I have been getting back to work as normal after doing the tour guide bit while my parents were here. If anyone is thinking of visiting this part of the world I recommend Palawan, the snorkelling at El Nido is like getting inside a giant aquarium. Being in the water with turtles, sharks and stingrays is all very cool. On the work side we have been planning a schedule of activities for the coming year mainly based on implementing the Forest Land Use Plan that I was working on for my first year here. This means we will be doing a programme of education activities as well as assisting local groups with mapping and paperwork to gain legal rights to land access. The most important activity will be to finalise a co-management between the local government ... read more

magine this - it is 4am on our first night in Lanuza and there is a commotion, the dogs (all three of them - white dog, black dog and brown pregnant again dog) are barking and there are raised voices as the guards are woken. In the morning we discovered that our neighbour had a cockroach crawl into her ear and had gone off to the local hospital, apparently quite a common occurrence. The cockroach was drowned with oil and then removal attempted but they had no aurascope and only removed the body so the next day she had to travel to Surigao to see the ENT specialist with equipment. A four hour trip on unmade roads, to have the head of the cockroach removed. It took just minutes with an aurascope to remove the rest ... read more

Not a Matt blog this time - rather a blog from Matt’s parents who are visiting a South East Asia country for the first time to see where Matt is living and to take a holiday with him in some parts of the Philippines he has not yet seen. Bit of a travelogue really, so bear with us and hear about our trip, warts and all. Matt met us when we landed in Cebu and as usual a bit of local knowledge goes a long way - instead of taking an ‘expensive’ airport taxi from the rank at the exit, we walked out of Arrivals and found a regular metered taxi to get our ride to the hotel. My impression next morning looking out onto the dilapidation, undisciplined traffic, dust, noise, dogs, goats mixing it with ... read more

Hello all, I celebrated my one year abroad anniversary at the end of March. It feels like a long time and at the same time has gone very quickly. To mark the occasion I made a pig of myself by eating a whole bar of Green and Blacks Maya Gold (possibly the best chocolate in the world). In 14 months time I will be packing my bags and heading back home, that seems to be coming even faster than the first year went. For the grim food award this month I came across Young’s Squid Flakes and felt that I just had to try them, the company being named after me and all that. I can report that they are every bit as bad as as some of you might be imagining. Squid flakes are now ... read more

Hello everyone. The main feature this month is a study tour to Kuningan in West Java, Indonesia. It was arranged through an EU / VSO funded project for knowledge and skills sharing across South East Asia. The focus was on community involvement in forest management. We visited two field sites, at the first the timber company has entered into a sharing agreement with local people giving them access to more land for agroforestry. At the second site local people are involved in the management of a national park. Both are successful projects that have been in place for 6 or 7 years. A group of 12 of us went from the Philippines plus 5 from Cambodia. We were hosted by a combination of local government, timber company, and NGOs but most of all the people of ... read more

Ok I said last time that rain would be a big deal here for a while …… well we just had 27cm in one 24 hour shot! To put it in perspective Edinburgh gets about 63cm in a year. I will never complain about Scottish rain again. That was the wettest day but it kept going for a whole week making the place super wet. My room stayed dry ish only because the rain that did come in drained out again through the gaps between the floorboards. Luckily we had no flooding or landslides (not near where people live anyway) but the rivers turned a deep red brown like liquid dairy milk. Not so tasty though. The plume of sediment washing out into the bay made the surfing a little less attractive for a while. Lots ... read more

Happy New Year everyone - its 2007 already! I made a quick trip back to the UK for Christmas and New Year (which of course lots of you know). I fattened up on loads of good food. It was a pleasure to eat good wholemeal bread, real milk and cheese as well as the usual rich Christmas grub. Christmas was with the family in Bournemouth then up north for a good round of friend visiting. The unexpected event award goes to a torch lit procession through Edinburgh while I was staying with Alan and Sue. Someone in health and safety must have been having an inspired day when they decided to allow a couple of thousand people to walk through the middle of the city with big burning things! I am still not sure why we ... read more

Hello all, I have just experienced the one big party that is the annual Lanuza Surf Festival. For most of the year Lanuza is a small rural Philippines town, very quiet except for the incessant (and defiantly not timely) crowing of the fighting cocks. The exceptions are at Fiesta time and at the Surf Festival. This is the biggest week of the year with lots of visitors from foreign places (mostly Australia) and from other parts of the Philippines. As well as the surfing competitions there is karaoke, boxing, cock fighting, billiards, lots of drinking, gambling and the highlight - a Bikini contest. For food as well as any number of BBQ stalls there is a Jolibee catering truck. That’s similar to McDonalds but with lots more sugar. The surf contests include an International longboard comp ... read more

This is my first blog for a while. My sister Hannah is still living the beach bum lifestyle here in Lanuza but she will be returning to the real world in a few days. This is what’s been keeping us entertained for the past week or so… Did you know that rats eat soap? We didn’t until Monday night when Hannah discovered her bar of soap was covered in teeth marks. The conversation (through our paper thin walls) went something like…. ‘Matt, something has been eating my soap’ ‘NO! nothing eats soap’ ‘well come and have a look at this’ (I hop over the balcony - Hannah displays her soap) ‘yep, something has defiantly been eating your soap’. Hannah got up for a pee last night and heard me doing the same, she shouted through the ... read more

First things first - I am not Matt - for one blog only I , Hannah , sister of Matt will be stepping into his flip flops to bring you this months thrills and spills from Lanuza. Matt sends his apologies for his blogging absence, he has been very busy of late and has even been missing lots of good waves to try and keep the Philippines in trees. I arrived here in the Philippines with my friend Anna a month ago. We spent the best part of three weeks roaming the southern Philippines collecting marriage proposals and discovering what it is like to be famous, beautiful and yet have the nickname ‘long nose’. Our travels went something like the following…. Flew into southern Philippines (Davao City), went exploring , ‘Hey mam, where are you going’, ... read more
