into the bush. We were told not to expect too much since there is a lot of a park and only so many animals that roam it. So we were surprised and awed by what we did see. I'll let the photos do the talking. It's New Year's Eve and we are in the opposite direction from all of the parties! After our hiking trip and quick stop in Colombo, we returned to Weligama for a few days to unpack our backpacks, wash all our clothes, and pack up again. Our friends tried to convince us to stay on the coast until tomorrow so we could attend one of the many beach parties planned for tonight, but neither Matt nor I were interested in ringing in the new year at a noisy party. The railway tracks only go as far south as Matara, so we hired a van and driver to take us NE toward Tissamaharama which is the closest town to Yala National Park. Driving the coastal highway we passed a lot of little beach towns that looked irresistable and ... read more
