This month (or so) I have been really getting to know the area well. Going up into the hills to visit some of the tribal villages, taking part in two more fiestas, eating lots and getting fat. I also moved house and got a surf board. Putting this blog on the web has been delayed by a holiday with Viv but that can be the subject of the next entry in a week of two. First a random thing about eggs - why do I still buy 6 eggs at a time? Is there some unique rightness about buying eggs 6 at a time? Here eggs are sold by the piece and placed loose in a bag to take home. I have been asking around and volunteers still tend to buy 6 at a time - ... read more

Hello, This month there is something for everyone with a big dance contest, some nice holiday type pictures, a bit about work and a collapsing bridge. Once a year the province holds a “provincial day” called Kaliga this is mainly aimed at showcasing local businesses, products, tourist attractions etc with each municipality in the province having a stall to display and sell their wares. I got some very nice honey in an old rum bottle and also some carabaw (water buffalo) cheese. The cheese was similar to a very fresh young goats cheese. A bit bland but a real treat to a cheese starved me. To make it more of an event there are games and performances with by far the biggest draw being a dance contest between municipalities. Lanuza won last year so there was ... read more

Hello everyone who reads this. If you got a surprise email telling you that this had been updated that is because I found out how to subscribe you en-mass from my outlook contacts list. I have now been in the Philippines for 2 months, that’s a month longer than I have ever spent in a foreign country (unless you count Scotland!). This blog entry is not on one subject just a hotch potch of things I have been doing and some odd thoughts. Being based in one place I have not actually seen much of the Philippines yet. However it is very rewarding to start to really understand the local culture and the way people live. Also makes me realise how little of that you see as a normal tourist. Hey Joe! As a white man ... read more

One of the reasons for coming over here was to get some new experiences in the world of work. There will be some big new experiences! The basic situation is: The Local Government Unit (LGU) (similar to a county council) has responsibility for livelihoods, health, education, land use etc. Most of the normal government responsibilities with a few additions such as water supply. While the responsibilities have been devolved to a local level resources have not. The problems are not just financial - in the Municipality of Lanuza LGU where I am based the land use is 80% forest but they have had no forester or forestry graduate on the staff and have had difficulty in recruiting these skills. To further erode the local control the central government is responsible for operating and approving Timber Licensing ... read more

The story so far….. After a uneventful trip I arrived in Manila - unless you have been to a big busy Asian city before its quite a shock. Most of all the contrast with some places rich and luxurious just next to shanty’s with the poorest people you can imagine - one living on the others rubbish. It’s a busy city where traffic rules are regarded as nothing more than optional. I didn’t stay there long! From Manila I flew to Cebu then on to Tandag (have a look on the map at the bottom of the page its about where the t of Butuan is). The country is stunning from the plane window particularly the coral reefs and small islands. Inland there are large mountains shrouded in cloud. Tandag itself is a small town by ... read more

Kamusta! This is my blog. If I manage to avoid the tropical diseases, poisonous creatures, etc, etc I will use it to keep you all abreast of my escapades in the Philippines. I can also put my most artistic photos here without blocking up your inboxes. I will be working with the municipality of Lanuza Agriculture Department as a Forest Management Specialist (when I know what that really means I will put it here on the blog). The area that I will cover is over 40,000 hectares of rainforest from sea level to twice the height of Ben Nevis. You may be forgiven for thinking that I was just off for 2 years of sunbathing, sipping coconut milk and learning to surf. But I am sure that the work will keep me out of most mischief ... read more
