Greetings! While I have a place with internet, I'll try to update my blog. (Of course we all know how well I kept up with Prague -- ha!) Day One of our trip to Vietnam: We left Portland at 9AM, bound for Seattle, Seoul, and eventually Saigon (aka Ho Chi Minh City). The trip to Seattle was short, and we thought that our layover would be way, way too long. We arrived before 10am and our next leg of the journey wasn't scheduled until after 1PM! It turned out to be a good thing that we had so much time on our hands because we had to check in with Asiana Airlines once we were in Seattle. This was the one downside to our trip over -- there were maybe 10 people in front of us ... read more

Today we planned for Terezin (Theresienstadt) concentration camp. Cheery subject, eh? Neither one of us has ever been to a concentration camp, so this would be interesting. Terezin is reached by bus, so immediately after breakfast we headed to the main bus station, Florenc, to figure out how to get to Terezin. It turns out, buying a bus ticket to Terezin is relatively easy (probably because so many tourists want to go each day - our bus ended up being packed and only a few were locals headed to different towns along the way), but riding the bus is a bit more expensive than riding the train (although slightly less expensive than driving would be if we had a car). The bus was nice, more like a tour bus than a stinky Greyhound. It was a ... read more

Death honored

We awoke early again this morning, perhaps due to the fact that we go to sleep so early because of exhaustion. It works out because I am able to write a bit in the mornings before we head down for breakfast. We also wanted to get an early start to the day because we had to figure our way around the metro and the train station today - we were headed to Kutna Hora. Breakfast was, again, lovely, and after we ate we stopped by the front desk and bought a public transport ticket that is good on busses, trams, and metros for three days (280 Kc, about $15). From there, we walked to the nearest metro station (down the street and around the corner). I decided not to wear my tights today (to see if ... read more

(Even after taking an Advil PM we were only able to sleep until about 5AM local time. Hopefully this does not put a damper on our plans for the day.) Our hotel offers a complimentary continental breakfast, which is not always usual for hotels in Europe. The breakfast is more than what I am used to and it was great - lots of breads, cheeses, meats, cereal, eggs (scrambled and hardboiled), yogurt, salad, green beans, sausage. In addition to coffee and tea, they also had orange juice and champagne. I wonder if it’s like that every day or if today was somehow special because it was Christmas. We shall see. But even the spread was not my favorite part about breakfast - I loved the setting. Breakfast is held in a small cellar, something gothic-looking with ... read more

We awoke around 8am on Sunday, December 23, in order to get ready to leave for Prague. It still had not fully hit me that we were leaving, that in a few short hours we would be on a flight that would take us to Germany and then on to Prague, a city I dreamed of visiting for years. We went through routines that have become habit (packing, tying up loose ends, playing with the dog), although the pets seemed to think that something strange was afoot and started to pout and sulk. Joanna was a lifesaver, helping with the pets. Knowing that she was the one to stay and take care of the house and dog assuaged my guilt over leaving just a bit (how do you tell a dog that you’ll be back after ... read more
