On the tube to Tower Hill today to visit the Tower of London. I love London in the winter, we were able to walk straight into the Tower and join a Yeoman Warder who entertained us with stories of beheadings, murders and folk being hanged, drawn and quartered. What a boys paradise, the White Tower containing the Royal Armouries, and every building seeming to have some gruesome tale from its medieval past. We also had a great look at the Crown Jewels, with such small crowds, we could take our time to admire the Coronation Regalia, all displayed in glass boxes within a large vault. The size and number of the diamonds, precious stones and gold is quite amazing. Mid afternoon we headed across Tower Bridge to southbank and HMAS Belfast. The old battleship is now ... read more

Today we disembarked the tube at Temple and headed along Fleet Street towards St Paul's Cathedral, now the legal district in the 12th Century, the headquarters of the Knights Templar. On the way we stopped in at the Temple Church where nine effigies of the once powerful Templar Knights lay on the floor, the boys weren't so impressed, apparently these are the bad guys in Assassin's Creed. Their downfall ultimately eventuated and the church became the property of Henry VIII. Our next stop was St Paul's where we were given ipods to guide us through. We could not all help to be impressed by the brillance of the mosaics only cleaned a few years ago, and the amazing collection of souls buried in the crypt. Will was most impressed by the grand tomb belonging to Horatio ... read more

Day three we headed to Greenwich, travelling on the Underground we arrived right at Greenwich Park full of the most magnificent old buildings, containing institutions such as the Trinity Music School, Greenwich University , National Maritime Museum and the Royal Observatory. We spent most of the day at the Musuem and the Observatory before grabbing a bite at the Greenwich market and heading back to Westminister along the Thames. The Royal Observatory was most interesting with a fantastic musuem displaying the history of the Royal Astronomer John Flamsteed and his obsessive charting of the stars at Greenwich and the perils on the 'longitude problem' including a display of Harrison's first four sea clocks. And of course we straddled the meridian line! ... read more

What an amazing day, the cold front hit London just before lunch and the snow came with a vengeance. I have never seen snow like this before in the UK. We started the day heading to Leicester square, and headed for Trafalgar square. We went to the National Portrait Gallery and refreshed our knowledge of the chronology of the royal family, before the blizzard arrived. Trafalgar Square just looked fantastic, we finally retreated into the National Gallery with everyone else escaping the weather where Duncan ensured we didn't miss any rooms! The storm had seemed to pass as we finally emerged and we headed to Covent Garden. On of the last shopping days before Christmas ensured there was plenty of atmosphere and we had a pork sausage and pickle from a market stall. The area is ... read more

Hi All, Arrived in London yesterday just after 5.00am and caught the underground to Hammersmith. The rental is good, a small terrace in a row of identical terraces. The weather as expected is cold and there has been a very nice dusting of snow today, so London is looking exceptionally attractive with fresh white snow and lots of Christmas lights. Have been shopping on Oxford Street yesterday, Westminster Abbey and The Cabinet War rooms today. Also walked thru a snow covered St James Park to Buckingham Palace, watched the changing of the horse guard and had a couple of close encounters with the local squirrels. More snow coming over the next few days, so it will be interesting to see how the city copes.... read more
